I Introduce The Selfish Machine

Thirty Nine

I stood in the kitchen of the Fuentes' residence, scrolling through recipes on my iPad, trying to find something good to make for dinner for the guys. Downstairs, I heard drumming and screaming, and that was all I had heard for hours. Kellin and the rest of the guys from Sleeping With Sirens flew to San Diego with their equipment so the guys could rerecord in their studio downstairs, but just like Mike said, it's easier said than done.
I was about to throw my stupid iPad on the ground. I just wanted to order takeout but nooooo, Seren said I needed practice being a wife and that I needed to make dinner eleven people. This is also easier said than done.
I finally found a recipe. Pasta with tomato sauce. Easy enough. I raided the Fuentes' cabinets in search for the ingredients needed for the pasta. I was almost falling in the fridge when the door to the kitchen swung open. I looked to see gold flats and knew who was standing there.
"Seren, thank God you're here. I'm trying to be a wife and it's just not working at all- what's wrong?" I looked up to see Seren twisting her hair intensely, something she only did when she was really nervous.
Her eyes darted around, and she was listening closely to make sure they were still practicing downstairs. "I know where the tapes are."
My jaw dropped, and the tomato rolled out of my hand. "I can wash that, right?" I asked. Seren nodded her head. "Okay, now what?"
"I was, uh, I was at lunch with my lawyer friends, and she asked if I could go to this illegal downloading site to see what information I could get for her to help testify. So, I get, uh, I get back to work and look it up, and I went to music, and Collide With The Sky, in it's entirety, was on there. Piper, even the outtakes were on there. The computer downstairs had to be hacked and now everything's online."
I was furious. They all worked so hard on the album and was so devastated when it was gone, and some idiot was posting it on the internet for free downloading? This was their career that was being ruined, because people couldn't wait for the CD to come out. "Excuse me." I said, pushing past her to head to the basement. She grabbed my wrist.
"Where are you going?"
"To tell them, where do you think?"
"Piper, we need to wait!"
"No, we don't! We need to tell them and get that taken down as soon as possible." I pulled myself out of Seren's grip and ran down the stairs quickly. Tony had his headphones on and was strumming quickly to a song. Mike was drumming and Vic and Jaime we working on vocals. I heard Seren yelling to stop me, but I was already downstairs.
"Hey, Piper! What's up?" Kellin asked, walking up to me.
I looked Kellin dead in the eyes. "We found the album."
Kellin's jaw dropped, then he waved at Tony to get his attention. Tony looked up and saw me, then put the guitar down and ran over. "What's up, babe?" He asked, the headphones hanging around his neck.
"Seren found the album." Seren was now behind me this time, and I could feel the stare of betrayal.
"What?" Tony looked at Seren.
Seren sighed, and told them the whole story. By the end of it, both bands were crowding around us, listening intensely to Seren's story. Vic ran his hands through his hair. "We're calling the cops." He said.
"Vic, no." Seren said.
"No? Seren, this is our career at stake and you're saying no?" Vic snapped.
"Right now is probably not the best time to argue." Tony said, trying to calm down Vic.
"There's a username on the site, we can track them down." Seren said through her teeth, pissed at Vic. "Let's just see who it is and we can go from there."
Vic rolled his eyes and walked away, but Mike jumped on the computer, and with Seren's help, found the website.
"Whoever hacked the computer probably stole the equipment, too." I whispered to Tony as he gripped onto my hips and buried his head in my shoulder. I felt his breathing increase.
"I really hope so." He said.
I awkwardly ran my hand over Tony's hair, since he was behind me, trying to keep him calm while they search. My fingers were shaking as Mike and Seren started to whisper to each other in what seemed like disbelief.
"We found who the account belongs to." Seren spoke up.
"And we found their Facebook." Mike said.
"Well?" Vic said, biting on his fingernails.
"It's ran by a 12 year old girl."
The whole room fell silent. A 12 year old girl could not hack and steal equipment, could she? Is it even possible?
"Call your lawyer friend and tell them to track her." Vic said. "We need our stuff back, and we're going to get it back, even if it means breaking a 12 year old's heart."
