This Love Was Out of Control

Michigan Goes Hard

*Vic’s POV*

It’s been two months since our first free show in Albany. Pierce the Veil is becoming a massive hit! We even have our first SOLD OUT show right here in Sterling Heights, Michigan! It’s a full house today and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us.

I opened my eyes because the bus went over a huge rock, bumping and shaking the hell out of my bunk. It was 9 am anyways. I need to get up. The first thing I did was make a Twitter. All of us completely forgot that night in New York City where this boy told us to make one. I searched my brother’s name to see if he made one and I guess he did. He had a whopping 742 followers. Damn, that escalated quickly. It says that he made it a week ago. He only has one tweet so far.

His first tweet said “testing” for a status. I looked through his followers and found Jaime, Tony, Adam, Kevin, and Frenchi. Jaime and Tony also had the word “testing” for a status. What losers! Like put something interesting to start out with!

I followed all 5 of them. My first tweet is gonna be better than theirs.

-@piercethevic: Sup-

Yeah, I’m cool.

My phone quickly beeped and had a “2” on the Twitter app. I checked it and the first one said @ptvjaime is now following you and the second one read -@ptvjaime: “@piercethevic: Sup” you’re awake! Come in da living room-

I fluffed out my shoulders and headed towards the living room. The smell of fresh orange juice filled my nose. I could already taste the eggs and bacon in my mouth. The sizzling sounds were setting me off.

-@piercethevic: the smell of crispy bacon in the morning…muy bien-

I put my phone away and frolicked to the counter. Literally, I frolicked like a dumbass. Everyone was already feasting on their breakfast like it was their last one ever. I just have to make a tweet now. I quickly dug my hand into my pocket and reached for my phone, hiding it under the counter.

-@piercethevic: my band mates are fatasses-

I heard my phone beep a minute later.

-@ptvjaime: “@piercethevic: my band mates are fatasses” excuse you?! I love me some bacon and eggs foo!-

“You’re fat,” I said to Jaime sitting in front of me, who was chomping on his eggs.

I’m fat? You’re the one that has no meat in your bones!” Jaime joked, kicking me.

“Are you saying I’m too skinny?”

“Guys! Shut up and eat! We need to start unpacking our shit again to get ready for the show,” Kevin bellowed at us while walking away. “And uh, Vic? Pick up your toys! Stop leaving your shit everywhere. There‘s no where to walk on this damn bus.”

The show is not for another 10 hours. And when Kevin says “my toys,” he means my clothes and equipment.

-@piercethevic: did I mention Kevin is a dick head?;p-

“Michigan, hands up!” I said into the mic during the half way mark in Hold On Till May. I strummed my guitar while everyone had their hands flowing side to side, reaching for the ceiling in the amphitheater.

This feeling was amazing, something I’ve never felt before with so many fans. I just want a chance to hug them all. I’ve had so many boys and girls come up to me in the past month and say Pierce the Veil saved their lives. That’s just…I can’t fathom it. It’s so much to take in at once. To think that we saved lives with our music is absolutely wonderful to hear. These fans need us. Pierce the Veil needs them.

Real bands save fans. Real fans save bands. That’s how it works. They keep us alive by buying our merch and coming to shows. We keep them alive by playing music and giving them hope.

“Okay guys, we’re gonna do something we’ve never done before,” I started. The crowd screamed like crazy. “Mike and I used to be in a band called Yesterday’s Mistakes. We created a song with others guys and performed it a long time ago, but no one seemed to like it. Pierce the Veil can change that! Let me hear you scream!”

As the crowd screamed and jumped, I faced Jaime and Tony, signaling them that we were gonna perform the “newer” version. Mike already knew what song it would be.

“I need a girl volunteer for this last song,” I said. All the girls briskly raised their hands, jumping and screaming for me to pick them. “You know, Tony was really quiet for this show so I’m gonna let him decide. Besides, I see him eyeing lots of you girls. Go ahead, Tone, you pick!”

He searched in the crowd of screaming people. Even some boys raised their hands. They obviously didn’t care if I wanted a girl volunteer, but that’s okay. He glanced high and low for the perfect girl. And then, he spotted her. He pointed at her and didn’t say a word.

This girl was different. Her hands weren’t raised. She was right in the front of the stage. Her body was thin as a twig and her face expression wasn’t pleasant whatsoever. I have no clue why Tony chose her, but it must’ve been for a damn good reason.

“Hey you, girl in the front,” I said into the mic. She didn’t look up at me. “Long, beautiful black haired girl who doesn’t want to look at me. I wanna see that smile, sweet heart. We choose you so come on up here.”

She sat on the side of the stage. She didn’t move nor did she smile…yet. I can change that.

“What’s your name?” I asked.

“Daniela,” she said.

“Well, Daniela, I want you to be happy because you’re on stage with Pierce the Veil. Here we go.” I turned to the crowd. “This song is called Yeah Boy and Doll Face.” I took the girl’s hand and within an instant, she smiled at me.

Perfect.

I looked into her eyes. Hopefully she doesn’t faint because now she was breathing heavily.

Were you honest when you said,
"I could never leave your bed",
Wake me up and let me know you're alive
And will you fall in love again?
Is the scent slowly spreading?
I've been answering machines all night

And are the doctors dancing in
While the ambulances sing?
Another boy without a sharper knife…

“Give it up for Daniela everyone!” She was lead offstage and back into the crowd. “I want you guys to jump!” The crowd jumped to their feet when I started back up again.

The moment that's where I
Kill the conversation, wrap this up
With a knife that loves to feel
How do you know how deep to go before it's real?

(Take me home)
Can I even complicate your breathing?
I guess I'm just your average boy
This is me with a knife in the back
And a grip on the grass
It's cold and I don't want to be here
I guess I'm never comfortable or situational

Are we losing or beginning
To try a new life without you?

The moment that's where I
Kill the conversation, wrap this up
With a lie that I'm enjoying every minute with myself
And she could make hell feel just like home
So I'm never leaving her alone
But if your lightning lips aren't mine
Then I don't know the awkward stranger to my right
(But she's crying)

I only need one hand to drive
When you're with me
You are my getaway
Oh, no!

And don't you ever feel alone? And don't you wish you were home?
Cut the lust tonight; all right, all right
Tell me why my little Mona Lisa told a lie, lie, lie, lie
Do you want me? Do you want to let me know that you're okay?
A diamond gold ring customized to cut your circulation
But I couldn't let you go; no, I'd never let you go my dear
So keep talking 'cause I love to hear your voice
(Love to hear your voice, love to hear your...)
Voice again

Tony continued the strumming on his guitar while the silence of the crowd grew weak and cheering started to rise up again.

“Thank you guys so much! Goodnight!” I said, waving at everyone in the crowd.

Something doesn’t feel right though. Jaime was holding onto his chest, like something was weighing him down. It’s like the time when my band mates and I went to Kellin’s club while we played Truth or Dare. He looked queasy and unbalanced as I examined him from the middle of the stage.

“Jaime,” I stared at him. He seemed like he was going to puke. “Jaime,” I repeated once more, but a little louder.

He opened his eyes widely and stared at me. He leaned against his mic stand, holding his heart again.

“Are you alright?” I asked, trying to keep him alert.

He fell to his knees, slamming his face on the stage. His eyes quickly shut. That’s when I took action.

“JAIME!” Tony and I roared in unison. We both loosened the straps on our guitars and tossed it to our guitar tech, catching them perfectly in their hands. We ran over to him and dropped to the ground. Tony rolled him over on his back and I tried to keep calm, but I couldn’t.

The audience was abstractly quiet. I heard a lot of “oh my god!” and “Jaime no!” in the crowd.

Mike ran to go get someone working with the paramedics out back where the buses were. Tony pulled Jaime into his lap while I tried to comfort the audience. Tony always acted as if he were Jaime’s dad so he knows what to do. But for now, I’m trying to keep calm. But I’m Mexican, I don’t keep calm! For the audience’s sake, I must.

“Okay guys, I know the show is over, but our bassist just fainted and we don’t know what’s wrong with him,” I said into the mic, taking a breath. “Please just try to stay calm for us because I literally can’t.” My voice just cracked. “And I’m really scared because he‘s the love of my life. He’s my best friend, my everything.” I let a tear roll down my cheek.

*Jaime’s POV*

I was suddenly beginning to feel conscious again. I felt a strong set of hands shake my shoulders harshly. I slowly popped opened one eye and then the other, seeing Tony above me, looking relieved as ever.

“Thank God, you’re not dead,” Tony joked.

Mike came up to me with some random medic guy and a bottle of water. “Here, drink this. But sit up first,” the man said.

I sat up and drank the water. Meanwhile, Vic was talking to the fans. “And I’m really scared because he‘s the love of my life. He’s my best friend, my everything.”

Awww, I’m blushing, really.

The fans gradually started to cheer, scream, shout, smile, whatever they could do to get Vic’s attention on me. He rotated his body around and peered at me with wide eyes.

“Jaime! Jaime! Jaime!” the crowd exhilarated in a chant.

Vic dropped his mic and ran up to me, embracing me in a compacted hug. He freed our hug and pulled my face in, crucially pushing his lips to mine in an urgent way, almost like it was a life-or-death situation.

“Are you alright, love?”

“I’m okay, babe. Just a little dizzy for some reason,” I said, holding my head and staring at him. “My heart randomly stopped.”

“Well that’s not good. Are you sure it stopped, or you just fainted,” Vic asked, trying to clear up the problem.

“No, it literally stopped. I felt it stop.”

He took a quick turn and spoke into the mic. “Alright guys! Thanks for an amazing show! You rocked!”

~~~
We were back in the bus outside the venue. Vic, Mike, and Tony surrounded me sitting on the couch.
“So your heart just gave up out of nowhere and completely shut down for two minutes?” Tony asked.
“Yeah,” I said to him.
“That makes no sense.”
“Well, it happened!” I said angrily, not knowing how to react. “It’s over with. I don’t know why it’s such a big deal. I’m here right now, aren’t I?”
Vic was on his phone just doing whatever. Tony listened in on the conversation.
“You’re selfish as fuck, Jaime,” Mike rolled his eyes while peeking out the window. “You’re our friend. How can you say ‘I don’t know why it’s such a big deal’ when it clearly is! Your heart stopped, you fucking dipshit! We don’t want you to die.”
I got up, ignoring Tony and Mike, and headed to my bunk, laying flat like a board. I pulled out my phone and checked Twitter. This is the first thing I see when I open the app.
-@piercethevic: I guess I don‘t mean anything to you if it‘s not a big deal-
What? I hope he’s not referring to me. I made a tweet, but didn’t tag him in it.
-@ptvjaime: You mean everything to me-
-@piercethevic: why say it then?-
We weren't tagging each other in the status. If he's going to keep this up, I will too.
-@ptvjaime: I didn‘t mean it like that. You‘re my everything too. And I would give up my life just to see you happy-
-@piercethevic: I won‘t be happy unless your here with me-
I smiled at my phone and made another tweet. Oh the jokester I am.
-@ptvjaime: you spelled *you‘re wrong tehee-
-@piercethevic: with all the fans waiting outside our bus in MI, if any of you can guess what color underwear I‘m wearing, I‘ll come outside and take pics-
I immediately face-palmed myself, knowing that all the fans will be deceived. He already got 56 favorites and 23 retweets. I checked out everyone’s tweets to him and there were some funny answers. Some people were like magenta, turquoise, teal, and transparent. Like niggas…just say blue, pink, or some solid color.
-@piercethevic: btw, if you guess the color and say if I‘m wearing boxers or briefs, I‘ll twerk on you-
-@ptvjaime: @piercethevic: why are you doing this to them? Everyone knows you don‘t wear underwear..…oops!-
~~~

*Vic’s POV*

Jaime obviously ruined it for me, but I still went outside after midnight to get pictures with anyone who was still there. Thankfully, there was a small group of people so it wouldn't take long.

Everyone crowded around me, but gave me space as well. Mike came outside with a black sharpie and started signing away at their items.

“I have a question,” I said to the girl before I signed her string bag. “What’s your favorite part about seeing Pierce the Veil live?”

Everyone smiled and listened in, even Mike. “Well, you’re standing there waiting for your favorite band. They were scheduled to go on at 8; it’s now 8:03. You know it’s going to happen, but it still catches you by surprise. The lights go down and a deep bass note, one so deep you feel it in your chest, rumbles from the speakers. Then it happens; everyone rushes forward, pushing the air out of your lungs. Then all that matters is that band and knowing that everyone is just trying to get a little closer to a band they love just as much as you do. Everything is just perfect.”

“I just got goosebumps listening to that,” Mike said shivering. “Perfectly well spoken.”

“Time to clear out. That’s a wrap. We need our sleep. I’m sorry,” I explained. They completely understood and backed away from the bus. They headed towards their cars and we jumped right back in our bus.

What a night. The only thing left to do is watch some TV until I pass out. I flipped on the TV and switched the channel to the news. There’s nothing good on right now.

I felt my eyes grow heavy as I began to cuddle up on the couch. I knew I would be awake in like seven hours because Kevin screams at us to get up.

~~~
It was 1:05 in the morning when I realized I left the TV on. I rubbed my tired eyes and sat up slowly, eyeing Jaime staring at the TV.
“Oh god,” Jaime gasped, flipping his eyes to me and back at the TV. “I was hoping you wouldn’t wake up.”
“Why?” I asked, trying to focus my vision on him.
“See for yourself,” he said glumly, pointing to the TV and sitting next to me.
It’s just the news. What could be so-
'16 year old Olivia Jane Penpraze died today from an attempted suicide, which left her brain dead. Her parents made the hardest decisions of their lives. They had no other option but to take her off life support. The teen faced depression all her life. The constant bullying, teasing, telling her to kill herself finally succeeding. Doctors tried…'
My heart was beating 1,000 beats per second. I swear it was about to stop right then and there. I couldn’t even think. I let the news drift away from my mind. All I could feel was nothing.
“Liv. She promised,” I murmured with sorrowfulness. “Two months ago, she promised me she wouldn’t kill herself. She…she promised me.” I could no longer hold back my tears. They dripped from my eyes and streamed down my face, leaving streaks behind.
“I’m sorry, Vic. I know how much helping her meant to you.” He put a hand on my shoulder. “I’m here for you though, if you wanna talk about it-”
“Of course I don’t wanna talk about it! She fucking promised me she wouldn’t kill herself! And now look at her! She’s fucking dead, Jaime! DEAD! I can’t bring her back! She‘s gone!” I jumped up from the couch and ran to my bunk, slamming my body hard against the bed and bawling my eyes out.
~~~

I couldn’t sleep. I pulled the covers off of me and reached for my notebook. I know exactly what I have to do and I don’t care what my bands mates say.

-@piercethevic: I’m doing this song for Olivia Penpraze. She’s my inspiration now-

I've been having this dream that we can fly,
So darling, close your eyes.
'Cause you're about to miss everything! (about to miss everything)
About to miss everything! (about to miss everything)
