Riders On The Storm

Schools Out For Summer

"I cannot believe you just did that." You say to Diana through giggles as she carries you to the parking lot filled with students trying to get to their cars.

Diana: "Did you see the look on her face? CLASSIC!"

You both laugh until she puts you down when you reach the car. You walk over to the passenger side, as Diana climbs into the driver's side.

"Well look what we have here."

You go stiff because you recognize the voice behind you.

He gets closer to you. His warm breath tickling your neck.

"How's life without me? Boring? I've missed you a lot ( insert your name here)."

You can't respond, or even move, or even breathe.

As Diana gets out of the car, you see confusion on her face, and then pure anger as she realizes who's so close to you. Making you shake and tremble as if it was a cold day.

Diana: " _______, get in the car now."

He lightly grazes your cheek with the back of his hand. You flinch as if he punched you in the face.

Diana runs over to you, prys you away from him, and sits you in the car, closing the door so hard the alarm starts to sound.

You can hear her screaming at him through the windows and over the car alarm.

"Seriously, Garret? What the hell are you doing here? She doesn't want to see you! You don't even go here you freakin phyco maniac. Remember they kicked you out because of what you did to her last year. The next time I see you around here, I'll do the same thing you did to her except your ass will be dead."

She doesn't wait for him to respond and stomps over to the car. She gets in and slams the door. She turns it on, backs out of the parking lot fast and Garret jumps out of the way. Screaming vulgur words at you as Diana almost runs him over. She speeds out of the parking lot. You look in the rear view mirror back at him. He stares back, like he can see into you.

You rest your head against the cold window.
Trying not to break down. Garret used to be the love of your life. You've known each other since you were kids. When you guys started dating he would walk you to class, hold your books for you, and walk you home everyday. 3 years into your relationship with him, something in him became obsessive.

You rub the scar on your head as it begins to throb from thinking back to that day.

About a year of not letting you hang out with your family, your friends, and not letting you listen to your favorite bands, you decided to break up with him. But now looking back, you realize what you did wrong. You were at his house and you started to pick a fight over something really stupid. It was the regular, him cursing at you and punching holes in the walls with his fists, you screaming and crying about how different of a person he was from when you started dating. You remember exactly how the scene played out. You screamed at him "it's over! I don't love you anymore." His house became quiet. He put his hands to his side and said nothing. You stood looking at him for a long time, and then something you'll never forget happened, something that still haunts you in your dreams at night.

He smiled.

He smiled at you as if you said something funny.

You remember turning around, by instinct, and trying to run, but the all the air gets knocked out of you as he grabs you by your hair, using all his strength to yank you back into his arms.

"You're not going anywhere." He whispers calmly into your ear.

You let out a scream but he stops you, gagging a scarf or shirt into your mouth. His arms tighten around your ribs, you can fell them and even hear them being crushed inside your body.

The last thing you remember is sticky warm liquid running down your face, getting into your eyes, and a rusty smell that made you sick to your stomach.

You will later find out that, the love of your life, stabbed you right in the head. Missing the most important part of your brain, but damaging your ability to remember certain things. He also broke 6 of your ribs. After about six months of physical therapy and counseling. Your recovery was remarkable, in 6 months you could walk again, think for yourself, and go back to school.

Diana rests her hand on your shoulder. You look over at her not realizing that tears were running down your face.

She takes you into her arms, you let a couple tears spill over.

Diana: "Do you want to go inside my house and and listen to some Pier---."

I ran out of the car and to the front door, jumping with excitement.

She smiles as she gets out of the car too.

She knows that listening to the band that saved you in the hardest 6 months of you life, would make any bad day of your life, worth living.
