Trying to Hold It All Together

I'm getting sick and tired of the smile that I fake every day

The California sun stretched across the never-ending sky leaving gorgeous trails of pinks, purples, and orange behind. Sunsets were another sign that marked a brand new day; one more chance to make today better than yesterday. Some people would take that and use it as an indication to cherish even more time they were allowed on Earth by simply being able to open their eyes each and every day.

Jaime on the other hand was the complete opposite. His voice dragged out in a low grown once his ears caught the sound if the bedside alarm clock. Slowly, his thin and sluggish fingers found their way on top of the system, swiftly shutting it off. Work had never been one of Jaime's favorite things to do. Especially not since the disbanding of the group which he called his second home.

Having to spend the majority of his days working nine to five wasn't his ideal of fun or joy. He could barely even manage to stay awake when customers took a gradual time ordering. Jaime hated every single bit of working at the small diner but it was the only thing he had to occupy his mind from day to day.

His heart longed to be out on the open road once more, to be able to stare back at the faces of hundreds, sometimes thousands almost on a daily basis. At work, Jaime's fingers itched to pick up his bass and strum a few notes to "The Boy Who Could Fly"; one of his favorite songs to perform live. Instead of busing tables or jotting down orders, Jaime yearned for the happiness fans gave him each time they would meet at a show. Nothing was working out for him and a few of his coworkers noticed every time he arrived.

"I'll be home soon Jessica," He kissed his girlfriend's cheek. Her short, disheveled black hair was moved out of her face giving Jaime to the opportunity to gaze into her glistening orbs. Makeup or not, she was always beautiful to him.

With one last kiss, Jaime ushered his girlfriend a "Good morning," before pulling the covers back over her and heading off to work. If he could just get through another miserable day then everything would be fine. Fine: a simple word he attempted to constantly remind himself that he was even though he clearly wasn't. It was something Jaime would have to settle on no matter how much he dreaded his new lifestyle; one he felt that didn't suit him.

"One more song," the crowd all chimed together. From the beginning of the show to the wild end, the show had been wild despite what was actually going on behind the scenes. Jaime's fingers ran themselves between his sweaty locks before messing his hair up even more.

Vic passed a glance to him and noticed Jaime's growing grin. Vic then turned to look back at his brother who was smiling; his drumstick filled hands lit up with eagerness. Jaime could tell Vic wanted to signal to Tony but after the recent events no one in the band knew exactly what to say to him. After all he was leaving the band and both Jaime and Mike were still upset about the uncanny decision.

Jaime took a quick swig of the refreshing water before placing it down and readjusting his bass. Vic faced his band once more and mouthed, "Currents Convulsive," and hurriedly turned back to face the sea of screaming fans.

Jaime got his fingertips ready and smiled to the people before him as Vic opened his mouth.

"Here's the deal," Vic started. "Instead of one more song," He paused for a few seconds to make sure everyone heard correctly, "We'll give you two."

Immediately, eyes lit up at his words and the crowd went wild. Screams and shouts could be heard all over the venue. It was a beautiful and amazing sight to see; one forever captured and never forgotten in Jaime's mind.

"But here's the other part of the deal," Vic got the crowd to quiet down a bit, "before we play our next song we need to make sure that all of your wonderful people are awake because we're going to need you guys to be extremely energetic and get those feet moving." Vic then took his microphone off the stand are pulled it closer to his lips, "I said are you guys awake out there?" He asked, now pointing the microphone towards the crowd.

People screamed and yelled as loud as they could to notify the band that they were ready for the last of tonight's crazy events to finally take place. A smile formed on every member's lips at that moment, even Jaime noticed Tony's small smirk at the crowd. He still didn't understand why he could ever want to give up the band when moments like this still exist.

Vic laughed at the feedback as he reattached the microphone to its stand, "Well I guess you're all ready. We haven't played this song in a long time since Jaime and Tony joined the band and I'm honestly thankful that they did in the first. We wouldn't be here without you both."
Jaime quickly formed a heart with his hands and shot it at Vic who laughed again before talking back into the microphone.

"This one's Currents Convulsive."

Both Tony's and Vic's fingers quickly started strumming cords right away followed by the beat of Mike's rapid movements as well as Jaime's. Vic's voice carried out perfectly into the crowd as multiple people sung along to the words of the song; one that they rarely played anymore. It didn't take long for the chorus to kick in and send Jaime's adrenaline straight through the roof. Mike banged his drums with intensity as it flowed throughout his veins.

The energetic beat caused Jaime's body to run, spin, and jump all over the stage. Shows like this gave his life meaning; it was all he truly knew. Shows were basically a second home to him and the people who showed up each and every night. He was sincerely grateful for everyone who showed up whether it be to one show or ten; each one meant so much to him.

"I like your starry eyes. They yell, "Surprise, surprise!" I'm in love, but not for long," He mouthed each word towards the people at the barricade while Vic continued to sing. Jaime's fingers slipped a girl whose hair was a mess from jumping up and down and voice most likely strained from singing along the entire night one of his picks.

Even under the colorful lights, he could still make out various incisions scattered across her left arm. He mouthed an "I'm glad you're alive" her way before going back to throw out a few more picks into the crowd.

The song neared to an end causing the crowd to cry out from amusement again. Jaime sat down on the edge of the stage, still gleaming happily at all of the fans. They had gotten the band this far and Jaime always went out of his way to thank them from the bottom of his heart.

"That ladies and gentlemen was the reason why we love playing for all you beautiful people every single night. You are what keep us four all going as a band." Vic confessed the crowd making them shout some more. "This last song is one I hold closely to my heart. Anyone know of a little thing I'd like to call She Sings In the Morning'?"

The majority before the boys nodded while most continue to scream and reply with "yes's". Vic glanced over the sea of people one last time. "When we start the beginning of this song I want you all to clap at a steady pace with me until it kicks in. That's when I want you to go as wild as you can."

Not before long, the intro finally kicked in and the crowd followed Vic's claps. Hell, even Jaime moved along with the crowd until Vic started singing his amazing lyrics. He dropped his hands as they found their way back onto his bass; quickly moving across the instrument. His feet kicked up as he jumped several times in a circle; his energy increasing with each movement.

That's when his paced slowed down a bit and he eyed a small part in the crowd. His tongue moved quickly across his lips before he felt his body leap out and into the sea of people. Hands felt him from under as he found himself moving and still managing to play as he crowd surfed for the first in a long time. This was just was the doctor had ordered.

Before he knew it, his body was being pushed back towards the stage. A mental sigh was let out inside his head as the last song of the night came to an end as well as the show he so dearly didn't want to end but Jaime took notice to one thing as his feet were planted firmly back on the large stage.

Tony was the first one to rush off passed the crew and techs. It was like he couldn't stand to be on stage anymore; like it pained him. Jaime just stood there watching where Tony just was worried. His best friend was turning into a whole other person right before his very own eyes.

"If I were you, I'd be hurrying up and busing table 12 right now," Jaime's co-worker, Sabrina whispered into his ear. "You know how much boss hates it when one of his workers slacks off."

Jaime scoffed at the girl next to him. If anything, it would be the one co-worker he despised the most to snap him out of his memory. "Well I'm surprised he's not yelling at you then again it's clear to everyone that you're sleeping with the boss."

The girl was taken back at his comment but it was the exact thing to get her to storm off and away from him. Jaime took notice as some of his other co-workers laughed at the scene. Over the few weeks of working at the diner, he made friends with some of the workers and tried his best to avoid other ones like Sabrina. So far it still had been hell no matter what. He grabbed his bucket and rag and began clearing off the disgusting table near the window. After spraying the table, he started to wipe down the table; making it seem as if no one had ate at the table all day. It wasn't until he glanced back up at his work when he caught his breath.

Tony walked passed the window, a white hoodie shielding him as well as the tattoos he loved to show off from time to time. For a split second, their eyes caught one another's before Tony sped up his pace.

It was the first in months that Jaime had seen his best friend. The last time they had spoken to one another was when Tony confided in him; something Jaime was hesitant to even believe at first. He was able to keep his secret but the large black bags underneath Tony's eyes as well as his whole new image worried Jaime to pieces.

There were so many things Jaime wanted to do, so many things he wanted to run up to Tony and ask him. Instead, he simply stayed inside the diner and continued working and hoping his shift would end any minute now.

No longer did he felt as if he knew Tony. His best friend was long gone and in his place was a stranger he never recognized.
