Raising Chandler

Burning Eyes and Cigarettes

We kissed again, then stood up and brushed off. I cleared my throat and smiled at her, and she leaned up and kissed my cheek.

"I SAW THAT!" Jaime declared loudly. THAT'S when we noticed he was in the tree house. I guess I need to start being more observant. He smiled and patted my head. "Don't worry, I won't tell your mommy," he teased. I punched him in the arm and he stuck his tongue out at me.

My uncle is such a child sometimes, but I'd rather see him happy and childish than depressed and crying. I never want to see Jaime cry again.

"C'mon you two, we have a couple more places to go," he said. We filed out of the treehouse, and gave the home one last walkthrough, as if telling each of the rooms goodbye. On our way back through what I was told used to be Vic and Alli's room, I picked up a small piece of what I thought was just a paper. I unfolded it and flipped it over, revealing a picture of the two of them kissing the trunk of the tree outside Mike's window. There was a small carving between them, but I couldn't see what it was because of the low quality of the picture.

We walked out of the house and Jaime locked it back up. I looked at the creased old picture, then folded it up and stuck it in my pants pocket.

I was just about to get in the car, but I hesitated. "Hey, Uncle Hime, I forgot something in the treehouse. I'm going to run and go get it. He nodded and I took off. I got to the tree and pulled the photograph out of my pocket, then held it up to the tree. I ran my hand along the trunk until I felt the carving. I squinted at it, trying to make out the words, but it was difficult because the tree had begun to grow bark there again. I was able to see a faint heart shape, and the letters 'V' and 'A'. I looked back down at the picture and smiled. This is part of my mom and dad's story. Now it's part of mine.

I ran back to the car and hopped in. "Find what you were looking for?" Jaime asked. I nodded, and he put the car in drive and headed off.

Ella looked at me, then looked down. "Who are they?" she asked, pointing to the faded picture I forgot I was holding. "That's my mom and dad when they were teenagers," I replied. I saw Jaime look up in the rearview mirror, then back at the road. Ella smiled at the picture.

"Your mom was really pretty, and I see where you got your pretty hair from," she said, looking back up at me. "Yeah, she was really pretty, huh?" I agreed. "You know, your dad was pretty hot too," Jaime said, looking back at the mirror and wiggling his eyebrows. I laughed.

"Thanks, Jaime. I'm sure my mom thought so too," I replied. "Oh I know she did, how do you think you got here kiddo?" he laughed, making Ella giggle and me scrunch up my nose. "Ewwwww," Ella laughed.

We stopped at the top of a cliff. I recognized this cliff....I'd seen it somewhere before. I felt my face go pale when I remembered where....Lilly and Jack's original wedding photos. The ones they took before the crash.

Ella, though she didn't know why I was suddenly so quiet, grabbed my hand and whispered, "whatever it is, it will be okay." She squeezed my hand and we both climbed out of the car. I walked to the edge of the cliff and sat down. The view was beautiful. I didn't want to, but I closed my eyes anyway, trying to get a glimpse of the past.

Instead of a steady scene, however, I saw bits and pieces, sort of like silent mini-movies or still-shots. First I saw Lilly slip off the side of the cliff, and then I saw Jack catch her. I saw him pull her up, then they smiled and they appeared to talk, even though I couldn't hear anything. I saw them both drive away.

I saw them drive up together in Jack's convertible, and sit in his car on the edge of the cliff. I saw them kiss and then...lay down. (Ew).

Then they drove away and came back in a limo. Jack helped Lilly out, and she was in her wedding dress. They kissed, then walked to the edge of the cliff and held hands, looking back. I saw a flash and recognized that as one of their photos. Lilly's face contorted, then she picked up the edges of her dress and ran. My 'virtual' self ran after, and immediately wished I hadn't. I looked over the edge of the cliff and saw my dad fly through the windshield, then car crash into the rocks, crushed like an empty soda can. I saw Lilly take off down the road in my peripheral. Moments later I saw her down there with the car's remains. I watched as she dragged my mom out of the car, then as she collapsed next to her.

I tried so hard to open my eyes, to end this, but I couldn't stop watching. I saw her look up, and suddenly rush to the side of the car that wasn't as crushed by the rocks. She flung the door open and crawled in. When she crawled back out she was holding a wailing baby. After that I saw Jack join her. He crawled into the car as well and he pulled a barely-moving, tattoo covered, skinny man out of the car, and started CPR. Lilly had her phone out. I saw the ambulances arrive. They flipped the car upright, and pulled the rest of the passengers out. One paramedic went to check on my dad. The rest rushed to my Uncle Jaime and the tattooed guy. I saw all but two paramedics shake their heads. The one checking the baby, who by now, I assumed was me, and the one checking Jaime. They put Jaime and I into the ambulance, while the police tried to talk to my frantic....mom.

I finally opened my eyes. I shook my head and wiped a couple of tears away. I looked out and saw that the sun was setting.

"Uncle Hime, I'd like to go home for today, I have something important I forgot to do," I said. He nodded his head, and we all piled into the car again, driving away from the sunset.

When we got to my house, Jack was on the front porch. He looked tired and was smoking a cigarette. I turned to my Uncle. "See you guys tomorrow. 8 am?" I asked, and they both nodded. I wondered where Ella would stay, but I was sure she could stay with Jaime for a while.

I ran up to Jack and hugged him tightly. "Where's...uh...mom?" the word slightly sounded weird now. "In your room. Has been most of the day," he replied. I nodded and ran in and to my bedroom. I flung the door open, but I didn't see her. I turned and ran for Aubrey's room. I quietly opened the door, but all I saw was Aubrey sitting on her bed and drawing in her sketch book. I closed the door and ran to her and Jack's room. The door was open, so i walked in to see her laying still on the bed and looking up at nothing.

"Momma?" I asked, and thankfully she jumped. "Chandler? You scared the mess out of me," she said. She smiled and sniffled a bit, then I ran forward and hugged my mom like I did before I knew.

She hugged back and buried her face in my shoulder. "Thank you momma," I whispered. She pulled away and looked at my eyes, so I smiled at her. She smiled back. "You look a lot like your dad when you smile," she said. She held my face in her hands, then kissed my forehead.

"It's late, why don't you go shower off sweetheart?" she said. I nodded and did as I was told. I walked into the bathroom and shut the door. I took my shirt off and looked at my scarred torso.

I opened the drawer next to the sink and took out the razors that I'd planned to use, then threw them into the trash can, leaving a wad of toilet paper over them. I didn't need more scars, the crash gave me enough.

I turned on the water and pulled the rest of my clothes off while I waited for it to get warm. I stepped in and started to close my eyes, but quickly opened them for fear of seeing parts of my mom(s) or dad(s) that I really did not want to see.

I washed off then shut off the water, stepping out of the shower and shaking my hair like a wet dog. I wrapped a towel around my waist, then walked to my room. I put on a pair of boxers, then went back to my mom's room.

She and Jack were talking, so I knocked. They both looked over at me, and I pulled my cutest puppy-dog face- the only one that ever worked on them.

My momma smiled at me. "Yes, Chan? Do you want something?" she asked. I nodded.
"Will you guys tuck me in, like you used to?" I asked in a child-like voice. My mom laughed a little, as did my dad. "Sure, Chan. Just go sit on your bed, we'll be in there in a second," my dad said. I went and sat on my bed like they told me to. I could hear their voices floating through the hall.

"Do you think he's alright?" I heard Lil- er, my mom, ask. "I think now that he knows what really happened, he'll be more alright than he was," my dad said in a calm tone. "I was so afraid he hated us...I was afraid he'd never come back," she said sadly. "Lil, that's past tense. Thought. But he's back home, so you know that he did. I'm sure he was mad, but now, I don't think he is. And if he does hate us, all we can do is continue to love him, and hope that someday he will forgive and love us too," my dad said in a hushed tone. I heard a sigh, then footsteps, so I pretended to be on my phone.

When they walked into the room, I looked up and plastered a huge smile onto my face. "Are you ready?" my dad said. I nodded and braced myself. He tackled me down, then he and my mom grabbed the sheets and pulled them over my head, just like they used to. I followed the routine, pushing the sheets back down and giggling. My dad leaned down and kissed my forehead, ruffling my hair. Then, my mom kissed my nose. They went to the doorway and told me goodnight, but I made them wait.

"Momma, Dad? I know you aren't my birth parents, but you're still my parents, and this is still home. I love you both, and no matter where I go, I promise I will always come back," I said. Both of them smiled, and my mom looked like she was about to cry again. "Goodnight," I whispered, and they closed the door behind them. I listened to their footsteps fade, then turned onto my side and drifted into sleep with a small smile still on my face. I still love you, momma.
