Stung and Employed By The Wasp

A Crazy Coincidence

I finally pulled back into my own parking spot, and only then was I able to truly breathe.

“Home sweet home.” I whispered sarcastically, getting out of my car and making my way to the motel office.

The obnoxious bell rung as the door flew open, but this was the one time it didn’t bother me. It actually felt good to be back here, back to normal life.

Away from…..whatever the hell I had been in.

“Hi, how can I help you tonight?” An old man roughly spoke.

It was Bernie, the same man who had run this business since way before I was even born. He proved himself to be a beyond amazing human when he helped me first move in, and cut me a very special rate to stay here as long as I promised and succeeded in graduating high school.

“My goodness, Zoey. Where on earth have you been?” He grumbled, shuffling past the low swinging door to get to me and give me a hug.

“It’s a long story. I’m back though now, and here to stay.” I assured him.

“Good. You had me worried when you just up and vanished. It’s like you were trying to give me a heart attack.” He scolded me.

“I’m really sorry. I am. My search for a job though just kind of took me in a weird direction.” I said.

“You didn’t get yourself into anything illegal, correct? No drugs or anything?” He asked.

“Of course not!” I exclaimed.

“Good, you’re a good girl, and you don’t need to get yourself into any trouble.” He said.

“Trust me, coming back here was a sure way to make sure I stayed in the clear.” I told him.

“I’m glad to hear that. As far as you looking for a job goes, just know you can stay here free of charge until you start bringing in a solid income, and are more on your feet.” He declared.

“No, I couldn’t accept that. You’ve been so kind to me already- I can’t take accept that offer.” I replied.

“You know how you can repay me?” He wondered.

“How?” I asked.

“Accept that offer. I wish I had someone to look out for me when I was your age and in a similar situation with being on my own. Take this as me trying to give you the help I wish I had been granted.” He stated, sincerity in his eyes.

“Alright.” I agreed, nodding my head.

“Thank you. Now go on and get some sleep for the night, I’m off to do the same.” He said.

“Will do. Thank you again so very much.” I thanked him.

“Of course. Now get moving, I’ll see you around.” He dismissed me, smiling as he handed me a new set of keys to my old room.

I all but ran back to my room, and embraced all of the odd and somewhat off-putting features of the room that I haven't exactly been too keen on before I left. Now it was something I could look at in a more positive light, at least I wasn’t back at that freakshow of a house.

Slipping under the covers, I told myself I was going to think of the past few days as just a bad dream, and I’d never have to deal with it again.

Simple as that.

I was convinced of that by the time I was fast asleep.

Next Day - 8 am

‘Knock-Knock-Knock’

“One second, I’m coming!” I called to the door, as I was pulled from my not so deep sleep.

“How can I help?” I asked, opening up the door to see who was there.

I was more than surprised to see Bernie at my door.

“I have some rather crazy news, dear. May I come in?” He wondered.

What the fuck?

“Um...yeah, sure.” I said, moving back so that he could enter my room.

“Please, sit down.” He softly told me.

Oh no, something was wrong. I could tell.

What could have happened overnight though? It’s only been about 12 hours since I last saw him in the office.

“What’s going on? Why do you look so worried, and what could bring you here so early?” I asked him.

He simply hung his head and whispered, “I sold the business.”

“What?” I exclaimed, my jaw dropping to the ground.

“I received an offer overnight for the business, one that I could simply not refuse, and I had to take it.” He sniffled.

“This is your family’s business though! You told me yourself it’s been in your family for almost a hundred years….there’s no way that offer could be large enough to make you give up such an important part of yourself.” I cried, so beyond perplexed at the situation.

“I know, Zoey, I know. However, the offer was indeed large enough. I would be a fool not to take it, even though it breaks my heart to see it go, and of course knowing your situation has me concerned as well.” He sighed.

“Tell me if I’m prying too far, but how much did they offer you?” I asked- needing to know what amount of money made this old man sell a part of himself.

He looked up at me with guilt in his eyes.

“3 million.” He stated.

No.

Nope.

No way was this reality.

This was some sick joke, or April Fools’ day, but it wasn’t reality. It couldn’t be.

Who the hell was stupid enough to want this business, let alone to throw 3 million dollars at it?

Bernie handed me two envelopes addressed to “Current Resident”.

Instantly I knew this was real, due to the official business envelope he handed me.

I quickly read over the note and it basically apologized that we would have to find a new place to live, but the premise was going to be knocked down and rebuilt into something new.

“This is crazy...absolutely nuts.” I whispered, sitting back down and shaking my head.

“I know, trust me, this is harder for me to believe than it is for you.” Bernie said.

“So...um, when do I have until?” I asked, already dreading the answer.

“Tomorrow at noon.” He stated.

“Fuck.” I sighed, putting my head in my hands.

Where was I going to go?

What was I going to do?

I was so screwed.

“I’m so sorry. I’ll leave you be, and not cause you any more trouble.” He sadly said, shutting the door behind him.

I ripped the second envelope open, this time out of anger.

It read ~

Ms. Blake,

I was rather disheartened to see you leave so soon, As you may have figured out, I am indeed a businessman, and this was simply a necessary purchase for my company. How crazy of a coincidence it is that you just so happened to be staying at the motel our company bought. It’s funny how some things work out. If you need a place to stay at, you’re of course always welcomed back at our place. Hopefully I’ll be seeing you rather soon.

Sincerely,
Christopher Cerulli

A rod of white hot anger burst inside of me, and I instantly when on a mad search for the business card Eva had given me. With shaking fingers I got out my phone and dialed the number.

“Hello, you’ve reached The Nest, this is Eva, how can I help you?” She cheered.

“Chris, please.” I stated.

“May I ask what this is regarding?” She asked me.

“Nope.” I grumbled.

I didn’t want to take my anger out on her, but right now everyone was bound to get a little dose of it.

“Alright, please hold.” She politely replied.

My foot impatiently tapped as I waited for what felt like an eternity to finally get an answer.

“Hello, this is Chris.” He answered.

“Hey, what the fuck is wrong with you?” I seethed.

“Ah, Zoey, I presume?” Chris laughed.

“I’m glad you think screwing somebody over this bad is funny. Listen, I don’t get what you want this me. I’ve already told you, I’m nothing fucking special. Ok, I barely graduated high school, I live in a damn motel that I could barely ever pay full rent at, and I just wanted an honest, normal job. What is wrong with you to fork over 3 million dollars just to screw an old man out of his business and to kick me to the street?” I screamed, letting him know how truly pissed off I was.

“Holy cow, someone’s a little angry.” He stated.

“You are a cocky son of a bitch.” I hissed.

“Listen, you yelling at me is going to have zero impact, just trust me on that one. If you want though, we can meet and have a civil conversation over dinner, ok?” He suggested.

“There’s nothing to talk about. I want you to leave me alone.” I snarled.

“Do you really, Zoey?” He questioned me.

“Fuck you.” I snipped.

“You were the one that called me, Ms. Blake, remember that. I do have a business to run, when you come to your senses, we will welcome you back with open arms.” He said calmly.

“I don’t get what you want from me.” I sighed, my anger lessening, and my frustration and sadness started coming to the surface.

“Come and meet me for dinner, and I’ll try and make some things right, ok?” Chris said.

“What do I have to do to get you to give the motel back?” I asked, just wanting to get something fixed and returned to normal.

“That’s not an option.” He stated.

I rolled my eyes and held back a scream.

“Zoey, there’s one option, and it’s a good one. Let me prove to you that you belong here with us.” He cooed.

“No….just no.” I said.

I heard him sigh from the other side of the phone.

“I’m sorry to hear you won’t be back on your own accord, that would have been the simpler choice.” He whispered.

The phone then clicked, letting me know he had hung up.

“What in the fuck?” I cried out, so frustrated by my confusion of the whole situation.

Also, what in the hell did he mean when he said I wouldn’t be coming back on my own accord? That low key sounded like a threat to me. They weren’t stupid enough to try and take me back there by force right? Why were they even trying when I obviously wasn’t a fan of it?

It was slowly starting to come to my attention that they hadn’t found me by chance.

They wouldn’t put up this big of a fight for just anyone else, but for some odd reason I was worth at least 3 million dollars and a big ass headache to them. For the short while I was with them I was able to tell that for some reason everyone of the guys seemed to only put up with me because that’s what Chris had asked for.

But what did he see in me that would cause that?

Once again I will state that I’m less than anywhere near special.

What in the world could have drawn him to me?

I simply didn’t have an answer to that, and quite frankly I had more important things to figure out at the moment.

I first had to figure out where I was going to go tomorrow, and then I’d try and figure out this whole Nest thing.

What a pain in my ass.

Notes

Is Zoey right, was it more than random selection that helped Heather find her of all people?

Will she be coming back to the Nest, and does she actually belong there?

What could make Chris think she's so special?

Thanks again for being patient with the incredibly slow updates on this book!!!
