A War in My Head

Say All that You Have to Say

My thoughts were always crammed with worry these days. School was ending soon and I was swamped with exam prep and running for prom queen, and trust me they were both equally as difficult. Mainly because Taylor was determined not to let me win. She didn’t understand that she doesn’t have a huge say on who wins. It’s kinda sad how much she is trying though, my mom even asked me why I’m not friends with Taylor anymore. She doesn’t understand that Taylor isn’t a nice person, and so her and my father asked her parents and Taylor over for dinner. And to top it all off they have invited Vic, to get to know him. Fantastic.

“Why does your mom want me at this dinner?” Vic moaned for the millionth time. I shrugged, he knew as much as I did. My father really wasn’t that bothered about it all.

“I don’t know, but we have to sit with Taylor and pretend we don’t hate her” I sighed, throwing my face into a pillow.

“Well, that’s going to be Hell on earth” Vic joked. I looked up at him and laughed, he was always trying to make me laugh which I appreciate.

I climbed off my bed and looked myself over in the mirror again. Taylor didn’t scare me, but I couldn’t let her catch me on an off day and today hadn’t gone so great. I got a mock exam for Math and failed. It put a huge downer on all of my upcoming exams, even though I know I still have time to improve, it just scares me.

“You look amazing, as always” Vic said, coming up behind me. He wrapped his arms around my waist from behind and put his chin on my shoulder.

“Ain’t you cute” I giggled, looking at him in the mirror.

“Not as cute as you are” He kissed my cheek. I turned around and looked at him.

“Vic I-”

“Lynn, Vic our guests are here” My mom called upstairs. I groaned loudly and over exaggerated.

“Let’s go” He said grabbing my hand and led my out of my room and downstairs to my living room.

We walked in to be greeted by Taylor and my mom talking. Her parents were sitting on the couch with Taylor and my parents on the opposite couch. They all turned their attention to me and Vic. “Hello Lynn” Taylors parents said to me politely.

“Hi Mr Owens” I said nicely. “Mrs Owens” I smiled at her.

“Hey” Vic said casually, he really didn’t care to impress or even be liked by Taylors parents. I hope they don’t like me either, their approval isn’t necessary.

“Now we’re all here, why don’t we all go to the dining room and I’ll serve dinner” My mom said nicely. I pulled Vic along, into the dining room and we sat down.

Taylor sat across from us, her parents at either side of her. My mom and dad sat at either end of the table, making things super awkward for me. My mom walked past me and Vic. “Would you like any help in the kitchen” Vic asked my mom, it was definitely adorable that he was being so polite, even in the circumstances. Taylor made a face at his actions.

“Sure Vic, thank you for offering” My mom smiled at him, he got up and went into the kitchen with my mom. My dad smiled at me.

“Vic is a lovely young man” My dad approved. I looked at him and nodded.

“I agree, he treats me right” I smiled happily.

“Shitty kisser” Taylor said under her breath, no one else heard her but me. I glared at her with anger.

Vic walked back in with my mom, holding some plates. He set them down in front of who my mom told him to. He walked back into the kitchen and came back again with some other stuff. After which he sat next to me and grinned at me. “What?” I mouthed at him.

He just winked at me and turned his head to look at Taylor. “So Taylor, how’s school?” My mom asked her. She put on the most fake ass smile ever.

“It’s going so well Mrs Gunnulfsen thanks for asking” She said sweetly. My mom nodded in acceptance of her answer.

“I’m glad to hear it” She smiled at Taylor.

“It’s such a shame that me and Lynn are both up for prom queen though, I wouldn’t want a rivalry” She said fakely. I rolled my eyes and looked at my food, picking at it.
“You didn’t tell me you were up for prom queen” My mom looked at me. I just shrugged. “Are you up for king Vic?” She asked.

“Nah, I didn’t feel like it but my friend Jaime is and we’re hoping he wins” Vic said nicely to my mom.

“I hope he does then” My mom said eating some of her chicken.

My father and Taylors dad were deep in conversation about work, my mom and Taylors mom began chatting about pointless adult stuff. Leaving me and Vic with Taylor. “You’re not going to win” Taylor said smugly.

“What makes you think sure” I said quietly, I didn’t want our parents to hear.
“Because you’re not pretty enough Lynn, sorry but you’re just not. Everyone knows it” She shoved her glass of water to her mouth and drank some.

“Giving the full football team blowjobs isn’t the most lady like tactic to winning prom queen Taylor but then again you’re not one to do things by the books now are you” I shrugged. Vic sniggered next to me making the parents look at us all.

“That was a funny joke Taylor, you should share it with everyone” Vic spoke up.

“Yeah, Taylor it was really funny” I grinned at her. She looked at me with fury.

That’s basically how dinner went on for the rest of the night. When it was time for the Owens to vacate I couldn’t be happier. I stood at the island in my kitchen, Vic sitting on a stool and my father washing dishes, handing them to me to dry. My mom was sitting next to Vic.

“She’s just a horrible person okay” I shrugged. My mom didn’t understand it.
“She was really nice tonight, why can’t you sit down and talk about it” My mom suggested. I shook my head and laughed.

“That’s such a motherly thing to say, sorry but no. In high school you can’t just chat about things and everything will be all fine and dandy. No. Taylor is popular, she has no time for it, and she’s done really horrible things to my friends now. I don’t like her” I explained.

“Okay, I’ll take your word for it” My mom finally decided to drop it.

“So Vic what are you going to study in college?” My dad turned to look at Vic.

“Graphic Design” Vic said proudly.

“That’s a bit different, I hope it works out well for you” My dad was so nice, I have a great dad.

“Have you heard from SDS yet?” My mom was still on my case about college. I got an acceptance letter a week ago but I haven’t told anyone yet. Not even Vic, and the guilt was eating me alive.

“No sorry” I mumbled. She just nodded and looked at my father, they shared a look.

“Are you busy on Saturday morning?” My mom asked me. I looked at her and shook my head no. “Good, we’re going to get your prom dress then” She clapped loudly.

“I’m scared” I said making a face as I dried off another dish.

“Don’t be like that Lyndsey” She said pretending to be stern.

“You’re gonna make me look like a giant cupcake though aren’t you?” I whined knowing full well what I was getting dragged into.

“We’ll see how I feel on Saturday morning” She winked at me as she got up off the seat. She walked off into the living room. My father followed her leaving me and Vic alone.

“Your parents are so cool” He grinned at me. I shrugged, they’re kinda cool I guess.

“Have you met them?” I said sarcastically.

“Vic’s right, we are cool” My mom shouted from the living room.

I grabbed his hand and led him through my house to the front door. “Let’s go for a walk” I suggested. We left my house and it was sun down. The sky was a light pink colour, it was beautiful.

“Before we went downstairs for dinner you were about to say something to me, what was it?” Vic blurted out. I looked at him hoping her forgot.

“I-I uh, I” I stalled, I wasn’t ready anymore. “I got into college” I said quickly. My brain didn’t want to say that but it just happened.

“Lynn, that’s amazing. I’m so happy for you” He gushed. I could feel the regret growing, knowing I have absolutely no intentions of going to college.

“Thanks” I smiled at him, he pulled me in and kissed my lips.

“I’m so proud of you, and we’re gonna kick ass at prom. Then have an amazing summer and go to college. I can’t wait for everything to just happen” He went on as we walked down the street and on the way to the park. I felt the knot in my stomach tighten. I wasn’t going to ruin tonight, but I had to tell him soon. Exams were in 2 weeks and prom was in 3 weeks... That’s not that long.
