A Match Into Water

Chapter Six

“But I don’t even have a gift for him!”

Mike rolled his eyes for about the 15th time as I yet again complained about not having a gift for Vic. “And like I’ve said before Dean, Vic’s not going to care,” he told me, being sure to add extra emphasis to that last part of the phrase.

“Are you sure-”

“Oh my God, yes!” Mike practically shouts, obviously getting frustrated with me. “Honestly, if you’re that concerned with it, just buy him a card or something later.”

I let out a sigh and shook my head. “You’re right, I’m sorry,” I quietly apologize. “It’s just, you know, I tend to over worry about things.”

“Really? I didn’t notice,” Mike teases, his mood instantly lifting as he glanced over at me and smiled a bit. I rolled my eyes a little at him and Mike turned down another street that led to a neighborhood of small suburban houses.

“Are we almost there?” I asked, looking out the window at all of the houses.

“Yeah, it’s at the end of street,” Mike answers, nodding his head in the direction of the house. The next thing I knew, Mike had pulled up to and stopped in front of this white, two-story house. The house itself was very simple and almost classic looking, yet the green trim gave the house a rather homey feel.

“So this is your parents house, right?” I ask as Mike pulled the keys out of the ignition.

“Well it sure isn’t Vic’s house,” Mike jokes, smirking a bit at me before getting out of the car.

“Yeah, no shit,” I say with a laugh, giving him a pointed look once I was out of the vehicle.

“Hey, don’t blame me,” Mike says with a shrug, “you’re the one that wanted to know-”

“I didn’t ask for the sarcasm though,” I point out, causing Mike to laugh a bit.

“Okay, you win,” Mike admits, shaking his head as he led me from the car to his parent’s house. I hesitated a few steps away from the front door though, and slowly stopped all together. MIke must have noticed because he suddenly stopped and turned around to face me. “What’s wrong?” he asked.

“What if they don’t want me here?” I asked Mike shyly, shuffling my feet awkwardly.

“Well why wouldn’t they?” Mike asks, smiling a little at me. “I mean, practically everyone inside that house knows you or has at least heard of you-”

“Yeah but your parents, I mean, what if they kick me out or something-”

Mike broke out into a loud fit of laughter and shook his head at me, grabbing my wrist and pulling me along with him. “You worry too much, Dean,” he says, still chuckling a bit at my hesitance.

“Yeah I think we’ve already established that,” I quietly grumble, my anxiety levels quickly rising as Mike rang the doorbell. I guess there was no going back at this point.

Several moments went by before the door finally opened and a small, middle aged lady that definitely resembled both Mike and Vic opened the door. She smiled a warm smile and said, “Michael, mi hijo, come in!”

Mike returned her warm smile and hugged his mother before the two of us were ushered inside. “Hey, Mama,” he said.

“We were wondering when you’d be showing up,” she told him with a bit of a bright, playful glint in her eyes, a glint that had become all too familiar to me. She finally looked over at me and her smile grew a bit more. “And who is this lovely lady that you’ve brought along with you?”

A bit of a blush formed on my cheeks and Mike answered, “Mama, this is Dean-”

Mrs. Fuentes started to laugh and she jokingly said, “Oh so you’re the girl my sons won’t stop blabbering about?” She let out another laugh and pulled me into a warm, comforting hug. “It’s great to finally meet you, dear.”

I returned the hug and pulled away to smile at her. “It’s great to meet you too, Mrs. Fuentes-”

“Oh please, call me Vivian,” she told me.

“Alright, Vivian,” I corrected with a nod. “Though I have to say, I haven’t heard that much about you or your husband-”

“Sounds like our boys,” Vivian said with a sigh. “You know, they never talk about us to their friends- I think we embarrass them or something-”

Mike let out this loud groan and whined, “Mama you know that’s not true-”

“Oh I know, mi hijo, I was just teasing,” Vivian says with a bit of a smirk. “Now go on, we can catch up later. Your brother and the others are all in the back along with your father. I’m just finishing up a few little things in the kitchen-”

“Do you need any help?” I offer Vivian.

“Oh no, I think I’ve got it,” Vivian told me with a bit of a laugh. “Besides, you should go out and enjoy yourself- it may be my son’s birthday but that doesn’t mean that his friends tend to enjoy themselves a bit too much as well, if you get what I mean,” Vivian jokes, winking a little at me.

Mike laughed at his mom and said, “You got that right, Mama. C’mon Dean, I’m just going to put Vic’s gift in the other room and get some drinks before heading out.”

I nodded at Mike and Vivian had already gone back to the kitchen to work (I could already hear various pots and pans banging about) so I followed him to the family room where a small assortment of gifts had already been placed there. I couldn’t help but look around for a quick moment before Mike dragged me towards the kitchen to the giant red cooler that no doubt held all the drinks we could ever need in there.

As we approached the cooler, a tall, skinny guy with medium-length dark brown hair, a green tank top, grey skinny jeans, and Toms was getting his own drink. His tattooed arm reached into the cooler and pulled out a beer as he looked over and saw us. He immediately smiled and closed the lid on the cooler. “Mike! How’s it going man?” he greeted, pulling Mike into a quick hug.

“Not bad, what about you, Kell?” Mike asked, smiling back as he went over and pulled out two drinks before tossing one to me.

“About the same, really,” ‘Kell’ answered with a bit of a shrug. He looked over at me and smiled. “And who is this cutie over here?”

Mike chuckled at his friend and was about to introduce me, but I stepped in myself. “I’m Dean,” I say, returning the friendly smile and holding out my hand to shake.

“Ah, so you’re the one Vic’s been worrying about inviting over,” he said with a joking smile, gladly shaking my hand.

“So has everyone already heard about me?” I asked with a light laugh.

“Pretty much,” both Mike and ‘Kell’ in unison. The two glanced over at each other for a moment before ‘Kell’ started talking again. “But don’t worry, it’s been nothing but good things.

“Well that’s a relief,” I say, jokingly wiping sweat off my forehead. Both boys chuckled at that and Mike stepped in yet again to the conversation.

“Dean, this is our good friend Kellin,” Mike introduced his friend. Kellin smiled brightly and waved a little at me, causing me to giggle a bit. Then a thought dawned on me and I couldn’t help but blurt out, “Wait, aren’t you from Sleeping With Sirens?”

Kellin smiled proudly and pretended to puff out his chest. “Why yes, yes I am,” he told me, giving me a playful wink. “Are you a fan?”

“Kind of, yeah,” I admit, briefly glancing over at Mike who both looked quite shocked yet rather amused. “A few years ago your band played in my hometown and my friend dragged me along to the concert. It was really great and I’ve honestly never forgotten it-”

“Yet you couldn’t remember our band’s name after your friend repeatedly played our music at work,” Mike joked, giving me a playful glare.

“Oh shut up Mike,” I say with a light laugh. All three of us were laughing and it took us a moment before we all calmed down.

“No, but seriously, that’s pretty cool that you’ve remembered us,” Kellin told me. “We’ve always made music with the idea that we’re making some sort of difference with our audience, so that actually means a lot to hear that from you.”

“You’re welcome then, I guess,” I say with a bit of a shrug, smiling a little at Kellin.

He smiled back before saying, “Now come on! I know for a fact Vic didn’t know you’d be showing up, so let’s go tell him you’re here.”

“Okay,” I say with a bit of a laugh as Kellin led myself and a chuckling Mike out to the backyard. When we got out there, Mr. Fuentes was cooking an assortment of delicious smelling meats on the barbeque and Vic had his back turned to us as he was talking to both Jaime and Tony.

Kellin, a few steps in front of me, wasted no time in yelling out, “Hey yo, Vic! You didn’t tell me that you’d invited a bunch of pretty girls to this party!”

Vic started laughing and as he was turning around yelled back, “Shut up dude! Aren’t you like married or something?”

“Doesn’t mean that I can appreciate someone’s beauty,” Kellin joked, winking at him at the exact moment I stepped out into the backyard. Vic’s eyes immediately met mine and they widened with both surprise and happiness.

“Dean?” Vic asked, coming closer with both Tony and Jaime trailing behind him.

“Hey Vic, hope you don’t mind me crashing your party,” I joke, smiling at him as I went to meet him.

Vic let out a loud laugh and said, “Darling, I don’t mind one bit.” He immediately pulled me in for a hug as soon as he was close enough and I couldn’t help but return the hug. When we both finally let go of each other’s embrace, Vic looked at me a bit curiously. “How’d you even-”

“Get here to the party?” I finish for him. “Let’s just say your brother came knocking in the early hours of the morning and forced me to leave the house,” I joke.

Vic chuckled at my response and shook his head at me. “Well remind me to thank him later then-”

“YOU’RE WELCOME, BRO!” Mike shouts from across the yard, waving from where he was with his dad.

Both Vic and I started laughing and Vic gave him a giant thumbs up as a response. Jaime took the opportunity to swoop in and wrap me up in one his giant bear hugs that I had grown accustomed to over the past few weeks. “We didn’t think you’d be coming, Girlie!” Jaime cheered, finally letting go of me.

“To be honest, I didn’t even know I was coming until earlier today,” I admit, smiling at Jaime. Just then, I was tackled in the side with another tight hug and I heard someone yell, “Leia!”

I started laughing as soon as I heard Tony practically scream my nickname in my ear. Awhile back when we were all hanging out, Tony had a bit too much to drink and decided that everyone needed nicknames. Needless to say, he immediately said I should be Princess Leia, but after much debate, he finally settled on ‘Leia’. None of the other boys remembered their nicknames that Tony had given him, but for some reason ‘Leia’ had just stuck and Tony’s been calling me that ever since. “Hey Turtle.” I finally say, using one of the two nicknames I had gotten used to calling him.

“Leia?” I hear Kellin ask. “But I thought her name was-”

“Oh yeah, it’s still Dean,” Jaime explains, “but those two are both giant nerds, so when dear Tony over here got drunk, he nicknamed her Princess Leia and it just kinda stuck.”

Kellin nodded to say he understood while I groaned and whined, “Dude, we’ve been over this- it’s not nice to call people nerds-”

“But you and Tony totally are!” Jaime says with a giant grin.

“Shut up Jamie,” I say, smirking a bit at Jaime’s discomfort.

“Aw, c’mon Dean, you know that’s not my name-”

“It is as long as you call Tony and I nerds,” I threaten, my smirk widening.

Jaime grimaced and then held out his hand. “Truce?” he asked.

I looked at his hand for a moment before smiling sweetly at him and shaking his hand. “Truce.” I say. Vic decided to rejoin the conversation at that moment and joked, “Don’t you think that calling him that was a little uncalled for?”

“Not in the slightest-”

“BULLY!” Jaime shouted, pointing at me and acting like he was an overgrown 5 year old.

“Am not!” I shout back in protest.

“Are too!” he retorted.

“Nuh-uh!”

“Yeah-huh!”

“I swear to God, Jamie, I’m going to murder you-” Jaime let out a rather girlish scream at my threat and I soon began to chase him around the backyard. The other four, Vic, Kellin, Mike, and Tony, just stood there watching and laughing at the two of us. I even overheard a few of them making bets and wondering if they should help out Jaime.

“Food’s ready!” Vivian’s voice rang out in the yard.

“Food?” Jaime asked, stopping in his tracks and causing me to run straight into him. We both went tumbling to the ground and I landed flat on my butt with an audible ‘oof’. Jaime and I took one look at each other before we both busted up laughing.

“We good?” Jaime asked, looking over at me with an innocent smile.

I chuckled a bit and smiled in return. “Yeah, we’re good,” I reassured.

“Well now that you two have made up,” Vic says, walking up to where Jaime and I were still sprawled out across the grass, “how about we all go get some food?”

I looked up at Vic and smirked a little. “Shouldn’t you be inside eating, Birthday Boy?” I tease.

Vic smirked back in response and mocked, “Shouldn’t you be getting off the ground by now, Neighbor Girl?”

“Touche,” I say with a chuckle. Vic chuckles as well and holds out his hand to help me up. I gladly accept his hand and as he pulls me up, Jaime starts complaining.

“What about me?” he whines, pathetically pouting at Vic.

“Dude, you’re a grown man,” Vic says with a laugh. “You’re on your own for this one.”

Jaime frowned at Vic and I couldn’t help but laugh at his face. With a few grumbles and no doubt profanities being mumbled under his breath, Jaime finally got himself off the ground and dusted himself off. “You both suck,” he grumbles.

“We love you too, Jaime,” I say innocently, going over and giving him a hug that he quickly returned. “Now let’s go eat guys!”

The two cheered in response and we all ran in like little children, pushing and shoving to get to the kitchen before the other. Vivian saw what were doing and started laughing at the three of us. “Behave you three, there’s plenty of food for everyone,” Vivian.

“But Mama,” both Vic and Jaime whine.

“No buts,” Vivian scolded. “Now start acting your age and behave! Also, if you don’t get in there now, both Kellin and Mike are going to eat all of the food before-”

“Thanks Mama!” the two boys said in unison, quickly rushing past Vivian and into the kitchen. It wasn’t long before you could hear many shouts and complaints from the 5 boys in the kitchen. Both Vivian and I started to laugh and I joked, “What animals.”

“Tell me about it,” Vivian said. “Those boys- minus Kellin of course -used to come over almost nightly and I’d have to deal with almost twice as much as that.”

“Are you serious?” I say with a bit of a laugh.

“Yeah, they used to be worse believe it or not,” she told me, giving me a warm smile. “But they’ve all mellowed out and it seems like you can handle being around those four-”

“Just barely,” I joke. “But you know, it does help that I’m Vic’s neighbor- I just get even more exposure to the weirdness.”

“That you do,” Vivian said with a chuckle. Then she gave me another smile and said, “C’mon, mi hija, let’s see if the boys left us any food.”

“They better have!” I say, smiling back and rushing off to the kitchen with a chuckling Vivian on my heels. When I did enter the kitchen, most of the boys had food on their plates but Vic and Kellin were bickering like the little children they were over the last taco in the tray. Because of this, they were basically blocking off most of the other, so while both of them were fighting over who should get the taco, I grabbed myself a plate and when they weren’t looking I reached in and snatched the taco. Both sets of eyes darted towards me and their jaws dropped when they saw their taco on my plate. “What?” I ask innocently, shrugging and moving them aside so I could get a bit more food.

“But...but that was the last taco!” Kellin complained.

“So?” I asked. “You two couldn’t decide who got it and happened to be blocking the food, so I decided for you and got my food in the process.”

“But those are one of Mama’s specialties!” Vic exclaimed. Then he pouted a little and added, “And it’s-”

“Nope, you’re not using that as an excuse Vic,” I quickly cut in. “That won’t work on me.”

Vic pouted a bit more and I could tell he was about to add to his list of complaints, but Mr. Fuentes came in at that moment with a large tray of tacos and said, “Stop pouting Vic, there’s more.”

Vic’s face brightened along with Kellin’s and he said, “Thanks Papa!”

I couldn’t help but chuckle at both Kellin and Vic as they grabbed several tacos of their own and a bit more food before heading back outside with the rest of the guys. I grabbed my own food and went outside to join them as well, both Fuentes parents coming out behind me. We had all sat down on this large picnic bench in the backyard and it seemed like Jaime was in the middle of telling a joke, which everyone laughed at once it had ended. It went on like this for a couple of hours, everyone just sitting around eating, joking around, and overall just enjoying each other’s company. Eventually though, I really had to use the bathroom so Vic offered to take me inside and show me where it was.

“You really didn’t have to leave everyone out there to show me where the bathroom is Vic,” I tell him as we entered the house.

Vic just shrugged and said, “Eh, it’s no big deal. Besides, they won’t miss me for that long.”

I chuckled a little and shook my head, following him as he lead me through the house to get to the bathroom. As we passed through the family room, I noticed something there that I hadn’t quite noticed earlier when I was in here with Mike: a piano.

Seeing that piano kind of made me a bit nostalgic and a crap load of memories came rushing back to me. I pushed them all aside though and just focused on not letting my bladder explode.

I quickly thanked Vic once we got to the bathroom and rushed to the toilet. I honestly hadn’t realised that I had to pee that bad, but I guess when you’re having fun with people, you sort of forget the bear-necessities in life like peeing.

I finished up rather quickly and made sure that I washed my hands before leaving the bathroom. As I was lathering my hands with soap, I happened to catch a glimpse of my reflection in the mirror. At first, I was a little startled to see a pair of green eyes and a splash of white hair in front of me, but then I realised that I was just looking at myself...except, at the same time, it wasn’t me. This was why I rarely looked in mirrors anymore, I couldn’t stand to look at myself. I may have changed my appearance, but things had still stayed the same. The stupid, almost invisible freckles that were haphazardly splashed across my face were still there, my dark eyebrows were still there, my stupid semi-crooked nose that never quite healed from that skateboard accident when I was twelve was still there, my thin pale lips were still there- everything was still there. And I was sick of it. I was sick of seeing my own stupid, ugly face day in and day out.

You don’t always have to see that stupid-ass face of yours, a voice in my head whispered.

You don’t even have to look at yourself at all anymore, another said.

Hell- you don’t even have to see anymore.

All it takes is one small push-

One second of pain-

And then it’s all over-

“Shut up,” I quietly mumbled, closing my eyes and looking down at the sink. I was over those voices...I had been for months. I can just ignore them again, just like I do everyday…

Finally, I took in a deep breath and finished washing up my hands. I shouldn’t be thinking like this, not today at least. Today was Vic’s birthday, I should be happy. I should be happy for him and not be a killjoy. I shook my head of all those nasty thoughts and took one last glance in the mirror. My lips twitched up in a small smile and it looked believably enough, I guess, so I decided to finally leave the bathroom just in case people started getting suspicious as to why I was in here for so long.

When I left the bathroom, Vic wasn’t anywhere to be seen, so I assumed he went to join everyone in the back. I was on my way to do the same, but on the way back, I couldn’t help but stop in front of the piano and just stare at it again. The memories started coming back, but I didn’t even care. I just let them do their thing as I lightly ran my fingers over the keys. Oh how I wanted to play those beautiful ivory keys again…

“You play?” I jump at hearing Vic’s voice, and when I look to my right, he’s suddenly at my side.

“I’m sorry what?” I ask.

“Do play the piano?” Vic clarifies, smiling a bit at me. “I saw you eyeing it earlier and then when I saw you brushing over the keys, I just kind of figured you did.”

I smiled a little at Vic and shrugged. “Yeah, but it’s been awhile since I have,” I admit, looking back down at the keys. “I used to play all the time, though…”

“Why don’t you sit down and play something then?” he suggests, shrugging a bit and leaning against the wall that harbored the piano.

I let out a bit of a laugh and shook my head at him, turning away from the piano and rubbing my right arm absentmindedly. “No, I mean, I wasn’t even that good,” I tell him, glancing over at Vic momentarily. “If I wasn’t good then I’m sure as hell not good now.”

Vic let out a soft chuckle and smiled at me. “C’mon Dean, I’m sure it’s not that bad,” he tells me.

“Oh trust me,” I say, “it’s pretty bad-”

“Why not let me bed the judge of that?” Vic says, waggling his eyebrows. It sounded like he was joking around, but his tone and eyes were also very serious. He really wanted to hear me play…

I let out a bit of a sigh and started to protest. “Vic-”

“Please?” Vic pleaded, using his best puppy dog eyes. “For me?”

I looked over at him and bit my lower lip, almost agreeing but then shaking my head. “I- I don’t think it’s a good idea-”

“It is my birthday,” Vic added, shrugging innocently as he let his sentence trail off.

That excuse may not have worked when the tacos were involved, but right now, it was enough for me to cave in. I sighed and playfully rolled my eyes at him. “Fine,” I say, walking over to the piano and sitting down. “But just this once, alright?” I add, pretending to threaten him by pointing.

“Alright,” he said, unable to keep from smiling at me. I smiled back at him and as I prepared to play, I pressed one key on the piano before playing this really crappy rendition of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’. Vic started to laugh at me and soon enough, I was laughing along with him, finally looking over at him and smiling a bit.

“Anything specific you want to hear?” I asked after we had gotten over our fit of giggles.

“Play whatever your heart desires, Darling,” Vic told me, playfully winking at me. I giggled a bit at him and shook my head. I let out a bit of a shaky breath as I thought over what song to play before something popped into my mind. I scanned the keys briefly to make sure I knew where my notes were before I let out a small cough and played the opening chord.

“It’s not quite a mystery,” I sang, my voice soft yet strong as I played the notes the song required. “I’m the one’s who’s insecure, you're the one that makes believe that we're all okay, we're doing fine, when we're both fighting just to stay, to stay alive, a fragile state of mind, that I can't quite survive.

“Without a doubt, I need your help. I know you've heard me ask before, but come on girl, I need to tell you now, I know what I've done wrong.” I took a slight pause from the song and let out another shaky breath. I couldn’t even bear to look at Vic or anything else but the piano keys and it was starting to freak me out, so I just closed my eyes and let the music take over.

“The only way out of here is the way I've avoided for all my life. There's so many things I wanna say, but there's too many things still in the way. I'm lost, please help me find my place. You're the only one, please lead me out of the dark.” My fingers were flying across the keys and hitting every key they needed. I added a few ‘woahs’ where needed before continuing. “Please lead me out of the dark. Please lead me out of the dark.

“I'm moving on, I'll promise change, if you will let me in again, I swear today, I'll be a better man. I'll be who I was then.” My voice cracked a bit from all the emotions I was feeling from the song and it was at that point that I forgot where I was. I was no longer at the Fuentes Residence sitting down and playing the piano their son asked me to play. I was back in my small town in Texas, sitting down and playing the piano that I was rarely able to play. All of these emotions came rushing in and I started to pour my heart and soul into this piece, my body shaking from the intensity of which I played.

“It’s been a long two years, I can’t change the past. I’ve shed so many tears, can’t believe I’ve lasted this long. I see now that I’m wrong!” My voice rang out and bounced off the walls. Even with my closed eyes, I could feel tears welling up in my eyes but I willed them away. I wasn’t going to break down, not now.

“The only way out of here is the way I've avoided for all my life. There's so many things I wanna say, but there's too many things still in the way. I'm lost, please help me find my place. You're the only one, please lead me out of the dark. Please lead me out of the dark,” I finish, half whispering the last line as my fingers finish the last few chords. I finally opened my eyes to look at the keys below me and that was when I heard the soft clapping. Jumping a bit in surprise, I turned to find not only Vic but also Mike, Jaime, Tony, Kellin, Vivian, and Papa Fuentes standing there smiling and applauding me.

“Honey, that was beautiful,” Vivian praised, giving me a kind, warm smile.

“Dean, that was like- I mean, I can’t even describe that,” Jaime said, both Kellin and Tony nodding in agreement with him. They were obviously impressed and speechless after my playing.

“Anybody got a Kleenex box?” Mike joked, earning a slap from his mother. But with his joking tone aside, it honestly looked like he was about to cry.

Then there was Vic. Vic didn’t say anything, he just stared at me with this look of wonder and awe. It looked there were so many things he wanted to say but couldn’t find the words too. He even tried to speak but the words wouldn’t leave his mouth. He was truly and utterly speechless.

All of the compliments and speechless acts were beginning to make me blush and to get the attention off of me, I stood from the bench and jokingly said, “I guess that’ll have to do for now as your birthday present, huh Vic?”

“It’ll do more than work for now” Vic smiled warmly at me and pulled me into a hug. “Thank you...it’s the most beautiful gift I could have ever received,” he whispered in my ear.

Those few words brought tears to my eyes and I shut my eyes to will the tears away. I gave Vic another tight squeeze and whispered back, “Happy Birthday, Vic.”

Notes

Hey guys! I know I've been gone for awhile and also that this is kind of a weird update, but I hope the fact that it's a little bit longer can make up for my absense. Also, I've recently decided that I want to make Kellin some-what of a main character in this story, so you can expect to see a lot more of him in the future. The next update should be up within a few days hopefully, so stay tuned for that!

Also, I feel like I need to give credit to the song used in this chapter because it's in no way mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTQrOUIZ2cE
