So keep in happiness

The next morning, I had woken up with a ray of sunlight heating my face and sprawled in the big bed I had made last night. It was one of the most lovely moments I'd had recently. I was calm and relaxed, and I didn't have to worry about going to school early in the morning, or dread coming back home to a grumpy, drunken mother.
I took a moment to think about how the people back at home would be taking my "disappearance". My mum most certainly wouldn't care, or would be too drunk to notice I was gone. But something inside of me told me to think otherwise, to think better of her and to think that she'd be worrying about me and looking for her only child. However, I didn't want her to look for me. I wouldn't go back to her, not even in a million years, because my mother only made my life miserable and practically a living hell.
I still couldn't believe that my crazy plan had turned out so well and that, for once in my life, I seemed to be being so lucky. It was unbelievable how, in a matter of a day, I was living on the other side of the world, away from everything and everyone I knew. Just like I always wanted.
With a big smile on my face, I walked around the small apartment and found myself walking absentmindedly towards the big window that opened to the beach. The window sheets opened at the slightest push and a cool gush of wind entered the room, bringing in the smell of salt and sand. I guessed it was early in the morning, because the sun was rising slowly and the temperature was still cool; the sea was grumpy that morning, and the waves just the perfect high, which gave me an idea.
I rushed to my new room and yanked the suitcase open, looking around for the big black lump I was looking for. When I finally found it, I took it in my hands and undid the zipper, revealing my camera, which I held a lot of dear for. I threw the strap over my head and hurried towards the window again, supporting myself on the comfy window seat. Looking through the objective of the camera, I turned the focus with light fingers, being extremely careful and precise, trying to obtain the best image I possibly could. I took a few shots of the wild sea before something caught my eye. Well, more like someone.
It was Vic. He was running out of the sea wearing a neoprene wetsuit, a surfboard under his arm. His hair was soaking wet and sticking in odd directions, but he looked really hot like that. And... happy. Happy and free.
Vic continued walking out of the beach and onto the promenade. There, he leaned the surfboard on a streetlight and started changing out of the wetsuit and into some clothes he fished out of a duffel bag. I decided I'd give him a little privacy from my hiding spot to get changed. Meanwhile, I continued taking photos of the delightful landscape in front of me. I loved the mixture of the city and the beach, it was just perfect.
I was dragged out of my photo-taking frenzy by a familiar voice from below.
"Hey! Thalia! Down here!" I looked down and saw Vic looking up at me, a big grin on his face. Once our eyes connected, he waved at me with the hand that wasn't holding his surfboard. I waved and smiled back at him.
"Hey! Morning!" I said in loud voice so he could hear from his spot on the street below. He changed the surfboard from his right to his left hand.
"Morning! Wanna have breakfast?" He asked out of a sudden, and I couldn't help but crack a smile at his cuteness and nod almost instantly. "Go on, sleeping beauty! Get dressed, I'll wait right here!" He yelled, chuckling lightly. I yelled back an "be there soon" and dashed to my room to get dressed. It was still cool, so I chose a pair of skinny jeans, a light blue tank top and a black sweater. Before leaving, I stepped into my Vans, ruffled a bit my long, wavy dark brown hair and left to meet Vic downstairs.
When I reached the street, there he was, standing in all his sporty glory. The moment he saw me, he jogged over to where I was, flashing the smile I was starting to suspect never left his face.
'Morning!' He chirped happily.
'Morning! Hey, I didn't know you surfed!' I said, pointing at the big surfboard leaning on the streetlight. He shrugged and gave me a smirk.
'I didn't know you were a photographer either, so...' Vic answered, pointing at the window I was at before, and I laughed softly.
'That's because I'm not a one.' He was about to answer back but was cut off by his stomach rumbling loudly. He blushed fiercely and I laughed again, placing a hand on his shoulder to show him it was fine. 'Enough talk now, let's feed that monster you've got in your tummy.'
'Food! Follow me, I know the best pancake place ever.' Vic commanded with a big smirk plastered onto his face. I liked that about him, he was always happy and smiley. It was a fresh change for once in life. 'You coming? It's that, or I'm eating all the pancakes!'
I guessed I zoned out, because Vic was a few steps ahead, his arm outstretched in my direction. I ran and caught up with him in no time. We walked calmly to a small café with a wooden roof. It looked cozy and comfy inside, perfect for an early beach-morning breakfast. Vic guided me inside and we sat on a table next to a big window. Short after, a boy with gauges and hair in a mawhawk came over with a notepad on one hand and a pen on the other. He looked at Vic with a big, and a bit mischievous, smile.
'Why, hi there Vic! I see you're not alone in this beautiful June morning.' The boy with the gauges looked at Vic teasingly and then at me, winking. I flashed him an amused smile when I saw how uncomfortable Vic looked in this whole situation.
'No, Tony, I'm obviously not alone. Thalia, this is Tony, an old friend of mine and a big dickhead.' Vic said, more like growled, and both me and the Tony guy laughed. I stuck out my hand to shake Tony's, but he leaned over and gave me a bear hug. I hugged him back awkwardly and chuckled when he pulled away. 'Sorry, I'm a hugger!'
'Tony, um, could you bring two plates of pancakes, please?' Vic asked his friend. There was something in his tone I couldn't quite put my finger on, a weird something in his voice.
'Of course! Be right back.' Tony answered, writing the order on his notepad. He flashed me a smile before he turned to get the comand. As he left, I heard him mutter something to himself. 'Jealous bastard.'
I didn't quite understand why he said it, so I simply shrugged it off and gazed at the beach outside. Something about yesterday popped into my head. 'Vic, about the flat, you never told me how much the rent was.'
'Oh yeah, um, my parents left it set on five hundred, but I lowered it two hundred. If it's too expensive, then we can maybe...'
'Oh, no no, it's perfect.' I rushed over my words, tripping over them. Vic chuckled softly and gave me one of his characteristic smiles. 'I know I said before, but thank you, Vic.'
'It's nothing, silly. And it's nice to have someone as lovely as my neighbour.'
I blushed and hid my face behind my hair.
'You're cute when you blush, don't hide your face.' Vic said softly, and I could feel his eyes on my face, only making me blush even more. I smiled a little, but didn't dare look up until a very bubbly Tony arrived with two plates of pancakes.
'Pancakes for the lovebirds!' Tony exclaimed happily, putting one
plate stuffed with pancakes in front of each other. Vic punched Tony on the arm not-so-playfully and glared at his friend, who laughed it off. 'Okay, okay, sorry I was just joking. Enjoy breakfast, guys.' And with that, he strolled away, muttering things to himself.
I dared to look at Vic to find him already looking at me, a small and unusually shy smile playing on his lips.
We ate in a comfortable silence, once in a while tossing a question or a joke that'd make the other laugh or blush. Once we were done, though, we walked back to his - now our- building and into his flat to sign the papers. Vic handed me a contract that I had to sign. While I read it over, he talked again. 'Thalia, um, I'll need your ID, you know, just some burocracy.'
'Sure. Here you go.' I said, fishing it out of my wallet and handing it to him. He frowned but proceeded to write down the information nevertheless. A minute later, he handed it back to me.
'You know, Thalia? I know how to recognize a fake ID... But dont worry, you're safe here from whatever you're running from.' Vic said in a warm, comforting voice. The blood iced in my veins; how had he even noticed it was fake?! 'You are more than welcome to stay, and I promise you'll be safe here.'
'Thanks, Vic.' Was the only thing I was able to mutter. He inched closer to me and put a finger under my chin, lifting it to make me look at him. I genuinely thought he was going to kiss me or something, but felt stupid by thinkinthat when his mouth moved to my ear and whispered.
'It's my pleasure, but you have a whole lot of explaining to do, love.'
