Roots Beneath Ideals

The New Kid

Monday morning and someone is calling me. Why do people assume I'm a morning person? Seriously?

"Hello?"

"Hi Keri, this is Jane from UCLA administrative office."

"Hi Jane what could possibly be going on that you dared to call me in the morning?"

Jane chuckled. I was able to joke around with her because I actually spent a lot of time with her while I was getting my shit together for school and I helped with tours for new students. She's so chill I love her.

"I know you hate mornings but I actually need a big favor."

"You always need me for a big favor."

"We have a new student and I know you're on holiday, but I really need you to drive out and give him a quick rundown of the school. He just transferred and is moving in when break is over."

You've got to be shitting me...

"What time do you need me there?"

"By two, please and thank you."

"You so owe me breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a shopping trip."

"Of course. See you in a bit. I'll have food for you."

"You better. Bye Jane."

"Bye Keri."

I sighed and rolled out of bed on to the floor.

"Ow."

"Oh sorry guys. I forgot you were there."

Mike, Mitch, Chloe, and Ashley had spent the night after the scene I caused. They wanted to make sure I didn't go to kill Vic, but they all fell asleep before me anyway. Ash and Chloe were with me on the bed while Mitch and Mike camped on the floor.

"Why are you up so early? Sneak attacks aren't your thing." Mike said

"I have to go to school."

"Why?"

"I have to show a new kid around."

"But you’re on break."

"I know." I stretched then got up. "Ash get up. We have a new kid."

"I'm pretty sure Jane asked you to do it, not me and you."

I threw my pillow at her, "If I have to suffer so are you now get up. I'll be out the shower in a bit."

She mumbled and flipped over.

I let the warm water from the shower wake me up completely. I tried to take a quick shower, but all I kept doing was thinking about random shit and Vic of course. I could've stayed longer if a knock didn't come.

"Get out you bitch, before you finish all the hot water." Ashley said.

"Sorry, sorry, coming out now."

When I got back in my room, the boys were gone.

I pulled on a pair of skinnies and one of Vic's band tees after putting some lotion on my skin.
I may hate the guy but he sure has some pretty comfy clothes.

"I need to borrow clothes." Ashley said walking in as I finished putting on my shoes.

"Take your pick. But I want them all back."

"Fuck off."

I smiled at her, "I'll go make your coffee now."

After a skip and a hop I was in the kitchen whipping up some coffee. I grabbed my bottled frap out the fridge since I didn’t enjoy the taste of coffee like that.

"Thank you."

“You’re welcome.”

“So what do we know about the new student?” Ashley said after taking a sip.

“Nothing at all.”

“Jane is no help. Well let’s go, we don’t know how this traffic is going to turn out especially down in LA.”

“Kay.”
♫♪♫♪
“Well his name is Tyson Pierce, he’s originally from Dallas, Texas and he plans on majoring in law. Just like you Keri, that’s the main reason I had you come, he has most of the same classes as you.”

Just as promised Jane had food waiting for me and I was happy and finally in a good mood. Finally she also filled me in about the new kid.

“How does something like that happen?” Ashley asked.

“What do you mean?” Jane asked.

“How does he have almost all the same classes as Keri?”

Jane shrugged.

I just kept eating.

So what if he has the same classes as me. Doesn’t mean I’m actually going to talk to him. He might be a super creep for all I know. I wonder what Mike and Mitch are doing right now, probably something really fun, like quading. I really want to go quading. Maybe they’ll-.

I lost my train of thought when I saw a gorgeous guy with the most amazing blue eyes walk in. He almost reminded me of Cameron, but he had dark brown hair almost black and snake bites.

Holy mother of God he’s beautiful!

I did a side glance to Ash and she returned my look.

“You must be Tyson. I’m Jane Stewart.” Jane said getting from behind her desk and shaking Tyson’s hand.

“Nice to finally meet you.” Tyson said with a warm smile.

Right away I picked up on his southern accent. I almost fainted. His smile was equally as amazing. I saw Ashley shut her phone then mine went off. I fumbled to open it.

‘Can I rip his clothes off now or later? He’s gorgeous, oh my god I want him!!!’

I nodded my head and gave her a look that said I know.

“These are your tour guides for the day. This is Keri Thompson and Ashley Grammer.”

“Hi, nice to meet you,” I said.

I waited for Ashley to follow but she just stared, so I nudged her.

“Oh, oh! Hello!”

I hit my forehead and shook my head. Tyson chuckled at the scene. Even his laugh was cute. What about this guy that isn’t amazing? Oh God what am I getting myself into?

“Well then, here’s your schedule. These girls will take care of you from here… well at least one of them will.” Jane said.

“Hey!” Ashley yelled.

I snickered at her and she punched my arm.

“Oww,” But I still continued to laugh. “Come on Ty, I’ll show you to the dorms first. You don’t mind me calling you Ty do you?”

“No not at all.” He answered with that smile of his.

All three of us walked out the administrative office straight to the boy’s dorm.

“This will be your new home,” I said unlocking a bedroom door. “I hope you’ll enjoy your stay here.”

“As long as I get to see your pretty face.”

I suppressed a blush as I looked back at his face.

Ashley cleared her throat, making us break our gaze.

“Shall we continue?”

“Right, sorry.” I ducked out of the room.

“Can I scan just a little longer?” Tyson asked.

“Sure.” I answered. I turned to Ashley who was glaring at me. “What?”

“Why do you always get the good ones?”

“What are you talking about?”

“You just met the kid and he’s already eyeing you.”

“No he’s not, he’s being nice. Anyway you’re always the one turning guys down left and right.”

“I know, I know,” she said with a sigh.

“You can have him, I’m not interested, plus I just broke up with Vic.”

“Well you see I would be the kid has already got eyes for you.”

“No he doesn’t.”

“Are you two fighting over me already?” Tyson said with a smirk.

Well if I had any interest in him before it’s all gone now. I can’t stand cocky guys!

“Hardly.” I said turning on my heels, “Shall we continue?”

Next we showed him to the showers, lounge, café, and then his classrooms. Jane wasn’t kidding when she said he had a similar schedule to mine. We had law, psych, history, and Spanish together.

Gee this is going to be fun.

After we showed Tyson a few more of the buildings and the spot where our group gets together if he ever needed any help and were back in Jane’s office.

“And that’s it.” Ashley said taking a seat.

“Thank you very much for taking time out of your day to show me around. Really I appreciate it.” Tyson thanked us.

“No problem. Say when you are moving your stuff in, maybe Keri and I can help out again.”

I scoffed, “About that. Did you forget I’m leaving for New York?”

“Oh you are when?”

I eyed Tyson, “This Wednesday.”

His eyes light.

Oh god no.

“Are you leaving on the first flight out?”

“Yes…”

“Well I’ll see you then.” He said with a wink.

I stopped myself from rolling my eyes, “Gee that’s great.”

“How come you’re going?” Ashley asked.

“Oh my family always goes there every year for Christmas and New Year’s. What about you Keri?”

“Um, my friends are in a band and they’re going out there to record. I’m going up to Cambridge though.”

“Cambridge, that’s in Massachusetts…”

“I might be transferring to Harvard.”

“Oh…”

“So about you moving in?” Ashley said cutting the awkwardness.

“Yeah, my parents will be here soon, so today and tomorrow.”

“I can hang around a bit longer to help, but tomorrow, no way.” I said.

“Thanks.”

So Ashley and I hung around school a little while longer to help Tyson get some of his stuff moved into his dorm.

After some more assessments, Tyson actually wasn’t a cocky guy, he apologized for his comment and had Ashley and I laughing. Both this parents were big time lawyers down in Texas and very friendly. They kept great conversation and gave me a lot of advice.
I instantly fell in love with them Tyson was two years older than Ash and I (he started school late) and also had a big love for music. His favorite band is Guns N’ Roses, so he put some on while we put his stuff away. Once we were done Ash and I gave him our numbers to keep in touch over break (even though I was going to see him again in two days).

“You should let us take you ladies out for dinner,” Tyson’s dad offered.

“Thanks, but-.” I started but was cut off.

“We insist,” His mother interjected.

“Um…” I looked to Ashley.

She shrugged, “Why not?”

“Okay.”

“Great.”

Before dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Pierce dropped off the Uhal trailer they rented to move Tyson’s things. We had a nice dinner and at the end of the night Ashley and I thanked them for treating us.

“We’ll see you bright and early on Wednesday Keri.” Tyson’s mom said before taking off.

“I like your family, they’re nice.” I said to Tyson.

Ashley had left us to get something from our room.

“Yeah and they really love you.”

“I’m nothing special…”

“Listen, I know we just met today and all, but would you like to go out sometime when the semester starts again?”

“Uh..”

“Never mind I shouldn’t have asked. It’s too early and we just met.”

“No, no that’s not it. I just got out of a long term relationship.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.”

“No it’s alright, besides Ashley has a thing for you.”

“Yeah I saw that, but… I don’t know there’s something about you…”

There’s always something about me…

“At least consider it. Take as much time, but give me a slow yes instead of a fast no.”

That made me laugh.

“Alright, give me some time and I’ll think about it.”

Tyson displayed a bright smile, “Great. And make sure you find me after we land okay?”

“Yes sir.”

“Okay I’m ready to get back to your sexy friends!” Ashley said running back.

I could do nothing but shake my head at her. At last we hugged Tyson goodbye and made our way back to San Diego.

“Aw shoot.”

“What?”

“Mike’s going to kill me. I haven’t called him all day, he probably thinks I’m at some wild party without him.”

Ashley chuckled, “That’s Mike for ya.”
