Raising Chandler

Nightlights

I woke up in a panic. It was 2 am. I heard my mom crying hysterically, and what sounded like dad trying to calm her down, while barely keeping calm himself. I ran towards the screaming, and immediately regretted it. My eyes flickered from my mom's pained face, to the crumpled piece of paper in my dad's hand. My dad handed me the paper, and I read it over twice in disbelief. The time one the note read 1:30 am. My glance quickly shifted to my sister, laying peacefully on her bed.

I ran to her side and shook her violently, my eyes tearing up as I begged her to wake up. She didn't make a single movement to tell me this wasn't real. I stopped shaking her, and laid my head down on her stomach.

My baby sister. She was gone. I had been so sucked into my own drama, I'd never even noticed she was hurting. I could've been there, I could've saved her had I been there only 30 minutes earlier....I never should have run away.....this was my fault.

I heard a soft voice, and looked up hopefully, thinking it was my sister, but it wasn't. It was clearly a woman's voice, but one I didn't recognize.

“It's not too late....” I heard the voice say. I looked over at my parents. They didn't seem to notice the voice that was speaking. The room went silent and I saw a light. Then the person speaking was revealed. Not only her, though...she had two people accompanying her.
I saw my mom...my real mom... step out of the light, followed by my real dad, who was holding the hand of my late twin sister.

“Chandler, you aren't too late. All you have to do is....wake up,” my dad said. He and my mom smiled at me. I didn't want to wake up, but I wanted to know that I could save Aubrey. “You'll see us again, my son. Just wake up...save your sister....wake up...” my mom said, then the light consumed them, growing so bright that I had to shut my eyes for fear of being blinded.

I opened my eyes seconds later and sat straight up. I looked at my bedside clock. 1 am. I still have time.

I threw my sheets off, pulled on a pair of boxers and ran to my sister's room. I flung the door open, and yelled “DON'T” in a frantic voice. It startled my sister, who had the pills she planned to take halfway to her mouth already. I ran to her and knocked them out of her hand, hugging her tightly.

“Aubrey, please don't. I can't lose my sister...again. I love you and I am here to talk to you, I'm sorry I ran away when you needed me, please....stay....” I gasped. I was crying into her hair.

“H...how did you know, Chandler?” she asked, her voice cracking. I stroked her hair. “You wouldn't believe me if I told you,” I whispered. “Please promise me you won't...” I said, pulling away and looking down slightly at my baby sister's big, sad eyes. She started to look away, but I made her look back at me.

“I....I guess....I promise,” she said. I put my pinky out, and she rolled her eyes slightly, then wrapped hers around mine. I pulled her back into a hug, and I heard my mom's voice again. “I'm proud of you, son,” then her voice faded away and I heard her sister and my 'dad' come running into the room.

“I heard you yell, Chan! What happened?” my mom asked, both hers and dad's eyes wide. I shook my head. “Nothing did, mom,” I said, unable to contain a small smile. “Are you and your sister alright?” my dad asked. We pulled apart and Aubrey nodded, wiping her eyes.

“I just had a nightmare, daddy. Chan said he heard me crying in my sleep, and he came in here to make sure I was okay,” she said. Our parents smiled at me.
“Well that was a very kind thing to do. I'm glad everything is okay now. Aubrey, if you want, you can come sleep in our room, or one of us can stay in here with you,” my mom said. Aubrey looked at me, then back at them.
“Is it okay if Chandler stays in here with me tonight? I just feel safer with my big brother here,” she asked.

“Well, that's up to your brother,” my mom said, turning her attention to me.

“I'd be glad to stay and protect her,” I said, answering the question that wasn't asked. My parents nodded. “Do you two need anything?” my dad asked. We both shook our heads, then our parents turned and left.

Aubrey pulled back her sheets and climbed into bed, and I sat down on the carpet next to her bed.

“So why did you really want me to stay in here?” I asked. The way she answered scared me.

“It's not 1:30 yet.”
