Being Rose

Soap, Sniffing and Relationship Advice

I don’t know how long it had been. I had been sitting on the closed seat on the toilet with my head in my hands, trying to figure out a plan, but getting nowhere. But out of nowhere I heard a knock at the door. “Rose, it’s Jaime,” Oh no. “Are you okay?”
“Go away!” I called. He’s probably been waiting with a glass pressed against the door listening to me.
“What’s wrong?” he sounded concerned, but he was excited too. He’d just love me to have a breakdown and then come and cry all over his out of date tank top. “Are you sick?”
“No!” I called back through the door. He’s going to think I’m mental. I’ve been in here for a good thirty minutes. No sane person does that. He may have no shame, but I certainly do.
“Why don’t you come out?” he asked gently.
I looked around me for some excuse that wouldn’t make me sound like I was a complete basket case. “Because- Because . . .” I tried. “I’m doing something.”
“What?”
“I’m . . .” I frowned, “I’m smelling this soap.”
“You’re what?” he thinks he’s misheard me. I want to bash my head up against the wall.
“You startled me. The smell of this soap calms me.”
“Well,” he tried quiet softly. “You could always bring the soap with you.”
I wanted to cry. I picked up the soap like it was a small infant and unlocked the door. Jaime grinned at me and my bar of soap like the pair of us were the best thing he’s ever seen. We went back to the kitchen and sat at the table, my bar of soap sitting on the table next to me. Mike looked at me as though I had three heads when we all sat down but for some reason didn’t say anything.
Jaime was behaving in a very unusual manner by not showing what a creep he is. He seemed to be perfectly respectable and very un-stalkerish. This was probably why my Mom had arranged this very awkward and stressful excuse for a dinner. He must seem like a right catch. Jaime, who obviously likes her Rosie, talented, apparently funny, Mexican so he understands our heritage. She’s never see how insane he is.
“Rose, will you be at Kellin’s party?” Jaime asked while everyone was starting to eat.
“Oh I’m sure she will definitely grab her chance to see Kellin.” Mike said and I glared at him. This couldn’t be happening. “I know she wouldn’t miss it for the world. Give him a kiss goodbye before his vacation.”
“Kiss him goodbye?” Jaime asked and the entire table seemed to be watching me. I hated them all. I was glaring at each and every one of them.
“It was a joke,” I laughed. “None of you got it though because Mike isn’t funny.” I looked at Mom for help and she only raised her eyebrows. I looked at Dad and he shrugged. Why am I surrounded by children and adults who enjoy watching me squirm. I need to change the subject. “So, Mike,” I said and everyone turned to look at me again. “Has Alysha left you yet?”
“No,” he snapped. “She’s working today.”
“Hmm…” I muttered like I didn’t believe him.
“Puta.” He said under his breath, so only I could hear him.
“What did you call me? You nasty, little-“
“Rose! Language!” Mom warned. I should have said it in Spanish.
I decided to completely cut myself out of the conversation and keep to my dinner and my bar of soap. It definitely seemed like the better option. I wish Lottie was here, she would come to my rescue and save me. Or even Vic, he would tell Mike to shut up.
As it started to get dark outside I decided that it was an acceptable time to escape this horror. I put my jacket on and kissed my parents goodbye. I ignored Mike and then ran into the hall where I couldn’t believe my luck. I was free. I was almost out of the door when I saw the person I was trying to escape.
“What?” I asked Jaime.
“Your Mom said that I should walk you home.” He explained. Oh I bet she did.
“Are you sure?”
“Of course I’m sure,” he defended. “She doesn’t want you walking alone in the dark.” There was a bit of a pause where we both seemed to be waiting for the other to speak.
“Don’t you dare walk out of this house without Jaime keeping you safe!” Mom yelled. I sighed and admitted defeat. It’s like I had hordes of mass murderers after me.
“Come on then.” I sighed. Jaime followed me out and fell into step with me.
“Where to?” he asked.
“My home. You should know the way, you barely leave the place.”
“Right, of course.” He nodded to himself.
Then from then on we walked in silence. I don’t know why my Mom insisted on me being walked home. I knew the way. I walk around at night plenty of times. It’s not like I’m going to get kidnapped, and even if I did they’d soon bring me back.
We reached my building and we stopped outside. “Thanks for walking me home, I guess.” I said awkwardly.
“Any time.” Jaime said, burying his hands deep inside his pockets. “Look, Rose. Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.” I shrugged.
“What did Mike mean about you and Kellin? Is there something going on between the two of you?” he asked quite seriously.
“Of course not.” I wish there was something going on between the two of us.
“I just didn’t know you liked someone else.” He muttered, looking down. For some reason I felt absolutely terrible. I don’t know why. It’s not like Jaime and I are together and I’ve just cheated on him.
“Sorry, but nothing will happen.” I tried to cheer him up and make myself feel a little better.
“It won’t?”
“Katelynne is absolutely beautiful. I don’t even come close to her.” I laughed.
Jaime sighed and took a hold of my face moving it from side to side. This doesn’t seem normal. “You’re so much more beautiful than Katelynne. Plus, you’re beautiful inside too. I’m sure Kellin thinks so too.”
“Um thanks.” I smiled.
“That’s okay.”
It’s all slowly getting stranger. He’s still holding my face. How do I get him to let go? He’s leaning closer to me too. Oh no. Oh no! His lips touched mine and I was so shocked and panicked that I didn’t do anything. I just stood there. When he finally pulled away and let me go he smiled widely. I couldn’t move so I just looked at him. He waved to me and started walking away.
“What was that?!” Lottie demanded, coming outside. I looked at her in shock. She wrapped her arms around me in a comforting way. “Let’s go inside.”
I didn’t know what was worse – kissing Jaime or getting relationship advice from him.

Notes

Hey! What did you think? What do you want to see? How are you liking Rose?
