Raising Chandler

Never Too Late

We arrived at the hospital ten minutes behind the ambulance, according to the receptionist. Jaime and I were directed to the waiting room outside the ER, where we were informed that Ella had lost a lot of blood. I concentrated on anything but the question that was repeating in my mind; was I too late?

I observed the other people in the waiting room. Some were pacing, some were sleeping….some were just staring blankly into space. I locked eyes with a young boy who was sitting across the room from us. He looked to be about eight years old, and he was sitting next to another boy. The other boy seemed to be about sixteen or seventeen and had a stitched-up gash on his face. The younger boy kept staring at me, then got up and walked over to Jaime and I.

“What’s your name?” he asked. “Chandler…” I responded, somewhat confused. “What’s your last name?” he asked. I swallowed. “Err….” I paused, then shook my head. “Fuentes,” I said confidently, causing Jaime to look down at me and smile slightly.

“Hello, Chandler Fuentes, my name is Gavin Jones and I am seven,” he said with a bright smile on his face. I couldn’t help but smile back. He didn’t seem to be aware of where he was, and I could tell the boy sitting with him was trying hard not to cry, so little Gavin must’ve been too young to understand.

“Well, it’s nice to meet you, Gavin Jones,” I said, and stuck out my hand, which he grabbed and shook hard.

“Jones?” I heard a nurse call, and the older boy got up from his seat and walked over, Gavin hot on his trails. The nurse looked pained and said something that made the older boy’s face fall. He nodded and bent down, picking up Gavin and saying something to him. Gavin’s smile faded and he began to tune up. I had to look away. That could’ve been Ella.

I leaned over on Uncle Hime and buried my face in his arm. He stroked my head and whispered, “She’ll be okay.”

Hours passed and I was just beginning to doze off, when Jaime tapped me on the shoulder and pointed at the ER’s door. My eyes widened and I stood as I saw Ella being rolled out in a wheelchair. She looked up and scanned the room until our eyes found eachother. She pointed my direction and smiled. The nurse nodded and rolled her over to me.

She reached for my hand and I met hers halfway. “You saved me when I didn’t think I wanted to be saved….thank you Chandler,” she said softly. I rubbed her hand gently with my thumb and sighed in relief. I wasn’t too late.

Notes

This one was kinda shortish, but I'm about to upload a longer one :3 I did a lot of writing in my spare time at school haha probably will tomorrow too because I'll be in Journalism/Yearbook for almost 2 hours (block schedule) I hope you all are enjoying the story :) I'm sorry if it's too predictable! Stay strong and I love you babes!!!! <3
