Roots Beneath Ideals

I'm Coming Home

Finally I’m out of high school and in college, UCLA to be exact. The first year here I decided I would take summer school because I wanted to finish school as fast as I could so if I was accepted to Harvard, I'd already have most of my studies finished.
I was finished with this semesters classes and I was patiently waiting for Vic to pick me up. . At first, I thought being so far from Vic was going to be hard and suck, but we’re actually better then before. I guess the saying is true, “the further you, the closer you get.”
I just want to focus on Vic and my relationship as much as I can over winter break, I was so excited with all the things I had planned and I'm happy to say we're not breaking up anytime soon. Still, there was nothing different from when we were friends, everything is just more romantic and I love it. Everything is great.
I began to smile as I saw Vic pull up in his Honda. It's still so hard to think it's only been two years.
Wow.
I went over to Vic's car and knocked on the window making him jump.

"Hello there future rock star." I said as he rolled the window down. Vic smiled and opened his car door and I wrapped my arms around him giving him a big hug and kiss. "I've missed you soo much boyfriend."

"You really enjoy calling me that, don't you?" He asked still smiling.

"Absolutely, positively, yes sir."

He laughed, "Can you be anymore sure?"

I intertwined our fingers as Vic leaned against his car.

"Hmmm, yes. Yes I can."

Vic gave me another kiss, "God you don't know how much I've missed you Keri. Things are not the same without you around. I wish you didn't take those stupid summer classes."

"They're not stupid..."

These past few months of school have been really hard, so I've barley had time for anyone. I felt bad, but I knew my education was just a little bit more important. That’s really selfish of me, but it’s truly how I feel. I promised, I’d make up for all the missed time on this break and spring break. At least I hope I could.

I pouted a bit, "I know. I get lonely without my boys, but winter break is here and I'm done with testing.”

“Well I brought you a gift."

My eyes lit up, "You did? I got you something too."

"Yes, I did."

He dug into his pocket and revealed a box.

"A box, really? I thought I was getting a song or card."

Vic gave me a look and opened the box exposing a silver locket.

"Oh, Vic-." I was at a loss of words.

It was a locket I spotted a while back at the mall, when Vic and I had time for each other.

"Now, I know you're not a big jewelry person, but I saw how much you wanted it. So I saved up for it and well... Here. Plus, we didn't get to spend our anniversary together, so happy late two years."

Tears threatened my eyes; I didn't even bother to hold them back.
I've been so busy with school, I totally forgot about our anniversary. Forget about being selfish, I’m just a terrible girlfriend.
I opened my mouth to speak, but nothing came out. I shook my head back and forth, thinking of how I could forget.

"Hey, hey, stop with the negative thinking," Vic said catching my chin, making me look at him. "You've been busy, don't blame yourself. Now stop crying and turn around so I can put this on."

I smiled through all the tears and did as he said.

"I see you're staying with the blond," he said moving my hair aside.

"Yeah, I thought you liked it."

"I do, but I thought it was just a high school thing. You let it grow out your first year here."

"I know... I really like it this way."

I turned to face Vic after he removed his hands and modeled my new locket.

"Beautiful... I mean the locket not you."

I went to smack him, but he caught my arm, pulling me in for one of his long... amazing... unthinkable...
I wrapped my arms his neck, tangling my fingers in his hair, which needed to be trimmed. Vic sighed into our kiss, meaning he wanted more.

I pulled back, "No."

He pouted playfully, "Why, there's a room waiting for us, over there and I made this drive out here to come get you, I think I deserve a reward." he pointed towards my dorm.

I rolled my eyes, "No Victor. Plus, remember what happened the last time?"

Vic smiled, "Yup, I do. I remember you enjoying every minute of it."

"Jesus Vic. Anyway, Ashley is still in there getting ready to leave. So no. Plus I still haven't given you my gift."

"Fine, fine, fine. Way to let a guys hopes down.”

I laughed rolling my eyes again. "Suck it up, you’re a big boy." I dug into my bag. "I saw this the other day and thought about you." I pulled out a stuffed monkey holding a heart.

Vic's eyes lit up, "Keri you're too sweet. Thank you."

He gave me another kiss.

"You’re welcome. The one hand is Velcro so I figured you can put it on your mic stand while playing, so when I'm not around to see you play, it'll be like a little piece of me is with you."

"Thanks again babe. I love you."

"I love you more. Alright I’m ready to go.”

I walked to the passenger side of the car, about to get in when someone began calling for me. It was my classmate Eric.

"Hey Eric!" I waved.

Eric stopped to catch a breath as he reached us.

"Sorry, I'm probably keeping you from something," he said breathless.

"Yeah, just a little," Vic mumbled.

I elbowed him.

"No, not at all. What's up?"

"I never got to wish you a happy holiday and give you a card. So here." Eric handed me a card and finally took knowledge of Vic. "Oh, hi. I'm Eric and you would be?"

"Oh, Eric, this is my boyfriend Vic. Vic this is Eric."

"Boyfriend huh? Keri's never mentioned you before."

Oh fuck my life!

"Oh, she hasn't? We've only been dating for the past two years."

Vic looked down at me with cold eyes. Damn. He's pissed.

"I have mentioned that I had a boyfriend... Just not you... You know how I am...."

Vic smiled like it was nothing, "That's some what understandable."

"Keri's mentioned that you’re both childhood friends. That explains where she runs off to whenever our class goes out. You're a lucky man. Guys are always trying to get Keri’s attention. Well I’ll see you around Kearly Kream.”

Eric pulled me into a hug before getting into his own car.

“Kearly Kream, huh? Don't answer that; just get in so we can go."

"Okay."

We drove a whole 45 minutes in pure silence. Vic still wouldn't say a word to me, even when I tried making small talk. He would either shake his head or shrug. I don’t blame him though. I’d be mad if he said that to his friends… Well most of his friends are my friends too, but that’s beside the point.

I understand that he's upset... well pissed is more like it, but he could still talk to me. I would prefer if he were yelling at me then giving me the cold shoulder.

“Vic come on, I understand that you're majorly pissed at me, but are you really going to act like a kid an give me the cold shoulder for the rest of the ride and probably the rest of my vacation? Will you please just say something, anything, yell at me for all I care. Just say something..."

"Something." he simply stated.

"Wow, great. Just great. My boyfriend is being a complete ass because of something some kid said and he won't even let me fully explain myself."

"Yes, I’m an ass. Thank you. Is there anything else that you would like to add to my hurt pride?”

I put my face in my hands.

God, I really am horrible person.

"Do not try crying, you aren’t getting out of this one.”

"I wasn't even going to. You know I do this when I get frustrated."

"Why are you the one frustrated?"

"Can you stop talking now, your giving me a headache."

"Really, I thought you wanted me to talk, even if it meant yelling."

"I didn't think you would since you aren’t the angry type."

I turned myself so I was facing the window. It's been way too long since I've been to San Diego; I forgot how much I missed this place. I can't wait to get home to see my favorite people. Especially Mike. Oh how I've missed that cocky grin of his. I smiled at the thought of how he would greet me with one, asking if I've been going to wild sex parties or something as to why I haven't been around. My dad would join in and say how much of a prude I am to even go to those things. Then mike would spill about Vic and my first time. Dad would then try and kill Vic and I with some new weapon he found on his last expedition... Oh jeez just thinking about it makes me want to be home even faster.

After about five minutes I spoke again.

"Vic I'm really sorry. I feel absolutely horrible. None of this is your fault it's all mine, I'm sorry for calling you an ass. I just... I don't know. You know how I get when people get into my business, the first time I said I had a boyfriend everyone was in my hair. I like keeping to myself and I like keeping you to myself. There's just no proper way to apologize to you. Anything I say isn't going to be enough-."

Vic put his hand over my mouth to stop me from talking.

"Okay. Before you start rambling and snotting, stop. An "I'm sorry" was all I was looking for, nothing more."

I nodded my head, but this hand on my mouth thing was not working so I bit him.

"Okay, ow, I deserved that, but let's talk about this later calmly, after I give you the rest of your gift."

"Kay...wow can you believe that?"

"What?"

"We've been dating for two years and we never fought till now."

Vic laughed, "Yeah, that's true. Well, let's hope that never happens again, I didn't enjoy yelling at you."

"I thought it was kinda cute."

"Cute, really?"

"Yeah."

"Why is everything I do, cute to you?"

"Because it is."

"Then you go and pinch my cheeks like I'm some kid."

"Babe, you're just that cute. I can't help myself. I always tell-."

My phone began ringing cutting me off.

"Who is it?"

"Ashely, hold on." I pressed the talk button, "Hey, what's up?"

"Hey, a bunch of us are going out for a Christmas dinner tomorrow, do you want to come? Or are you busy?"

"Um not that I know of. When was this decided?"

"Just now. I'm with Andrea and Eric. We're calling people up."

"Oh, um, hold on." I put the phone on mute, "Vic, a group of my classmates want to go out for a Christmas dinner tomorrow. Do you have anything planned?"

"No.”

"Do you want to go?"

"Hmm, let me think about it." He sat, staring off, not replying.

"Stop being a jerk."

Vic chuckled, "I'm not, I'm really thinking about it."

"No your not, all you're doing is stalling."

"No I'm not. Let me think."

"Victor."

"Alright, alright, let's go."

I took the phone off mute.

"Ash, you there?"

"Yeah."

"Is it okay if I bring someone?"

"You mean as in that really hot-."

"Yes."

"Heck yeah, bring him along."

"Okay then, count me in."

"Kay, I'll send you a text with more info later."

"Thanks, see you later."

I yawned after hanging up.

"You've had a lousy week with testing and all. Go a head and take a nap."

"You sure, I can stay up."

"No, sleep." Vic took hold of my left hand, "Hey, so what do you tell everyone about the ring I gave you?"

I looked down at my hand, where my promise/engagement ring rested. I thought back to the day Vic gave it to me.
♫♪♫♪
"Where are you taking me now, Vic?" I asked as Vic had yet another blindfold on me.
It was becoming a habit that I did not enjoy.

"Just calm down, we're here." Vic told me reassuringly.

I sighed, "I can't believe you woke me up in the middle of the night, I also can't believe you drove to my school and drove back to SD. Vic I have a big test in the morning," I began whining.

Vic just laughed.

"I'm going to kill you of I don't pass."

"Calm down, you'll pass. Now sit, carefully. I swear every time I take you some where you end up falling."

"Well maybe if you didn't always blind fold me.”

I carefully sat where ever Vic wanted me. It was freaking cold.

"Metal?"

"Yup."

"Vic, where are we?"

"Take the blind fold off."

I took the bandanna off.
We were at a park.

"Why are we here?"

“Just bringing back some memories think of one.”

I looked around the playground and at the merry-go-round that I was sitting on. I took one more look, thinking of some old memories from our old playground. Then I looked at the merry-go-round once again. Something clicked. I began laughing, when I saw the dent.

"Oh, come on, it's not that funny."

"Yes it is, I slammed your face for the first time here. Man we got in so much trouble." I turned over so I was right next to the dent, "I didn't know I had so much power... Even for back then... Wow."

I ran my fingers over it.

"Yeah, me neither."

"What had happened... Oh yeah, you stole my lollipop."

"Yeah, I was going to give you a ring pop instead because we were "married", but you didn't want it. Yet you still ended up taking it after you slammed my face against this."

I laughed again, "Hey, you offered it to me. So I had both in the end."

"You just wanted a reason to kill me."

"That too."

Vic lied back, looking at the stars. I joined, resting my head against his chest, basking in his natural scent. We haven't had much time for each other in the past two months, with us both going to school and with Vic doing his shows. So this was sweet.
Vic wrapped his arms around me after I slightly shivered.

“Thanks for getting me out tonight. I really need this. I'm so stressed with school. Being a freshman again sucks. Plus I also have to take a bar test to really make it, that thing is super hard to pass. Then I'm really going to keep you in check since I’ll be working so much. There's already a bunch of girls drooling over you and we're not in high school anymore."

He laughed lightly, "Wait, now you have to keep me in check? I thought you trusted me."

"I do, I'm just saying. There's some fast ass girls around here who would love to have your Mexican babies," I joked.

"You would be the one to say something like that."

I shrugged.

"So would you like a ring pop?"

"Hell yeah," I shot up saying.

Vic stood and dug into his pocket, "Watermelon if I remember properly."

I nodded my head continuously and greedily took the candy and noticed it was already open.

"Why is this already open? Did you already start to eat it?"

Vic smirked, "Just open it."

I dumped out its contents.
Two rings fell out.

"What's the meaning of this, Vic?" I asked looking up at him.

He was down on his knees, smiling. He took the gold band out of my right hand and took my left.

He’s not going to do what I think he’s about to do. Oh god. Oh god. No way. Make sure you say yes Keri. You love this man in front of you. Say yes. Keep calm and say yes.

"Okay, so this isn't completely what you think... Okay yes it is, but not completely. You know that I love and adore you will all of my heart-as corny as it sounds- but I mean it and I do want to spend the rest of my life with you, and yes, but no I'm asking you to marry me. For now, this ring is a promise that I will never hurt you, I will never leave you, I will always be there for you and do whatever it takes to keep you happy. In the future, this ring will be to secure this promise forever. I promise you, as soon as the band gets signed; I'm going to make you mine forever. The same day I'm going to bring you to the court house and marry you."

He then slid the ring onto my finger. I honestly didn't know if I wanted to cry, laughed, or go straight out crazy. So I kept my mouth shut. I couldn’t get that yes out.

Vic took it all the wrong way though, "God, I knew this was going to happen. This is too fast right? I'm sorry, but this is the way-."

I brought Vic's lips to mine, "I'm just not sure how to react is all. There are three different emotions running through me right now and I'm not sure which one is going to explode first. So I'm trying to stay clam," I whispered to him.

Vic nodded his head, "You still didn't-."

"Vic come on, your the only other person that knows me better than myself, so what do you think."

Vic picked me up, spinning us around."

♫♪♫♪
"Oh, I told them that you gave it to me as a gift. It's a promise we'll always be together. Every time someone asks about it, I zone out and think back to that day. That was probably one of the most romantic things you've ever done. I woke up the next morning thinking it was all a dream that I wanted to come true. But it wasn't a dream and it was true. My heart raced for the rest of the day, I could barely take my test. And now every time I look at it, my heart races and I hope you guys get signed so we can be official, but all that takes time, right?"

Vic's smile grew, "Yup."

"So, let me in on my welcome home party."

"Who said anything about a welcome home party?"

I punched Vic with my free had, "Don't bullshit me, I always get one for summer and winter break. Please, tell me, please?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because you'll have to wait and see."

Taking my hand out of his, I crossed my arms, "Loser."

I pulled my legs up, so I could wrap my arms around them, thinking if a way to get it out of him.

"Don't even try Keri Chrisette Thompson. I know what you’re doing and it isn't going to work. I know you like the back of my hand."

My jaw dropped.

He did not just call out my whole name! I hate when he does that!

"Yeah, I went there, what are you going to do about it, punch me again?"

No possibly shove you out of the car and get hit by traffic.

Vic smirked, "How are you killing me off this time?" Then he started messing up my hair.

"Vic, stop. I look like a bum as is," I whined.

"You look fine, but I think that it's about time to trim this baby."

I crinkled my nose, "You should speak for yourself. You've been letting yourself go."

I tugged at his brown hair.

"Yeah, yeah. I don't have you around to bug me anymore, so I let it grow out a bit more."

"It's ugly," I teased.

"You’re ugly."

"I rather be ugly then look like a gorilla." I smiled in triumph.

This time Vic's jaw dropped. "That was mean, take it back."

I laughed, "No."

"Take it back Keri."

"No Vic."

"Fine, you asked for it."

He started tickling me.

"Vic, please stop," I tried getting out.

"Take it back."

"No-it's unsafe for you to be driving and tickling me at the same time."

"I'm perfectly fine doing both."

"Please, please stop."

I started coughing from the lack of oxygen from all of my laughing.

"Are you okay?" Vic asked stopping.

“Sure.”

"Are you hungry?"

I eyed him, "What do you have in mind?"

Vic laughed, "Why are you looking at me like that?"

I crossed my arms again.

I could guarantee he plans on taking me to another one of those vegaterian places. He’s not even a real vegetarian, whatever it is. He’s like a fake Jamaican. A Jafaking. That’s what he is. Okay that was mean, he’s not fake in anyway.

"There's this new veg-."

I put my hands over my ears, cutting Vic off.

"No, no, no. Last time you brought me to a vegetarian place I was sick for a week. No, I refuse, I refuse."

Vic continued to laugh, "Aw, babe-."

"No, take me somewhere there's meat. I’m a carnivore, not an herbivore.”

"No babe, you’re an omnivore. You eat both meats and plants.” Vic said with a smile. “There’s this new meat and vegetarian restaurant that I’ve been wanting you to try and ironically the name of the place is V&M.”

I bit my bottom lip to stop from laughing. Who would think of such a name, that’s so ridiculous.

"Go ahead, laugh. I know the name is corny, but the owners are super nice and the food is really good. They made the place for couples like us. The husband is a big meat eater like you and the wife likes vegan things like me. So now do you want to go?"

"Hell yeah, put this baby in drive already. I need to meet this man and give him tons of kisses."

"You can hug him. All of your kisses belong to me."

I rolled my eyes and laughed, "Whatever. Let's go, unless you want to hear me complain about how hungry I am."
