Saint Heart

Bets

I woke up at noon the next day and went downstairs to my brother passed out on the couch. Mike was sleeping on the floor wrapped up in a blanket just a few feet away. The TV was on, playing some repetitive start menu screen to the video game they must of found among my DVD’s. Both their shirts laid in a heap on the carpet. I walked quietly into the kitchen and begun looking for breakfast foods.

I was pulling a bag of bagels out of one of the cabinets when I heard someone shuffle into the room behind me. Turning around, I saw my brother walking to one of the seats at the dining table while he pulled up his plaid pajama pants hanging lose around his waist.

“Where’s everyone else?”

“Jaime said he didn’t want to stay here, so Vic drove him back to the bus and probably stayed there with him.”

“So you don’t have a car until they come back?”

“Nope…. Guess you’re stuck with me for a while.” He shot me a wide smile, full of energy for someone who just woke up.

I took the spot opposite him with a glass of orange juice. “Well, you can help yourself while you’re here.” I gestured to the fridge and he thanked me.

“Mike’s actually a pretty good cook…. Don’t tell him I told you that. He’ll hurt me.”

I laughed as I cupped my glass. “I won’t tell. Promise.”

Then, as if on queue, Mike stumbled into the kitchen, hair messy and a bit tangled. He ran his fingers through it as if me looking at him made him a bit self conscious. “‘Morning,” he said as he came over and sat down at the short end between Tony and I.

We both greeted him and fell silent again. After a few seconds, Mike spoke up.

“Let’s go get breakfast,” he said, still sounding a bit sleepy. “I’m starving.”

I agree, since it doesn't seem like he's up to cooking and I don't feel like doing it myself since my own specialties are bagels and cereal. I let them look at the pamphlets while I go upstairs to quickly shower and change out of my pajamas. By the time I’m coming down the short case of stairs again, they've decided and changed back into their jeans and t-shirts from yesterday.

“Do you want to stop and get clean clothes first?” I asked as we walked out into my car. I hadn't realized how hungry I’d become until my stomach growled loudly as we climbed in.

“Sure,” Tony agreed from the passenger's seat. He gave me directions on how to get them back to their bus. Vic text him the night before and told him that they got a hotel for the night to save them from sleeping in the bunks if they didn't have to. I pulled into the parking lot of a sort of expensive looking hotel within about fifteen minutes, going passed the empty school driveway since it was Saturday.

We all got out of the car and head into the hotel where we’re greeted by a host. Mike tells the women behind the front desk who it is we’re looking for, and she tells us that Jaime and Vic are staying in room 435. We head up, taking an elevator at the beginning of the hall to our right.

Jaime answers the door, his eyes lingering on me for a moment before stepping aside and letting the three of us in. “Why are you guys here?”

“So glad to see you too,” I muttered under my breath.

“We’re just going to grab some clothes before getting some breakfast," Tony said before Jaime has a chance to say anything else.

“I want to come!” Vic said from the bed. He was laying on his stomach with a pillow beneath him, watching something on the TV that didn't seem that interesting to me.

“Sure, get dressed and let’s go,” Mike said. He pulled his suitcase up onto the foot of the bed and dug through for clothes. Tony went into the bathroom and I heard the shower start up. He paused for a moment and looked at Jaime, "are you coming, bigshot?"

Jaime gave him dirty look before nodding.

I learned pretty quickly that four guys can take just as long to get ready as any other girl I knew. It was almost three hours later before I was driving all five of us to IHOP. Thankfully, not many people go to IHOP at 3:30 in the afternoon, so we were quickly seated in a booth and given drinks shortly after.

“Can I have two blueberry pancakes and a chocolate chip one?” I asked her, and then handed her my folded up menu.

She took it down in her notebook and then turned to Jaime, who was sitting opposite me.

“Are you really going to eat three pancakes?” he asked me, ignoring the waitress.

I nodded. “I’m so hungry. You guys took longer than my girl friends to get ready.”

He scoffed. “Challenge accepted. I’ll have four, please," he added, turning back to her. "Two chocolate and two blueberry.”

Vic rolled his eyes and the waitress took the other orders. After she walked away, Jaime swallowed the gulp of his orange juice he had taken, his eyes on me.

"I don't think you know what you're getting yourself into."

I gave him a look before asking, "What are you talking about?"

“Here we go….” Vic mumbled under his breath.

"Who can eat more pancakes," Jaime told me as if it was obvious.

It only took about ten minutes for her to come back with Jaime and I’s meals. Mike and Vic’s took a few minutes longer since they ordered omelets, sausage and a side or toast.

“Ready?” Jaime picked his fork up off his long, white napkin.

“If anyone gets sick-” Mike intervened, but Jaime interrupted him.

“1, 2, 3!”

And before I knew it, I was hurriedly shoveling pancake bites into my mouth without pausing to wipe the syrup from dribbling down my lips. Even though the challenge was to eat more, the pressure of everyone at the table watching made me anxious. Once they got their food, they turned away from us.

I finish half of the chocolate chip one and then move on to the one with blueberries. I sneaked a glance across the table at the competition, and my mouth dropped when I saw Jaime had already devoured two of his pancakes. I wanted to take a sip of my nearly full iced coffee, but instead I pushed myself to take bigger mouthfuls.

“Come on, Christina!” Vic cheered me on in between bites of his own.

Jaime made a protesting sound through the massive amount of pancake in his mouth. Mike, Tony and Vic laughed. I began to cut through another piece with my fork when Jaime slammed fists down on the table and scared me, causing me to jump.

“VICTORY!”

Mike patted my back as I finished chewing my mouthful of failed strategy and swallowed.

“Nope,” I said, remembering the original rules of the game which Jaime obviously must have forgotten.

“Nope, I won.”

“Actually, you said you’d eat more than me, not eat them faster.”

Jaime repeated what I said in a condescending voice. I caught the waitress just as she passed our table, ignoring his remarks.

“Excuse me! Can I have two more blueberry please?”

She looked down at my plate, which still held half a pancake, with a confused look. “Would you like to finish that our should I just toss it?”

“She’s going to finish it,” Jaime intervened for me.

When I gave him a confused look, he said, “I’m two ahead,” with a confident shrug. The waitress nodded and walked away. “I mean, we could just call it quits and I win.”

"I told you," Mike said as I carefully climbed onto the sofa in my living room. Jaime eagerly took up the one on the wall adjacent to mine.

"Winning was worth it," I said with a smile despite how I felt like I could throw up at any moment.

"I demand a rematch," Jaime moaned from where he lay.

"Why, losing once wasn't good enough?"

Jaime began to say something but was interrupted by Tony.

"Um, you're off for the summer, right?"

I opened my resting eyes and looked at my brother. "Yeah, and I plan on taking full advantage of that. Why?"

He was silent for a second or two before going on. "Well, you should stay with us."
