Raising Chandler
More Trees?
Jaime paid for our meals and then we left. When we got back to the truck, it was about 2 in the afternoon and pretty pleasant outside, so we cut the AC and rolled the windows down, letting the warm California breeze flow through the car. He pulled back onto the road and we were on the way to our next stop.
I didn't want to make Jaime sad again, but I was curious as to what his band was like. I wanted to hear more of their music. I opened my mouth to speak, but closed it again, deciding not to bring it up. He was still smiling from the encounter with the guys at the restaurant, and I didn't want to ruin his happy mood. It had been a while since I'd seen my uncle smile, and I refused to be the reason he stopped.
I looked over at Ella, who was staring out the window in the seat next to me. I watched the way her green eyes reflected the light...the way her dark hair flew around her face...she was the most gorgeous girl I had seen in my life. I scooted a little closer to her and she looked my way. She slightly smiled, revealing her dimples. I smiled back at her, and she returned to looking out the window.
I felt the car slow as Jaime pulled over into the driveway of an overgrown house with a fallen over 'for sale' sign in the front yard. Jaime killed the car and pulled a rusted key out of the glovebox.
"C'mon you two," he said, getting out of the car and motioning for us to follow. We walked through the tall grass and up to the front door. Jaime stuck the key in the lock and pushed the creaky door open. He sighed, and then stepped into the mostly empty house.
I grabbed Ella's hand and she gasped. I led her into the house and we joined Jaime in what appeared to be the living room. He turned around and I released Ella's hand.
"This is the house Mike and Vic grew up in. They lived alone...they lost their parents in a car crash too," he said as he looked around. He walked into the hallway and up the creaky stairs, with us following close behind. He stopped when he got to a room with a large window that overlooked a tree. "This was Mike's room," Jaime sighed. I walked over to the window and studied the tree. I saw what resembled a wooden tree house and a branch that extended to the window ledge. It was practically begging for me to explore.
I looked back at Jaime, who made eye contact and nodded. I opened the window and climbed the branch all the way out and into the tree house. I sat on the shaggy rug in the middle of the floor and closed my eyes, letting my imagination send me into the past again.
