A Match Into Water

Chapter Five

The next few weeks turned out to be quite eventful for me, yet also rather boring. And let’s be honest, you as the reader don’t want to read about me applying for jobs and settling into my new apartment anyway.

Unless you’re one of those people that enjoys reading that type of stuff. In that case, sorry dude. Talk to me next time though and maybe I’ll tell you all about my fabulous adventures.

Anyways, as I was saying, a lot of things happened in between that movie night with the boys and what’s happening right now. About a day or so after the movie night, Gabe, the guy from the liquor store, came by to tell me that the job was no longer available. He did tell me though that if any positions opened up in the future that he would let me know. I thanked him and almost immediately was grateful for the job falling through, but at the same time, I felt disappointed. Did I want to work in a liquor store? No, but that was the only place I had gone to for a job, and now, I was all the way back at square one. In a bit of a last ditch effort, I ended up stopping by Mountain Mike's to see if they had any job openings, and after explaining everything to Rosie, she did some digging and was able to find me a job as a waitress. This resulted in several words of thanks from me and also a giant hug that I wrapped her in shortly after. As a bonus, my tattoos weren’t a problem as long as I kept them covered at work and my qualification levels weren't an issue either.

Once I was working there for a few days and started getting paid, I all but ran to the store and bought groceries (and even a coffee machine). I also tried to repay Vic for some of the food and other things he had bought me, because after explaining my problem to him he was more than willing to help me out. He told me not to worry about it though and that if I was really worried about it, I could just buy him lunch or something sometime. So, that's what I did- he just wasn’t aware of it until after I’d given him and the rest of the boys their checks for lunch.

To make a long story short, about two weeks into my time at Mountain Mike's, one of the other waiters I worked with called in sick and couldn't get anyone to cover my shift. Rosie volunteered me to cover the shift and I was more than willing to do it. Around the end of the lunch rush though, when I was finishing up clearing a table, Rosie helped a party of four and sat them down at one of my booths.

I’m pretty sure she put those four little shits there on purpose too.

At first, I wasn't completely aware of who was at the booth, but when I started to approach them and heard Jaime’s all-too-familiar hyena laugh, I knew who it was. None of them other than Vic knew I worked here, so I decided this would be the perfect opportunity to mess with them.

“Hey guys,” I say with a bright smile, “my name is Dean and I’ll be-” Jaime, Tony, and Mike saw me and began doing double takes. I then let out a dramatic gasp and covered my mouth with my hands. “Oh my God, are you...are you guys Pierce The Veil? Oh my God, I am such a huge fan-

“Yeah, yeah, sure you are,” Mike cuts in, smirking at me before beginning to laugh his head off. The others started laughing too and Jaime piped up, “Dude! Since when have you worked here?”

I shrugged a little and said, “I’ve been working here about two weeks. I needed a job and Rosie was more than willing to get me a job here, so yeah. Ta-dah,” I add, throwing my hands out in a jazz hands fashion. That earned a few chuckles from the guys and I couldn’t help but smile. “I’m surprised you guys didn’t know already,” I admit after the laughs had calmed down. “I mean, I figured Vic would have said something once I told him-”

“It wasn’t my place to tell, Darling,” Vic says, smirking a bit as he gave me a playful wink. That smirk was short lived because the boys decided to descend, and by boys, I meant Jaime.

“You fucker!” Jaime half shouts, unable to keep from laughing as he punched Vic in the shoulder. “You knew she worked here the entire time and you didn’t say anything? How could you?!”

“It wasn’t his place to tell, Darling,” Mike butt in, mimicking the exact tone Vic had used with me moments before. Vic frowned at his younger brother and ended up chucking his napkin at Mike. Mike barely had enough time to dodge the flying napkin of death before it whizzed past his ear and landed on the floor behind me. He looked back and forth from his brother to the napkin before letting out a small string profanities at Vic (Jaime and Tony joining in on the fun as well).

I started cracking up at the boys’ behavior but before it escalated further, I decided to intervene. “Okay guys, before you four cause a scene and get me fired, can I least get your drinks so it actually looks like I know what I’m doing?”

“Way to be a buzzkill, Dean,” Mike jokes, giving me a toothy grin as he leans back in the booth.

I rolled my eyes at him and pulled out my paper pad and pen. “Watch it Mike, or it won’t be napkins that are being thrown at you,” I threaten, smiling a little as I did so. “Now, what can I get you boys?”

The guys spouted off their orders to me, and after retrieving their drinks, I sort of made it a point to check up on them often and ‘accidentally’ get caught up in conversation. The guys didn’t seem to mind me doing so and no one else was in the restaurant, so Rosie didn’t seem to mind either.

Unfortunately for me, once I finally got the boys their food, we had a large mass of people flood the restaurant, so my visits to the table were less frequent and much shorter in time. This seemed to work out in my favor though, because once it was time to deliver the checks, it was then that I decided to unleash my master plan. I shuffled through the four books until I found Vic’s. Without even looking at the total amount, I replaced his receipt with a note that read ‘You said I could buy you lunch ;) D’ I walked back to the table with all of their checks in hand, telling them that they could pay when they were ready before I got called off to another table. I hadn’t even gotten 10 feet away from the table when I heard a loud, obnoxious shout from Mike along with loud fits of laughter from both Tony and Jaime. I couldn’t help but smirk a little and when I looked back at the table, Jaime, Tony, and Mike were laughing. But Vic was looking straight at me with a smile of his own and a bit of a raised eyebrow. I just shrugged, gave him a playful wink, and then attended to what my table needed.

Needless to say, after that little stunt, Jaime, Tony, and Mike never let Vic and I live it down. For the next week, they were constantly bringing it up and gave us so much crap for it that honestly, both Vic and I were getting tired of it. After I snapped at Mike about after a long day of work, the three of them quickly left it alone.

Work went back to normal after that and nothing quite as eventful happened in the days to follow (although we did have one customer have a mental breakdown and take off all his clothes in the middle of the restaurant...that was pretty entertaining). I continued to hang out with the guys as well and there wasn’t a day that went by that I didn’t talk with at least one of them. Most of the time, that one person was Vic, but that was because we were neighbors and had this thing of running into each other every time I came home from work. At one point, Jaime and Tony had even started to complain about not being able to talk to me more often and that Vic was the one getting all the attention, but once I told them I couldn’t afford a phone and that it was their fault for not stopping by to say hello, they quickly abandoned their complaints and went on with talking with me when the five of us got together. Speaking of the five of us getting together, we always were gathering at Vic’s place. Why didn't we go to anyone else's place? Heck, why didn't we use my apartment? It was about the same size as Vic's and mine was quite roomy. I already was settled into my apartment anyways and it had been about a month since I had first moved in. This place needed people over, and mainly, it needed a party. So why didn’t I ever invite the guys over here?

And that’s how we got to where we are now. I, the overthinker, was currently sitting on the couch at 9 in the morning with a cup of coffee in my hands. The idea had merely just popped into my head at random, and I could be the first to admit that it wasn't that bad of an idea. On the down side, I’d have to find a way to hook up my sound system and then maybe borrow Vic’s DVD player if we wanted to watch movies. All in all, having Jaime, Tony, Mike, and Vic over to hang out was a great idea. I mean honestly, I didn’t see how it was any different than going over to Vic’s-

I didn't get much time to ponder too much on that though, but because quite suddenly, there was knock on the door.

Mildly startled from my train of thought, I quickly rose from the couch and ran over to the door, being especially carefully to not spill the hot cup of coffee in my hands. Another quick knock came when I was almost to the doorway, so I called out, “Just a second!” When I twisted open the door knob, I saw someone I wasn’t exactly expecting to seeing this early in the morning.

“Mike?” I began to ask, but I was quickly shushed and then ushered into my apartment as Mike let himself in and closed the door behind him. I gave him a questioning look and asked, “You alright dude? You look like you’re-”

“Nah, I’m fine,” Mike reassured, “I just wanted to make sure Vic didn’t know I was around.”

My eyebrow immediately shot up at that. “And why is that?” I ask. “Or better yet, what did you do to piss him off?”

“Nothing yet,” Mike jokes, giving me a bit of a sly grin and a wink. I shook my head at him as he continued. “But it’s what I’m about to do that I don’t want him to know about-”

“Jesus Mike, are you plotting out someone’s murder?” I joke, but suddenly getting very suspicious of his actions. “Because if so, you’re going to need to find a new hiding spot-”

“Calm down, Dean,” Mike says with a chuckle, reaching out and ruffling my hair. “It’s nothing so extreme, it’s just a surprise that I need your help with.”

I frowned a bit at him for messing up my hair, but after hearing what he had to say, I decided that maybe whatever he had planned out was worth listening to. “Go on,” I urge him.

“You know how when we first met I was looking for a birthday present for Vic?” he asked. When I nodded, he continued. “Well, I did find him a gift about a week ago, but as I was heading over to our parents’ house, I had this amazing idea to surprise him!”

I chuckled a bit at Mike and told him, “I think you already mentioned that part-”

“Hush, I wasn’t finished,” he mock scolded, giving me a playful wink. “Anyway, as I was saying, with this surprise and everything- wait, before I continue, do you have any plans today?”

“Oh yeah, I have loads of plans. I was planning on using my day off from work to sit around on my ass and count all the tiles on the floor,” I say rather sarcastically.

Mike laughed at me and shook his head. “Alright Sassy Pants, calm down,” he told me. He then grinned and said, “So, since you obviously aren’t doing anything, how would you like to crash Vic’s birthday party?”

“Woah wait are you serious?” I ask, looking at Mike a bit in shock.

“Totally,” he reassured with a nod. “I mean, you said it yourself that you’ve got nothing to do-”

“Yeah, but this is different,” I cut him off. “This is a family event! I’ve known you guys for what? Almost a month? I can’t just crash something like that.”

“It’s not crashing if you’re being invited,” Mike says.

“But it wasn’t by Vic,” I counter. “He’s invited his closest friends to celebrate with you and your parents, right?” Mike nods and I continue. “Like I said, this is a family event. Yes, I’ve gotten close to you guys over the past few weeks but I can’t just barge in on something like this. Now if he had invited me-”

Mike started to bust up laughing halfway through my statement and I really had to stop to look at him and make sure he was okay. He continued to laugh for several moments before I finally spoke up. “Um, what’s so funny?” I ask.

It took Mike a few moments to collect himself, but once he had, he said, “Oh, it’s just that Vic had some of the same worries.” Mike saw my wide-eyed expression and started to chuckle a bit again before continuing. “Dude, Vic has been toying with the idea of inviting you to his party for like two weeks now. He kept freaking out about it being ‘too soon’ or something like that and how we’d all just met and it’d be weird. I’ve been trying to convince him to just grow a pair and invite you, but he chickened out last minute. Now, without his knowledge, I am here to save both of your sorry asses, get you to this party, and make sure this day is amazing!”

I couldn’t help but laugh a bit at Mike’s enthusiasm at all of this, but something that he had said had caught my attention. “Did Vic really want invite me?” I ask.

“Well duh!” Mike stated like it was obvious. “I mean, we’ve all gotten close Dean, but you and Vic have gotten even closer. He has no problem in calling you one of his close friends, if not one of his bests friends. He’s literally been stressing over whether or not he should invite you to this for awhile now.”

I let all of what Mike sink in, and I couldn’t just help but taken aback by some of it. “Wow,” I softly say, immediately feeling stupid for saying that. “I mean, I didn’t know he felt that way-”

“Woah, calm down Dean, you’re making this sound like he loves you or something,” Mike jokes with a grin plastered on his face.

“Shut up,” I say, laughing a bit at him and rolling my eyes. Mike just smiled at me and after a moment, I asked, “So when is the party?”

“Everyone’s basically planned to be there around noon, but it’s super casual,” Mike explains. “People will be there earlier than that and even later than that, and after, we all basically just stay the whole day.”

“Oh, okay cool,” I say. “I’ll head out later then I guess, so if you could just give me the address-”

“Oh no,” Mike says with a grin, “you’re coming with me. It’s more of a surprise this way anyway,” he adds with a playful wink.

I laughed a bit at him and said, “Alright, fine, so are you coming by later-”

“Nope, we’re leaving now-”

“Now?!” I yell in surprise.

“Relax, I was going to let you change first if you wanted,” Mike reassure with a bit of a laugh. “I actually have to go pick up my gift for Vic and then our parent’s place is about half an hour away without too much traffic, so the timing will work out perfectly.”

“Are you sure?” I ask with a sigh.

Mike just smirked at me and crossed his arms. “Have I ever been wrong before?” he joked.

“Well, there was this one time-”

“Just shut up and go get dressed, Dean!” Mike shouts with a laugh, causing me to laugh a bit as well as he lightly shoved me towards the direction of my bedroom. I shook my head at him and called out, “Make yourself at home! I’ll be ready in a few minutes.”

Mike shouted back some sort of response but it was a bit muffled from the click of my door and the muffling nature of my bedroom walls. As soon as I was in my room, I immediately began to rummage through the small amount of clothes I had in my closet. I know it was probably a casual thing and no one would care what I showed up in, but you know, I was a girl. I cared about my outfit and there was no way in hell that I was going to go out without my outfit looking decent.

I quickly changed out of the soffe shorts I was wearing and pulled on the first pair of pants I could find, which just so happened to be my black ripped skinnies. Then I peeled off the long sleeve shirt I had been sleeping in recently and changed my bra before rummaging through the shirts. I was well aware of the fact that it was early February in San Diego and while it wasn’t extremely cold it was still a tad chilly, so I knew a long sleeve shirt or jacket was a must. After a lot of debating and struggling to find the perfect shirt, I finally decided on my Metallica baseball tee and threw a black and red flannel over the top to provide any extra warmth I might need. After slipping on my black Vans and making sure I was still wearing my paper airplane pendant (the pendant that I never under any circumstance have taken off), I ran over to my dresser mirror and tousled up my hair a bit. I didn’t bother with makeup, because really, I hardly ever wore it and when I did, it was in small amounts.

Once I was finally happy with my outfit, I grabbed my wallet (which just so happens to be Star Wars themed) off the dresser and headed out to meet Mike.

“So we’re heading out now, right?” I ask, making Mike jump a bit off the couch in surprise.

“What? Oh, uh yeah, right,” Mike told me, properly getting up from the couch this time. “And don’t you look rather spiffy-”

“Shut up dude and let’s just go!” I cry with a bit of laugh, shoving him towards the front door. Mike joined in on the laughter and after we checked that the coast was clear, we both booked it down to the parking garage so he could retrieve his car.

“It’s this way,” he told me, directing me to his car. We both got into his little grey sedan and after we both we’re buckled in, he looked over at me with one of his signature grins and asked, “Ready Dean?”

I smirked a bit and just shook my head at him. “Just shut up and drive Mike,” I joked, causing him to laugh at me as he started up his car and drove out of the parking garage. Then, we were off to retrieve Mike’s present and to Vic’s birthday party.

Well, it took me a week but here's the next chapter! I've also decided that for this chapter and the rest of the book that I'll be providing links to Dean's outfit (that is if I find them to be important enough to link xD) here in the notes, so speaking of:
