Raising Chandler
Uncle Hime
I woke up to my phone buzzing like crazy. I looked at the clock and saw that it was 5am. I groaned and picked up my vibrating phone.
"Hello?" I muttered sleepily. "Hey kiddo, I'm outside. We need to talk. Can you come out here?" the voice of my Uncle sounded through the phone. If he's waking me up at 5 am, it's about something important. "Yeah, I'll be out in a few," I replied, sitting up. The call ended and I slipped on shoes, a shirt, and some boxers.
I quietly climbed out my window and through the bushes, then made my way to where Uncle Jaime was sitting in his car. He motioned for me, and I climbed into the passenger's side. "What's going on?" I asked. A car passed by us and the headlights shone on his face, and only then was I made aware that he was crying.
"I can't lie to you anymore. I have to tell you the truth about your parents. Your real parents. But not here," he said, then put the car in drive. I was confused, yes, but I was curious. What did he mean by my real parents? The way he said the word, and his tear-stained face sent shivers down my spine. What really happened? Who are my real parents?
We parked in an empty lot somewhere that I was unfamiliar with. Hime killed the engine and we sat in silence for a few moments, then he spoke in a rough, gravely voice.
"Do you want to know, Chandler?" he asked, and I nodded, unable to speak for the nerves that were keeping me so intrigued with what he had to say. "Okay," he said, and everything was silent again.
"When you were two years old, you, your twin sister, your parents, your other uncles, and I were all in a car on the way to Jack and Lil's wedding. A car came around a corner, your dad tried to swerve and then....." he trailed off into sniffles and quiet sobs. "The truck was coming too fast, it hit our car and we flew off of the cliff we were driving on...Your mother, father, sister, everyone but the two of us, were killed. When your parents didn't make it, Lilly and Jack, who are really your Aunt and Uncle, took you on to raise as their own. They originally had plans to tell you the truth, I don't know why they didn't..." he said through the tears that were running down his face.
"What were their names?" I choked out. I didn't realize I was crying until I tried to speak. "Vic and Alli Fuentes. Your uncle's names were Mike and Tony. Tony and I used to date...Tony and Mike were dating when the crash happened. The truth of the matter is, you're the only Fuentes left," he said.
This whole time I've been lied to. What else did they lie about? Why didn't they tell me the truth? Who am I?
