Stolen Moments
Everyone Needs One, Even You
Knock.
Knock.
“Fuck.”
Bang.
“Vic, wake the hell up.”
Vic tried to ignore his brothers pestering, but the younger Fuentes refused to give in to his silent demands. Mike’s hand shot forward into his head, slamming it against the wall of his bunk.
“I said wake the hell up, man. I have to talk to you.”
Vic groaned and shot out at his brother, “Don’t hit me again, and go away.”
“No, I need to talk to you. It’s about Jaime,” Mike insisted. Vic shot up, banging his head roughly on the roof of his small bed.
“What do you mean it’s about Jaime?” he asked, panic rolling through his mind.
“Get up and I’ll tell you,” Mike replied, walking away from his brother. Vic didn’t debate long before rolling out of sleep for good and following the drummer to the back of the bus.
“Where’s Tony..?” Vic asked softly, adding in 'and Jaime' in his mind. The bus was empty, and it was strange to him.
“He’s with Jaime, of course,” Mike stated matter-of-factly, as if it was something Vic should have known already. “Speaking of Jaime…” he rounded on his brother, “What’s going on between you two?”
“What do you mean?” Vic shot back quickly, shocked by the question. It wasn’t what he expected; what he expected was bad news, but this was worse.
“You know exactly what I mean. The way you two have been acting recently. What’s up with it?”
“I don’t know what you mean, Mikey. Honest.”
“Cut the shit, Vic. I’m your brother, man, don’t lie to me. I deserve to know.”
“Mike, I promise, there’s nothing, and, even if there was, it wouldn’t be your business. Jaime is my best friend, dude. You know that. That’s all there is to it.”
“Are you sure? Secrets aren’t good for the band, man.”
“I’m positive. There is absolutely nothing ‘secret’ going on between me and Jaime. I swear,” he assured, but the look on his brothers face scared him. Mike was silent, gazing over Vic’s shoulder absently. Vic glanced back, wondering what he was missing, and finding Tony and Jaime at the threshold of the bus. He couldn’t help but notice how stony Jaime looked and the way Tony watched him as if he expected something.
“Is he okay?” Mike spoke up first, his eyes darting between Tony and Jaime. Tony shook his head slightly and Mike said, “Did he te-“
“No. He got in a fight,” Tony cut in. Vic’s eyes widdened slightly at the mention of a fight, and he began to assess Jaime for visible injuries. “He won, too. I’d say he needs…a hug, though,” the guitarist opted, testing the waters to see what Vic would do.
“Everyone needs a hug,” Vic mumbled, glancing back at his brother who immediately laughed at him.
“Group hug in Jaime’s honor?” Mike offered, slinging his arm around Vic and dragging him to the other half of Pierce the Veil.
“To Jaime,” Tony said, linking his arm over Vic’s other shoulder so that the three of them were all facing the dedication of the hug. Jaime smiled slightly, and Vic noticed how his lips upturned only slightly in their smirk.
“To Jaime!” Vic agree’d, stepping forward to wrap his arms around his best friend. Mike and Tony followed suit, wrapping their arms tightly around the two boys. Vic wondered if Mike would be this nice towards them if he knew what they were hiding. Jaime, as if reading Vic’s mind, wrapped his arms tighter around Vic’s torso. 'This is what home feels like,' Vic thought to himself as the hug broke apart, 'and this is what I don’t want to mess up.'
