Sam's Town

dieciocho.

It was a Sunday evening in the Preciado-Matthews apartment. A lonely Sunday evening. Mia was sitting at my kitchen counter typing away at something on her computer while I cooked and sang along to No Doubt. I was making tortellini alfredo and a side salad.

"You got me feelin' hella good so let's just keep on dancing. You hold me like you should so I'm gonna keep on dancing," I sang along as I poured the cooked tortellini into the alfredo sauce, mixing it up and coating each noodle. I grabbed two bowls from the cabinets and put some alfredo in each, then grabbed two small plates and put salad on them. I placed them down on the island and grabbed the ranch dressing from inside the refrigerator.

"Thank you," Mia mumbled while taking a bite of her food and not breaking her eyes away from her computer screen.

"What's wrong with you, chica?" I asked while pulling up a stool and sitting across from her.

"I'm just creeping," she laughed. "Nothing's wrong. I haven't found anything yet."

"Would you stop?" I grabbed her computer and closed it. "Can you just trust Casey for two hours?"

"He hasn't talked to me in four," she stated. "Don't roll your eyes at me."

"You're being ridiculous," I laughed. "They've been gone for three weeks. They'll be back in five weeks. All you've done is sat on Twitter and FaceBook and stalked the living shit out of him."

"Like you haven't taken the time out of your day to look and see what Mike's up to," she snapped back.

"Don't fight with me," I grumbled. "Eat your food like a good little Mia."

"I hate you," she laughed and kept on eating. "Can we go to the bar? Maybe it will get my mind off things."

"We're turning into alcoholics, Mi," I laughed. "We've gone to the bar almost every night since the boys left."

"Ain't shit else to do," she shrugged.

And what do you know? An hour later we left for the bar, and we've been sitting at the bar together talking to Sadie for three hours straight.

"I really think I need to invest in a vibrator," Mia laughed as she sipped at her drink.

Sadie cackled from the other side of the bar, "You don't think you can go two months without Casey?"

"We have sex e-v-e-r-y day! I survived the last two weeks and I want to DIE!" She whined, "Rae go lesbian with me and we can do it together. I know you have one."

"Can you not?" I shook my head, completely embarrassed that she just said that. "And the last thing I want to do is go lesbian with you."

"Why? I have a beautiful vagina!" Mia scoffed, "I'm taking offense to that!"

"Good," I winked at her. "Sadie, can I just get a water?"

"Anything for my girl," Sadie smiled and handed me a glass of water. "So, how's the apartment by yourself?"

"Peaceful," I laughed. "I love having a place to myself. I've lived with Jaime since I was eighteen; I'd do anything to move out on my own."

"Having my own house was the best decision I ever made," Mia butt in.

"Yeah, but you also saved up money because you didn't go to college. You jumped straight into the work force and I just started working a year ago. I don't have enough money for my own home. I wouldn't mind getting my own apartment, though. I just could never leave Jaime," I shrugged.

Sadie frowned, "Have you talked to him about it?" I shook my head and she sighed, "I think you should. Maybe he could move in with Jess."

"Yeah, that's always an option!" Mia exclaimed, "And then you could just keep your apartment!"

"There's no way I could pay for that thing by myself," I shrugged. "I'd have to let him stay there and I'd find a one-bedroom apartment somewhere else. I don't even want to think about this right now. It's a pipe dream… moving out all by myself at 21… it's not going to happen." I shook my head and drank some of my water.

"Why are you drinking water?" Mia asked me with an eyebrow raised.

"Because I already put down four beers and I have work in the morning," I laughed.

"So do I!" Mia yelled while chugging the rest of her cranberry and vodka. "And I'll take another one, Say!"

I heard Sadie laugh. I shook my head, "I'll take one too!" Soon enough we both had new drinks sitting in front of us. "Let's have a fucking toast, Mi."

"To being the hottest, alcoholic bitches anyone could ever wish to have as their girls!" Mia yelled and we hit our glasses together before taking a drink out of them.

"Hey there," a voice sounded from beside me. I looked over to see Alec. I hadn't talked to him or seen him since we bumped into each other at the mall. He took a seat on the stool next to me. "You look pretty."

"Thanks," I smiled. "Alec, this is Mia…" I pointed to Mia. "Mia… this is Alec."

"Nice to meet you. A friend of Rae's is a friend of mine," Alec flashed her a smile and then looked back at me. "How's home without your man?"

"It's home. Kind of boring, but I'm able to focus on work more. Mike and I are constantly together, so it gives me a break from him. I think it's a good thing," I laughed while pulling the bottom of my shirt down.

"You miss him?" He asked with an eyebrow raised, "It seems like you don't."

"I really don't know if I miss him or not," I laughed. "Like I said, it's nice to get away from each other… hell… it's nice to get away from all the boys for a period of time."

Mia grabbed my shoulder and pulled my ear to her lips, "Is he the one you slept with?" I nodded. "Damn. He's fine," she laughed and pushed me away and started talking to Sadie again.

"Secrets don't make friends," Alec smiled at me.

"Hush," I laughed and chugged the rest of my drink. I felt the alcohol burn the back of my throat… I was going to be drunk any minute.

"Remember what I said when I saw you at the mall?" Alec said while grabbing my hand.

"Mhm," I mumbled, feeling myself become under the influence.

"That offer is still standing," he grinned.

"Oh yeah?" I smirked.

"Yes," he laced his fingers in mine.

"Don't get your hopes up," I laughed and pulled my hand back to myself.

Alec rolled his eyes, "Rae, I can just tell from looking at you that you are not the faithful type, so don't pull that shit with me."

"Your point?" I raised an eyebrow. "I don't have to be… I'm not in a committed relationship."

"Then what about my offer?"

I laughed, "Although I'm not in a relationship, I still respect Mike's feelings enough to not turn what we have to shit."

"Bullshit. I can read straight through you," Alec laughed and sipped his beer. "I bet I could tell you everything that goes on inside that pretty little head of yours."

"Humor me," I laughed, resting my elbow on the bar and putting my head in my hand.

He smirked, "You won't commit to anyone because you're a cheater. You're a cold-hearted bitch, Rae. You may have feelings for Mike, but you'll never be with him. You can't control yourself. Being with one person doesn't give you the attention you crave. Hence the reason you slept with me while Mike was away. You may have your friends fooled, having them think that you had a bad relationship in the past, but the truth is that you were the cause of it. Am I right?"

"I may have cheated on my boyfriend at one point, yes," I smiled drunkly. "Are you a psychic?"

"If you're thinking about the way my dick feels inside you, I may be a psychic."

I laughed, "You're very persistent, Alec."

"I've been told that," he grinned.

"Not. Happening."

"Right," he rolled his eyes. “Does your man know about me?”

“He does,” I nodded. “I also told him I’m his and only his. I’m sticking to that plan.”

“You really think he can give you what you need?”

“I don’t know,” I groaned. “I’m drunk, you’re questioning me... it’s hurting my brain and I have work in the morning.” I looked at my phone, it read 12:30 AM. “FUCK! I HAVE WORK IN THE MORNING!” I yelled, sobering up a little bit. I looked over and grabbed Mia’s hand, “We should probably head out. It’s twelve-thirty.”

“Are you serious?” She asked shocked. I nodded. “Fuck!”

We grabbed our purses and said our goodbyes.

“I know you still have my number, Rae. The offer is still standing.” Alec smiled as I exited the bar.
