A Match Into Water

Chapter Two

"My name's Dean."

Those were the first words out of my mouth as I got over my state of shock. They were sarcastic, they were blunt, and overall, it just made the both Mike and Vic laugh. Vic smiled at me as he got over his fit of laughter as another smile graced his lips. "I know, but 'darling' seems a bit more catchy," he says, but as I gave him a rather unamused look, he just held his hands up in surrender and added, "But I'll remember from now to never do that."

"Thank you Vic, that's really kind of you," I say, unable to stop the slight smile from creeping onto my face.

"Well I do try my best," he counters, returning my smile and causing me to giggle a bit.

"Woah, wait, you two know each other?" Mike suddenly asks, as if the fact that Vic and I knew each other was finally setting in.

"Well, we are neighbors, Mike," I tell him, turning to look at his slightly confused face. "That being said, I don't know him very well. I literally just talked to him last night- though I could have sworn you were drunk," I add, looking back over at Vic with a raised eyebrow.

"Hey, just because I had a beer in my hand-"

Mike's face brightens and he snaps his fingers like he was a cartoon character that just figured something else out. "Wait, so this is the girl you were telling me about this morning?" he exclaimed. "Dude! If only I had known she was this cool..."

I blushed a bit, but looked at Vic, who's cheeks also bore a bit of a pink tint to them, and asked, "Wait, you were talking about me to your friends?"

"Ehh," Vic managed to get out, shrugging a bit and looking as innocent as possible. "I mean really, Mike's my brother, but honestly, I just mentioned you briefly-"

"More like talked about you for an hour straight," Mike smirked, waggling his eyebrows at Vic, who just frowned at his brother unapprovingly.

"I thought you were too hungover to remember anything I said this morning," Vic bluntly stated. Mike just shrugged, winked at the both of us, and then ran off towards some other part of the store.

I sat there and watched Mike go for a moment before shaking my head. "So, is he always like this?" I ask, trying to ignore Mike's flirtacious suggestions from moments ago. Vic just chuckled and shook his head. "Unfortunately, yeah," he told me with a smile. "After awhile though, you sort of get used it-"

A small giggle escaped my lips as I smiled up at Vic. "Well I would hope so," I joked. "I mean, after all, he is your brother-"

"Well that doesn't necessarily mean anything," Vic pointed out, chuckling a bit himself. "I may have known him for my whole life, but there's still some shit that asshole pulls that I'm not used to or even see coming."

"That's understandable," I admit, shrugging a bit and smiling at Vic. A comfortable silence fell between us momentarily before Vic broke the silence.

"So, about earlier," Vic said, rubbing the back of his neck as he began, "I really wasn't talking about you like Mike was saying, I just-"

"Oh, so you were talking about me then," I say, teasing him slightly about it.

Vic just laughed at me and shrugged. "Gulity as charged," he says casually. "But seriously, I just told him I met a girl outside my apartment yesterday with cool hair. That's about it."

"Well, in retrospect, that could have many sexual undertones," I joke, winking at him and causing him to laugh yet again. I shook my head and then replayed the words he just said in my head. "Wait, you think my hair's cool?" I suddenly asked.

"Yeah!" he said enthusiastically. "It's really bold, and honestly, the white suits you. And it brings out your eyes," he adds, causing me to blush a bit before he continues. "I sort of have a bit of an appreciation for dyed hair anyway."

"Oh really?" I asked him.

He nodded. "Yeah, I really do," he told me earnestly.

I felt my cheeks flush a bit from his honesty and I couldn't help the small smile forming on my lips. "Well, thanks," I tell him. "And to be honest, this is the first time I've actually died my hair."

"Is it now?" Vic asked, a small spark of curiousity forming in his eyes.

I nodded a bit as I started to explain. "I've always wanted to dye my hair, but until recently, I never really found the inspriation to do so," I say, shrugging a bit as an afterthought.

"Well it's cool that you were finally able to do something like that," Vic told me encouragingly. "It's always great when someone's able to do something they've always wanted to do- and seriously, you're totally rocking the white," he adds with a grin. "Not many people can do that."

"Oh really?" I ask a bit in jest. "Most older folks do a pretty good job at pulling off white hair."

"Are you sure about that?" Vic counters, his mouth twitching into a bit of a smile. "I've seen some pretty bad hair-dos on some of those grannies-"

"Dude, I said most older people can pull it off," I say, laughing a bit at Vic. "No, but yeah, some of those grannies need some major help."

"I know, right?" Vic exaggerated, sighing dramatically and rolling his eyes. "Those ol' gals need to get their hair and their life together-"

"Okay, so if you two nerds are done talking about hair," Mike interrupts, rounding the opposite corner of the CD racks, "can we leave? I can't really do any shopping with the birthday boy standing right here-"

"Mike," Vic began, "you do realize that no matter what type of gift you get me, I'm going to find out about it before the party, anyway?"

Mike groaned at that, as if he suddenly remembered that someone was going to spill the beans on Vic's present before the actual birthday. "Fucking Jaime," he grumbled under his breath, looking away and scowling at the tile floor beneath him.

Vic just smiled and shrugged as if to say 'What can I say?'. "Hey, you know that Jaime can't keep that big ol' mouth of his shut-"

"Doesn't mean it's not annoying or inconvient," Mike shot back.

"Touche," Vic agreed.

The two brothers started talking about something else, but I started tuning them out. Don't get me wrong, it was kind of funny to watch two interact with each other, but I suddenly felt a little out of place, like when you're tagging along with your friend to go to a movie and you end up third-wheeling because said friend conviently forgot to mention their boyfriend/girlfriend was going too. I didn't belong here with the two of them, and in fact, I almost left before I heard something that caught my attention.

"You wouldn't," Mike said cautiously, watching his brother with wide eyes.

"Well, when you start throwing around stories like bringing up embarrassing shit like that from the past, then yes, yes I would," Vic replied, crossing his arms over his chest and smugly smirking at his brother.

"You're bluffing," Mike loudly quipped.

"Am I?" Vic questioned, matching Mike loud tone.

Mike gulped at that, and it seemed like for a moment he was genuinely concerned or maybe even a little scared, which made me want to know what exactly I had missed from their conversation. Mike opened his mouth to probably shoot back some sort of smart remark towards Vic, but I finally jumped in on their conversation before things went downhill.

"As much as I hate to interrupt this, because believe me, I'd love to hear about all of this, but I think you two should wait to start talking shit until you're out of the store," I tell the two, eyeing the annoyed looking customers and employees who were all but staring us down.

Vic and Mike finally looked away from each other and around at their surroundings, almost as if they were just remembering that they were in a very public place. Mike cleared his throat and looked back towards the two of us. "Yep, storytime can wait."

Vic nodded. "Agreed," he said, "So let's say we blow this joint then-"

Mike immediately broke out into a large grin and let out a loud "Fuck yeah!" He threw his hands into the air and started to run out of the store, cheering, "Let's goooo!"

As he ran out of the store, I had to stiffle a laugh as I watched him go, and even Vic let out a bit of a laugh as well before running out after his brother. I almost ran out with him, but then I stopped and just stood there a bit hesitantly. Did I want to go with them? Of course I did, but I was pretty sure I wasn't welcome. Sure they were cool and maybe thought I was cool too, but we just barely met. I mean, I can't exactly just follow them everywhere, right? Besides, this was just another way for me to get close, and I promised myself that I wouldn't do so...not this time.

Vic had almost reached the door when he finally looked around and noticed I wasn't running beside him. He slowed to a stop and turned around to face me with a rather confused looked on his face. "Hey Dean," he called out, "aren't you coming?"

My head immediately shot up to look towards him and now, it was my turn to be confused. "You want me to come with?" I asked

Vic smiled at me and shrugged. "Yeah, why not?" he said. "I mean, you don't have any other plans do you?"

I felt my mouth turn up in a slight smile as I admitted, "No, not really-"

"Then what are you waiting for?" Vic asked, a slight smirk tugging at his lips. "Let's get going- Mike's probably already managed to get himself into some sort of trouble anyway."

I couldn't help but laugh at that as I ran to catch up with him. Once I had, Vic threw open the doors of the shop and we ran, trying to catch up to wherever Mike had gone off to. The two of us looked over at each other for a moment and a small string of giggles escaped our lips. In that moment, it felt like we were best friends or something, like we had known each other our entires lives instead of a few mere minutes. I don't think it had quite hit me yet, but some part of me knew that if I continued to hang out with Vic and Mike that this feeling wasn't going to go away- if anything our budding friendship would just continue to grow. As much as I wanted that, the small dark voice in the back of my mind was beginning to nag at me, constantly screaming a very blatant reminder towards me:

I promised myself I wasn't going to get close to anyone. If I did, it could ruin all of my chances at getting a new life.

Then again, what if I did? Would that be the abosolute worst thing to happen? Probably not, which is why in that moment, I threw all caution to the wind and just ran. Did I care about any kind of consequences for this?

Absolutely not.
