Roots Beneath Ideals

Hospital Stay

We were at a dead lock. I wasn’t going to let anyone win this fight, but me. This was my situation, not theirs. I don’t care if they thought I was being selfish or whatever they thought. I made a promise and I tend to keep it no matter what.

“How can you continue to deafened him, I just don’t understand.” Dad asked in frustration.

“Dad, you don’t have to understand. It’s my problem.” I answered from my hospital bed, “I know you’re upset, everyone is, but try to understand. Tyson needs help and his parents aren’t giving that to him, so I will.”

Dad pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration, “Is there anything I can say or do to make you change your mind about pressing charges?”

“Not even a little bit. Daddy just be happy I’m alive. Tyson may not have hurt me, but what if one of the other guys got to me? “

“I am happy Princess, I just…” Dad moved to hug me for the billionth time, “Thank God.”

“So when do I get out of here, I feel like its been days.”

“You’ve only been here a few hours, settle down. I’m going to guess you want to see your friends now.”

“No, not yet. I want to see how Tyson is doing.”

“How did I know you were going to come to that conclusion eventually? Don’t answer, I’ll get a nurse.”

Once Dad left the room, I let out a heavy sigh and thought about how hard it was to convince the police to bring Tyson to the hospital instead of taking him in. They probably think there’s something wrong with me. They still questioned him anyways, at least from what Dad has told me, they have. Mom left the room as soon as I said Tyson was off the hook. Sometimes I wish she was more understanding like Dad was. Oh well.

“You’re free to roam as you please,” Dad said poking his head in.

“Awesome.” I got my slippers on and headed out the door to Tyson’s room.

I passed right by the guys not paying them much mind since they looked half asleep. Once I got to Tyson’s room, I had the urge to walk right out and yell and scream. His parents stood at the side of his bed. Looks of disappointment and anger crossed their faces. It disgusted me to think they would let their son become so sick and ignore it and then feel the need to lecture him because of their lack of parenting. I’m so sick of people right now and I was not about to deal with this anymore.

“Mr. and Mrs. Pierce, nice to see the both of you again.”

They both looked to me startled.

“Keri! I’m so glad to see you are alright. I don’t know what has gotten into this son of mine. I am really sorry.” Mrs. Pierce replied.

“Are you both really going to play this game?”

Tyson sighed, “Keri, please, not now.”

“Then when Tyson? How many more times are you going to let them ignore you?”

“Keri you need to understand-.” Mrs. Pierce started.

“I understand that you have neglected your own son all these years and thinking that moving would make everything go away. Well rein check it didn’t and it still won’t, if you don’t get Tyson the help he needs I will and you can stay out of his life.”

“You are a very disrespectful young lady.”

“Am I really though Mrs. Pierce? I don’t think a disrespectful person would ever care so much about someone to try and help them get better, deal with what I just went through and still want to help that person. I also don’t think a disrespectful person would fight the police to bring your son to a hospital to get him help and then repeatedly fight with your family to tell them you aren’t pressing charges. Yes Ma’am I certainly am one disrespectful person.”

I saw Tyson smirk from the corner of my eye, his dad too.

“Fine you think you can do a better job at taking care of my son, so be it. Alan lets go.”

“I think I’m going to stay a little longer.” Mr. Pierce replied.

She glared at all of us before shoving past me.

“It’s about time someone set that crazy bitch in her place.” Tyson said still smirking.

“Watch your mouth, that’s still your mother.” Mr. Pierce said.

“Move over,” I said so I could lie next to Tyson. “How do you feel?”

“I think I should be asking you that.” Tyson replied putting an arm around me, “I’m really, really sorry. You know I never meant to hurt you.”

“I know, but I’m fine. Just a slight headache, nothing terrible.”

“Good.”

“Keri.” I looked up to give my attention to Mr. Pierce., “Truly from the bottom of my heart I am sorry for what has happened. Tyson I apologize to you too. Keri is right, I should have taken better care of you, but your mother…”

Tyson smiled genuinely at his father, “Dad it’s alright.”

Mr. Pierce nodded his head, “Keri, don’t worry about your hospital bills, I’ll take care of them, it’s the least I can do and Tyson, I promise to get you some help as soon as we return to Texas.”

“Texas?” Tyson and I questioned.

“Yes, I think its best if you come home.”

“But Dad this is my home. For once I feel like belong. I want to stay.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes and I want you to stay with me.”

“Well I’ll leave you two to work things out,” I said getting off the bed. “I’ll see you later.”

I headed back to my room, but took a detour to the cafeteria; I was starving up a storm. I heard hospital food is gross though. What if it’s just a myth though and the food is actually really amazing? I just want to eat. Why didn’t daddy bring me food or something dammit, what do I look like?

“I thought I’d find you here.”

I ignored Mike’s voice continuing to look at the menu board.

“We heard about your decision. You know that we’re all upset about it.”

I shrugged my shoulder’s, “Oh well. Deal with it.”

“What now?”

“I go back to school next week, hopefully with Tyson. And his Dad stays to support and help him.”

“His dad?”

“Yup.”

“How’d that happen?”

“I accidentally bitched his mom out and his dad took my side.”

“Accident my ass. So that’s it?”

“Yeah, now buy me something I’m starving.”

“Sure, sure… I support your decision; I always knew somewhere deep in that black hold of yours was a heart.”
