Worlds Over, Time to Die. Nothing Left but our Souls Inside.
July 17, 2015- Kellin Quinn
It has been too many days since I have written in this little black book. A lot has happened but I'm sure everyone has written about it all.
With the summer heat of the West Coast kicking in, we decided to slow our pace a bit. We were so close to being out of California. We had been at a hospital for a few weeks just recouperating so we could move and it gave us all a lot of time to think. Life is too short. It could all end at any moment. Any one of us could get sick and pass.
I was currently walking around our most recent selter. Everyday was getting more risky since the heat was almost unbearable for most of us. The moral was low in the group and if someone had seen us, it would have been clearly written on all of our faces that we each wanted to leave for good.
We hadn't run into many zombies, maybe only a handful, since we have gotten closer to the border. It was like they all had been avoiding going here. It felt normal. It looked normal; Almost untouched by what had happened just months prior. The houses, businesses, cars; they were all fine.
"Hey, Kellin." someone called from behind me.
"Does this seem weird to you?" Tony asked as he looked around our surroundings. I nodded my head and soon all of the guys of the group came round and we started discussing our next plan of action. Seeing that everything here was practically fine, gave us some kind of hope that everywhere else was fine.
"So you think we should stay around here until all the supplies are gone and then move? What kind of plan is that?" Vic said with skepticism.
"If we can prepare ourselves for a pretty long journey then there is more of a chance for survival is this is all some kind of false hope. I just want everyone to be well nourished and rested before we go anywhere. This place is kind of like a godsend." I said as I pointed around to the pristine looking neighborhood.
"It's a logical plan." Mike mumbled and everyone nodded.
"So we scope this place for all it's got and then go?" Jaime said and we all nodded once again.
We broke apart to look around for useful things. It was safe enough to go out without a secondary person but we all had some kind of weapon on us just in case.
I found a lot of clothes and food to bring back along with some medicine in case we got sick. There was a lot more inside of the house I searched but I would have to talk to the others in the group if I wanted to go back.
~~
We had all been out the whole day each going house to house and bringing back important stuff back. Vic had found more water bottles as well as food. Mike had found more food and some weapons but nobody found anything as useful as Jaime did. That boy found an SUV. A full of gas SUV at that.
The town we were in hadn't totally gone to shit because the water and gas in the house was still working. The girls had found this out while being home all day.
After sorting out all of the things we had brought back, we made a pretty decent dinner then got to take quick showers. It was almost like we were back in our normal lives. It was all too simple.
I was on guard tonight with Tony. There wasn't much traffic besides a random animal here and there that we had to kill.
"So, do you really think this is the end? Like the end of our journey?" He asked quietly.
"I hope so." I sighed. I didn't want to think about it too much for this could all be a ruse.
"Hey, shift's up guys. Go get some sleep." Jaime said and Tony and I walked back inside.
I would be lying if I said I wasn't excited and hopeful that this was the end. I just had a strange feeling that our journey is far from over.
I must get some rest now because we have so much more scavenging to do.
Until next time~
