Raising Chandler

Familiar Faces

I woke up on Aubrey's floor at 5 am with my phone in my hand buzzing like crazy, and a sticky note stuck to my forehead.
I sat up and set my phone on my knee, then took the note off and read it.

Thanks Chan. I'm glad you're my big brother.
Also, I went for a walk to the beach, so don't freak out
because I'm not there. Feel free to join me if I'm not
back when you wake up. I love you big bro <3
~A

I set the note on the floor and picked up my phone to see that I had a missed video call from Jaime. I called back, wondering what he could possibly need at five in the morning, and when the call was answered, I saw a very tired-looking Ella. I smiled at her, then she turned the camera around and showed me the most beautiful, bright orange sunrise that I'd ever seen. She zoomed the camera in and I saw a young girl, standing with her feet barely in the water, throwing rocks into the ocean.

She zoomed in as far as she could, and I saw that the little girl was Aubrey. I smiled again and Ella turned the camera back to herself. She gave me a questioning look, and I nodded. Ella smiled slightly and walked towards the ocean. The call ended, and my phone went black.

Despite being so tired, Ella was still as beautiful and kind-hearted as when I met her on that very beach. I stood up, and walked to my bedroom, then put on a pair of shorts and left a note for my parents, telling them that Aubrey and I would be back soon. I grabbed my wallet and some sandals, then headed for the beach.

When I got there, Ella was hugging Aubrey. I walked up to them and joined the hug, attempting to lighten the mood. The sun was almost all the way up now, so I guess you could say it worked!

We pulled apart and I looked at Aubrey, whose face was red and puffy. She sniffled and then latched onto me.

"I love you big brother," she mumbled. "I love you too, little sib," I replied, hugging her back. I closed my eyes and another vision opened up.

It was nearing sunset and I saw Mike sitting on the edge of water with his legs crossed. He had his eyes closed and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth as he faced the sky. He reached up and removed the cigarette, blowing smoke out of his nostrils, then he opened his mouth and released the rest of the smoke.

He took one more drag, then smothered the cigarette in the sand. He blew the smoke out slowly and it drifted my way. I smelled it's strong aroma and breathed it in. For some reason, the smell of cigarette smoke had always been somewhat therapeutic to me, which I guess is why I stole a couple out of my mom's pack that she kept hidden away from everyone.

Mike put his head in his hands and shook it like he was trying to rid himself of something. He stayed that way for a few moments, then I saw a long-haired shadow approach him. My eyes adjusted a bit, then I realized that the shadow was my birth dad, Vic.

I walked closer so that I could hear what they said.

Dad sat down next to Mike and put an arm around his shoulders.

"Are you alright, Mikey?" he asked, causing Mike to look up and give him a look that seemed to say 'Dude are you fucking kidding right now?' . Dad made a face. "I guess that was a stupid question. Look Mike, I know it hurts to see her with Jack, and I know that you're still adjusting to what happened earlier today with Tony, but it's okay to move on. You can let her go. I've seen the way Tony looks at you, and the way you look at him. There's something there that I haven't seen since you first met Lillian. And it seems a lot stronger now. It's okay to need time to adjust, but don't do it alone. Don't forget that I'm your big brother and I'll be here for you no matter what happens," he said. Mike looked away, then back at my dad.

"Vic, I don't know how I feel, I don't know what to feel, all of these emotions....they're all coming on at once and I just...." my uncle trailed off. He looked back towards the ocean, and his eyes glistened a bit in the little light that was left from the day.

Vic stood and opened his arms towards his brother. Mike stood up and walked into my dad's embrace. It wasn't until then that I noticed just how short my dad was.Either that, or just how freakishly tall Mike was. Like, woah.

"I love you big brother," Mike muttered, putting his chin on top of my dad's head. "I love you too, little sib," he replied. The vision faded out and I was brought back to reality.

"Chandlerrr...?"
I opened my eyes and the bright light hit me like a bullet. I grunted, shielding my eyes while they adjusted to the new light. Ella was waving her hand in front of my face and Aubrey looked concerned.

"You having another little vision or something?" Ella asked. "Yeah," I replied.

We stood in awkward silence for a few moments, then I broke the silence. "So, do you guys want donuts?" I asked, already knowing Aubrey's answer.

Aubrey grinned like a child and gave an enthusiastic 'yes', but Ella kind of looked downwards. Aubrey pulled on her hand excitedly. "Don't you like donuts?!" she asked, ceasing her jumping around. "I do, but there's something I have to go back to Jaime's and get first," she said, sighing. I gave her a confused look, but she just shook her head.

"Okay, well, let's go to Hime's and you can get whatever you need, then we can walk to the bakery," I smiled, grabbing her hand lightly. She gave a small smile and blushed in return.

I carefully intertwined our fingers and we began the long walk back to Jaime's.
I leaned towards her and placed a gentle kiss on her cheek, earning an 'eww' from my sister, then we continued our journey.

Upon arriving at Jaime's home, Ella climbed in through an open window and returned a few moments later with a small box and a jacket. She stuck the box inside her jacket, then grabbed my hand again.

I gave her a questioning look but she just looked straight forward and started walking, dragging me along behind her.

When we got to the bakery, there was only one person ahead of us in line. She ordered, then walked away with a coffee in one hand and a croissant in the other. I watched as she went to sit down with her friend, then broke the croissant in half. Her friend looked slightly annoyed. "Carbs, hun," the first girl said.

The second girl caught my glance and gasped. I looked away, but before I could, I saw the other girl turn around. I moved forward in the line, but soon felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked down at her hand, then she turned me to face her.

"Oh my God...." her friend whispered behind her. I gave them both a confused look as they stared at me in awe. "He looks just like...."
