Worlds Over, Time to Die. Nothing Left but our Souls Inside.

August 4, 2016- Erin Easchow

I can’t even put into words how I currently feel about the government. How could they shoot at us and then turn around and try to help us. This is the most horrible thing that I have ever witnessed in my whole life and that’s including the things I’ve seen in the last year and a half. It’s not like we haven’t had to deal with enough. Tony’s family is my family and if losing his mom and Rebecca isn’t enough, now we have lost more. I can’t believe it they just killed them didn’t even think twice. They decided to act first ask questions later and now I have lost one of my best friends. I just can’t believe she’s gone now. I want to believe that she’s happy now, that she’s with Mike but it’s just so hard when she died the way she did. She didn’t deserve this. She’s a hero.
After we got a hold of that van we decided the best bet would be to go to D.C. Justin was bleeding out really bad but we promised him that he’d be okay when we got there. How can we live with ourselves now knowing that we promised to save him and he died anyway, and Nick, he never saw it coming. I will never be able to not see what happened to us. I will always remember pulling up to the end of the road, a couple yards from the gate. All of us jumping out of the Van waving and yelling for help. We must have looked like idiots to them, but we were desperate. Some guards opened the gate and started walking towards us. Tony and Jack took Justin out of the Van and started helping him get to the guards. I remember when I looked over towards the guards they looked scared. They looked at us like we monsters. One of them pulled out a Walkie Talkie and started talking into it. Another group of guard started walking out to help us when one of the first 2 yelled “Get back! Some of them have been infected!” They all started running back towards the gate and before we could even process what was happening a bullet went straight through Nicks head. “Get Back!” Jaime yelled as he grabbed Jessica and dived behind the Van, and then another bullet took out Justin. I immediately grabbed Tony and ran towards the van as well. “Where’s Liam!?” I heard Katelynne scream. I wasn’t in the position to look but Alysha was she was peering around the side. “It’s okay Katelynne. He’s behind a bush over near the woods. He’ll be okay.” She tried to reassure her but it didn’t help she continued screaming his name. I couldn’t see what was happening but I assume Liam heard his mom and tried to run over to us because all I remember was hearing Alysha yell “Dammit” and run out towards him. Then I heard the gunshot. I couldn’t see what happened but I think I already knew at that moment. Tears streamed down my face. Tony pulled me into him trying to comfort me but it wasn’t helping. Jack looked around the side of the Van to see what happened. “Liam! Get over here now!” He yelled. “Faster!” Liam ran around the corner tears covered his face. “I’m sorry.” He whispered. “I didn’t know what to do.” Katelynne grabbed her son and pulled him into a hug both were crying. A hand patted his head and I looked up to see it was Kellin’s. He looked heartbroken. “It’s okay son. You didn’t know. It’s okay.” There is no doubt that Alysha and Kellin still felt some way about each other. It wasn’t the kind of feeling like how he had for his wife, but they definitely cared deeply about each other. “Jack is Alysha alright?” Tony asked and I feared for his answer. “She’s down but she’s definitely still alive.” I exhaled deeply knowing that she still had a chance. “Well what do we do now?” Avery asked she was holding Ciel who was fussing and she obviously did not know how to calm him down. “Here Avery, give me Ciel.” I wiped away my tears and took the baby from her. “I honestly don’t know what to do; they have a sniper and dozens of armed men. We have two guns and a kitchen knife.” Tony said harshly which made me start crying again. He started rubbing my back. At that point I didn’t know who was really calming who down. Mrs. Fuentes took her grandson from me. She seemed to be holding it together more than any of us. “Shit!” Jack yelled. We looked at his curiously “Pass me a gun, two guards are coming.” Jaime handed him the gun he had, Tony pulled me behind him as he pulled out his knife. “Any one that doesn’t have a weapon back up!” Jack whispered sternly.” The guards came around the side of the vehicle and all weapons were drawn. “We’re not going to hurt you, as long as no more of you are infected. One of them said. “Please put your weapons down.” “None of us were infected in the first place!” Tony yelled at them. “We were attacked by a group of people back a few cities in Virginia, we came here to get help!” I barely see Tony angry, so seeing him like this was actually scary for me, but how could I blame him they just killed our friends. The guards looked shocked; it made me want to grab the knife from Tony so I could stab them both. “I’m terribly sorry, it seems like we made a mistake.” He looked apologetic but it didn’t mean anything to any of us. “Yeah, sorry, that really helps our friends, our family, doesn’t it?” They didn’t say anything so Tony did. “Now can we go see if she’s still alive or are we going to get shot at when we walk out from behind this van?” He pointed towards Alysha. He lifted up his walkie talkie to his mouth. “We are all clear down here, nobody has been affected you can go back to your regular duties. Do you copy?” He said professionally into it. Several copy’s came back through on the device and he nodded his head yes at us. He didn’t have to tell me twice. I sprinted over to her as fast as I could. “Alysha, Alysha!” I shook her trying to get her to come to. She started waking up I quickly put pressure on her wound trying to keep her from bleeding more. “Get her help!” I yelled back at the guards. They were on their walkie talkie and they better be trying to get back up to help. “Alysha, sweetie you’re going to be alright.” She looked around seeing who was there. “Kellin.” She said faintly. He kneeled down next to me tears in his eyes. “I’m right here sweetheart, don’t worry. We’re getting you help.” She started crying. “No. It’s too late, I’m going to die.” We tried denying it but she just kept shaking her head. “I love you guys so much.” She said “Where’s Vivian?” I looked up to see where Mrs. Fuentes was she was still back near the Van with the baby. Tony ran over to her they exchanged a few words and he took Ciel. Mrs. Fuentes came over to us as fast as her body would let her. “Oh sweetie, Alysha darling, I’m right here. I was with your nephew but I’m here.” She took her hand. “I’m going to miss you so much, you know I consider you my mom.” A single tear fell from Mrs. Fuentes eye. “I know sweetie I love both you and Danielle like my own daughters.” Alysha tried to hold back more tears. She nodded. “Yeah, can you tell Vic and Danielle that I love them and that I’m so happy for them. I probably seemed angry the other day when Vic told me he was going to ask Danielle to marry her but that’s just because I was upset because I’d never be able to have Mike propose to me. I just want them to know that I am more than happy for them. I love them so much.” They were both crying. “I promise I will. Just make sure you tell Mike how much we miss him down here, and that were not mad at him for what he did.” Alysha started smiling. “I will.” She looked back over to Kellin and I “I guess that’s the one good thing now, ever since Mike died I’ve wanted nothing more than to see him again and I guess this was the best way to be able to.” I smiled at her knowing how happy she looks even with the condition she’s in. “You know you’re the craziest person I’ve ever met.” I said through tears. “God, how am I going to live without you?” She reached her hand up to my face as she wiped tears away from my face. I held onto her arm. “You will, trust me. You have so many people that love you and you have Tony, soon you will forget all about me.” “I could never forget you you’re one of my best friends.” “I know I was just kidding.” She giggled. She looked from me to Kellin and over to Mrs. Fuentes. Her eyes started growing heavy, she didn’t have much longer. Kellin got closer to her. “Don’t be scared, were right here with you until the end and know you don’t have to fight it anymore if you don’t want to.” He kissed her forehead and she let her eyes fall shut. We waited a few moments before Kellin check her pulse. He started crying really hard. “She’s gone.” He cried. I pulled him into a hug and we both sat their crying for awhile Katelynne walked over and Kellin turned to his wife and she hugged him too. Tony handed the baby to Jessica and came over and hugged me. Meanwhile another group of guards walked up to us.
“We are, um, we’re really sorry for your loss.” The guard in front began to say. “Yeah, sorry with no help from you assholes.” Tony got in his face but I pulled him back. I pulled him into me so he’d calm down. He was upset and being irrational but we all were. “We feel really terrible about what happened. We take full blame and we know that it’s not anything that can make up for what happened, but we have prepared a house for you all to live in together within the walls and we have clothes, and food and water for you all. Also once you settle in we can get you all medical exams and anything else you might need. I see some of you have injuries from the attack you experienced yesterday so we can take you to our medical facility right away.” I looked down at my ankle that was the first time since it happened that I actually remembered being shot. I guess the adrenaline kept me from feeling the pain that I am currently experiencing as I write this. “There are two more of us that aren’t with us; they don’t know we’re here. They drove to Richmond from where we were and we suppose to meet us back here.” Jaime told the guards. They looked at each other. “If one of you wants to come with us we can drive out there and get them. It’s the least we can do.” Jaime nodded. “Then I’ll go.” He volunteered. “When can we go?” The guard told him as soon as he could get the truck. So now we are inside the walls of D.C receiving care while we wait for Jaime and the guard to get back with Vic and Danielle. They told us normally when new people come in they do screening tests and get our information from us but they said that they can wait under the circumstances so we’re not allowed to leave the medical center yet. Hopefully we can leave soon cause I really just want to be alone at the moment.

OMG!!!! I'm so happy right now! Can this happen for real though?!
For some reason I fell like D.C has something to do with a quarantine. Like they get there but they find this wall of sorts and they're denied entry because they've been in the "infected" zone. It could be all of the zombie/disease books I've been reading, too. I read "The Girl with All of the Gifts" by M.R Carey before this story and just reread "Dreamcatcher" by Stephen King. Can't wait for more!
