Trying to Hold It All Together

Cold sweat, goosebumps

"How is she doing?" Tony's voice choked out, his hand gripping the cellular phone and pressing it closer to his ear. Anxiousness filled his stomach while his breathing continued to quicken with his heartbeat. He could hear music playing softly on the other side of the phone as he waited for a response.

This marked the fifth time in two weeks he had made a special call. After a mishap at work, stress built upon him ever since he arrived home. The fact that there was no beer in the refrigerator made his situation 10x worse than before. He needed to calm his nerves and fast. All Tony wanted was to hear the same soothing voice he loved dearly.

"You know you're not supposed to be doing this?" A voice finally replied. Another sigh escaped Tony's lips at the woman's words; his fingers running through his disheveled locks.

"I understand," He explained, "But I really need this right now. At least give me an update." The sound of a woman exhaling from the other side of the phone left his heart racing. With each long pause of silence that occurred several worries inside his mind followed right behind. To be stripped of everything was one thing but to be denied of talking to the one he loved was another.

Tony silently hoped he was in luck as he heard the woman began to speak up once more.

"You have to stop doing this Tony," she cried into the phone, "But..." The way her voice trailed on the last word made him eager to no end.

"But what?" Now he was on the edge of his seat. Butterflies floated inside him while goosebumps found their way onto his arms along with multiple hairs beginning to rise on the back of his neck.

The woman didn't finish her sentence but began a whole new one instead. This caught the man off guard. "She's sleeping right now," She announced.

A small "oh," was the only thing Tony could make out.

"She's looking more and more like her everyday Tony," The woman stressed. Her words sent more chills down his spine. A year had passed since the last time he saw the sunshine of his life: his daughter. The more he thought about his newly three year old, the more his heart broke into two.

Life hadn't been the same without her but she was in a better place now. He wouldn't have been able to look at her in the eyes her if she had seen the state he was currently in.

"Can you make sure to tell Emily I love her when she does wake up?"

"I can do that," She replied back. Before Tony could press end up the phone he was abruptly stopped by the sound of the woman's voice calling for him.

"Yes mom?" He asked.

"I love you Tony and you know that. Please do anything stupid."

"I won't." Those were the last two words he said before hanging up. Tony loved his mom dearly, he really did but in his mind he knew that some promises just couldn't be kept.
