Chapter 9 ~ Party with Austin

I feel like a teenager again. Never did I imagine that I could be having dinner with a rock star. Not your average rock star but a famous one that sincerely cares and loves his fans through his song and messages. He is none other than my favourite rock star, Austin Carlile, who also happens to be one of my childhood buddies since high school.
Austin had called me earlier today as I just finished my morning swimming by the beach, to invite Jaime and me over to his house for dinner. “Come over to my house tonight, Marcy and I show you the ONLY way to barbeque meat. God!!! Remembering of how you literally burn those rib-eyes to char, it burnt my heart and soul, girl!” roar Austin dramatically as I tried to suppress my laughter but failed eventually.
My mind drifted back to one such event 14 years ago. Karel, Bonnie, Austin and I were having a small barbeque party at the backyard of Bonnie home. Jaime at that time was too busy with his band and, of course, busying spending quality time with Leticia Sanchez. Anyway back to the barbeque party, it was my turn to cook the raw food. My experience with food at that time was way beyond par. Let just said that every food that I tried to cook or bake, the result will be ultimately a failure. So it was no genius that I literally burnt the rib-eye that had been a gift for us to enjoy our last week together, before sitting for our end-year examination. For me, it was my last get-together with my 4 closest friends, especially Bonnie who had died 5 years later in a car accident.
Bonnie is not the same person who had been working at my restaurant as the head chef, back in Madrid though.
Austin was at lost of words of how disappointed he was, seeing the charred rib-eye. But it was funny the way he flipping around as to vent his anger. The rest of us girls just stood watching him and laughed. Eventually Bonnie father had bought us more meat to barbeque it and I was ban from walking near the pit. Well, the only thing left for me to do was to enjoy eating the cooked food and spending chatting with the girls.
“Didn’t you already showed me that and obviously, I did know how to barbeque meat, Austin,” I said with a tinge of laughter still in my voice.
“Well, something tells me that you have yet to master that skill, Marcy. Hmmm...,” said Austin suspiciously. “Anyway just come over here and bring lover boy too, alright? Can’t wait to introduce you to my Diana. She’s a fan of you Chef Marcela Torres.”
I’m not really sure the title ‘Lover boy’ is appropriate for Jaime. Yes, we did finally knows all the hidden love that we have kept a secret for such long time and he seems to want more in our reunion which I’m not really ready to commit. Seriously in my condition, I should not lead him on to any false hope of be together. It seems to be unfair for him and very mean for me.
My head felt hurt suddenly and Austin, who seems oblivious to the searing pain in my head, keeps on chatting through the phone. “I already started on cooking few dishes now in the kitchen. God Marcy just comes over here and tastes my cooking skill. You know, just maybe you will want to consider hiring me as a chef in your restaurant back in Madrid.”
I force myself to drag out a soft reply to him, “Sure.”
“Ok. We will be expecting the 2 of you at my place...around 7pm. Alright?” I could not bring myself to refuse him from the sound of joyful in his voice. We hung up the phones and I make my way to the white couch in my sparse living room. My thoughts are reeling with decision of who to bring with me to the dinner. I don’t feel right of asking Jaime to come with me. I don’t want anyone to think there is anything more than us as old friend been reunited after 14 years separation. I don’t want them to get the wrong idea. Even I still undecided of our relationship status.
I’m sure Austin will be disappointed with me if I bring someone else beside Jaime during dinner tonight, but then again, he will understand me, maybe. The only other person that I have befriended during my stay here is Oliver Sykes and I’m not sure if he will want to come with me either.
I guess I could try.
Quickly I dialled his numbers from my memory and after 2 rings, I heard someone answer my call and it is Oliver. “Hello?”
I tried to sound cheery and not sure the reason why. It felt that I own him an explanation on something. “Hi Oli, it’s me Marcela Torres. Remember me?”
A pause but not for too long although I could dictate a certain annoyance in his voice, “Yeeeah, of course I remember you. What is it? Kind of busy right now...”
“Oh I’m sorry to disturb you-“
“Well, make it quick then. What do you want?” he asked. His voice is so cold and I’m not sure why.
“I thought to ask you out for dinner tonight. But if you are busy-“
“Ok then, I’ll pick you up at your house. Let say a quarter to six, sound good to you?” his replied is so unexpected but I could just agree with his suggestion, “Fine with me.”
Click.
After I have finished up with my simple make-up, I pull out the drawer of my dresser, seeing the bottle of my favourite perfume, Chanel No.5, and a sudden urge to feel sexy well maybe trying to impress my dinner partner, I spray a swish of the aromatic perfume all over my body. Definitely Oliver had that effect on me.
Austin has yet to be informing that I will be bringing Oliver instead of Jaime. Not even Oliver also knows that we will be having dinner with Austin. But I could not be bother over small trivial things like that. To me, it is the matter of being comfortable and until recently I felt comfortable with Oliver. Well, maybe because Oliver seems to understand my suffering rather than Jaime, who I know that, I’ve been unfair to him for not telling the truth of my receding health condition. Even Austin did not know my illness and I hope Oliver will not be telling him either.
I need to have that conversation with the Brit dude. Sigh.
Anyway, after grabbing my black leather Prada purse, I go straight down to the front door of my house as to wait for the arrival of Oliver. I did not need to wait for long because as I reached the bottom step of the staircase, I heard a car honk and I just know that must be Oliver.
I walk out to the awaiting car, after key-in the security code to lock my front door. I watch the man behind the wheel. A small smile playing on his handsome face as he watch me walking towards his car, never taking his eyes off me even when I finally get in at the passenger side of the car.
“You look so magnificently beautiful, pretty lady.”
I blushed hearing his sweet comment. Well I did admit that I am wearing something, intended or not, but to impress him. Suddenly I wanted to feel like a princess and someone to rain me with praises for the effort that I’ve taken to make myself beautiful. It is not every day that I even have the desire to wear anything appropriate since the death of my son and, well I know of my fatal illness. I’ve just give up the hope for such little things.
“You should always be as this beautiful always.”
Laughing out loud after hearing such a cheesy lines come out from a guy like him, I look over to his still dreamy face. With a smile, I whisper, “Stop it Oli with all the praises. Just don’t ruin the first praise, please.”
Nodding his head, he turns to look ahead the road as he switch on the car ignition, “Ok I will stop now. But then, where are we heading to for dinner?”
Letting go my breath which I did not know that I am holding on, I said,” Austin invited us over to his house for dinner. He wanted to show me the exact right way to barbeque a Rib eye.”
The car started to move smoothly out from my neighbourhood and heading to the road to Austin house. “I’m sure ‘us’ does not mean you and me, am I right to say that?” say Oliver with his thick accent.
I look at him with my best cutie smile, “That ‘us’ referring to Jaime and me. But...” I let the sentence died down. There is a part of me that urge me it is ok for me to share my worries with Oliver, even though we have just met a few weeks ago. But then again, I am just burden him with my problem which truly unfair and selfish of me.
I feel Oliver eyes on me before he said, “It’s ok. I won’t push you for an answer. It is not my place to question you. Well, I am hungry and getting hungrier when I heard Carlile will be cooking us some meaty Rib eye. Damn that must be bloody delicious!!”
One of the many reasons that I feel so comfortable with Oliver, I know he won’t force me out if I am not willing to confess. But again, I am selfish on my part. Should I remain selfish with him? Afterall I will not be living that longer either. Maybe I should just be that.
“Self proclaim by him that he is the expert in cooking the most perfect rib-eye,” I said with a light laughter in my voice. “Listen, Oliver...”
A quick glance to me, I saw his questioning look before he replied me with a barely to whisper, “Yes?”
“Please do not tell Austin about-“
“About meeting you at the hospital and fainting?” He asked me suspiciously while interrupting my saying. I just nodded to him. “I won’t tell him if you do not want me to,” he replied me softly. There is definitely sadness in his voice but why? I am the one who is suffering here not him or anyone else.
I turn to look out the car window, barely a whisper I said, “Thanks for understanding me.”
Within 10 minutes drive from my house, we have reached Austin house. When he open the door for us, clearly he look confuse seeing Oliver standing beside me but he quickly cast it aside and greeted Oliver like an old friend, “Come on in Oliver. I am surprise to be seeing you here, visiting my humble home compare to the castle that you lived in back in London.”
Glancing at the spacious living room, Oliver replies with a tinge of laughter in his voice, “Oh you so full of morons Carlile. You are the one who is living in a castle here. My place is nothing better than your home here, mate.”
“You are fucking kidding me Sykes. Come on follow me here. I’ll take you to my special barbeque pit where there is a table full of delicious and properly cook meat for you to enjoy with,” prided Austin as he ushered both of us to the located dinner spot. I walk closely behind Oliver. I’m not sure for reasons of my behaviour but somehow I felt protected when I’m near him. I know, if given a chance to be alone with Austin, he will start to thoroughly question me of where is Jaime.
Then suddenly Austin stop walking that makes Oliver to stop walking and I bump against the back of Oliver body. I peek from behind Oliver and look at Austin curiously. Austin had this happy look on his face and he seems ecstatic too. Then I remember that Austin is supposed to introduce me his new girlfriend, but glancing around the house, I could not see anyone beside him.
“I know you are looking for Violet, Marcela,” said the eager boy Austin. He slips in his hands into the back pocket of his jean that clearly shows his nervousness. I just know him so well. Oliver just looks curiously at him with his trademark smile as if to reassure the nervous man.
To make him at ease, I gently patted his arm as I smiled at him, “So where is she then?”
“She’ll be here. She is just going to the grocery store to get us more brew,” said Austin as he look out from the window on his right that directly overlook his driveway. “She should be back any time soon now.”
“Well you should call me to get the brew on my way here.”
“We have been a very bad guest because we did not bring a gift for the house owner, “Oliver chirped on. “In London, it is a must for the house guest to give out gift to the host and hostess.”
“Nah...I don’t want to trouble you. Come on let’s get started with the party now.” He waved his hand again to us as to follow him to the back yard. We followed him silently.
Both Austin and Oliver are busy grilling the meat over the barbeque pit, while I help out laying the plates on the tables. Actually there are nothing much to be done as I could see that Violet had done most of the work. Once in a while I tried to look out the driveway for any sign of Violet, but after being in Austin house for almost 30 minutes now, she is yet to appear.
The night air is wharfing with the delicious smell of the cooked food that comes from the barbeque pit. The 2 men seem to get along very well. They laughed and joke around happily, while they grilled the food. Once in a while I heard the 2 of them singing songs to the tune out of the radio. And I just enjoyed the night mesmerizing the night breeze.

Meanwhile over the barbeque grill, as Oliver glance at the sitting Marcela, he averted his eyes again back to the food before nudge Austin at his side. The man turns to him curiously. “How Marcela is likes in the high school?” asked Oliver.
Averting his eyes over to the say woman, Austin said of what he knows best of his friend of 14 years, “She is a sweet girl who is force to live distance away from her old man and older brother. I don’t think it was that pleasant back home for her. I heard from my late girlfriend and Karel, that she was mistreated by her step sisters. She was the happiest when she was with us.”
“Karel is?”
Without looking up from his task of turning the cooked meat, he continues to say, “Her cousin from her mother side. I believed she joined Marcela to live in Madrid after she graduated from UCLA. And I think she is handling Marcela restaurant business now.”
“Why did she left? Something happen between her and Jaime?” he could not stop himself to ask that question. Not that he is jealous but the need to know is overwhelming him and the questions had been playing on his mind lately.
Again, he did not look away from his cooking, “Maybe. But I know for sure on the night of the prom, Jaime was preparing something special for her. It just felt that it was a waste of not knowing what the surprise that he had installed for her was. Damn.”
Oliver detects the tone of regret from Austin voice. But before he could asked more, Austin continues to say, “She just gone from that day onwards until I’ve met her 2 years ago and now, she had moved back home here again.”
“She didn’t say much to you of why she comes back?” Oliver asked when he knows the exact answer to that question. He so understand now. Marcela has come back to live out her life until the end in a hometown where she met her first love. That is for sure. For what Oliver knows whether she knows that Jaime is still living at the same town after 14 years, that fact remains a mystery.
“Maybe to pick up the pieces that she left 14 years ago, “ smirked Austin as he remember something funny. “You know, I thought it will be difficult for her but seeing how crazy in love Jaime is with her, I don’t think it will be no problem for them to be together like at LAST!!”
Oliver just smiled seeing Austin enthusiasm but he knows better. Jaime and Marcela will never be together, because yet again Marcela will leave him in the lurch. Glancing over to where Marcela is seated, she is watching them and when their eyes met, Oliver could just shake his head overwhelm with the situation that he deliberately gotten himself in.
From the distance, and he guess Austin driveway, he heard laughter from a group of people wharfing in. It must be Violet who just returns from the grocery store. “I got this going mate,” he assures Austin and pushes him over to the incoming people. He has his body turn away from the rest of them.
But when he heard, “Jaime? What are you doing here?” Oliver quickly turns to the crowd and saw a very shocking Marcela facing a certain piss off Jaime.
“Oh bloody Mary...”
