King For A Day

Mike's POV

I ducked and missed the beer bottle that my father had tossed at my head. this was probably the tenth one he'd tossed at me. lucky my slim figure helps me move fast or else I'd likely have brain damage. I hate living here. my dad is always finding some way to abuse me both verbally and physically. what do I do to deserve it? oh nothing but exist.

"Michael I want my goddamn beer get your ugly ass to the store and get me some or so help me I will beat you till you can't stand. you piece of shit." I rolled my eyes and walked over to where he was sitting.

"I need money. unless you expect me to buy it with my looks. and since I'm so hideous I don't think that'll get me very far." I said bitterly. he reached up and backhanded me. I rubbed my cheek where it stung but I didn't cry anymore. tears never seem to escape my eyes. maybe because I've just grown to accept this abuse, maybe because I don't know how to cry anymore. whatever it is I know that it doesn't bother me one bit.

"here's twenty dollars. I want all of my change and if even one cent is missing I will kick your faggot ass! do you understand me?!?" he yelled. I just nodded and snatched the money. he threw a bottle at me and this time he succeeded and it clocked me upside the head but did little damage other then give me a fucking headache.

I stormed out the door and slammed it behind me. I grabbed my skateboard from out the bushes and started skating to the store. on the way there I saw my best friend Alex sitting on the curb in front of his house. he was shaking and crying I walked up and touched his shoulder. he jumped about a foot in the air but relaxed when he saw it was me. he grabbed me and hugged me tight and started sobbing into my chest.

"what's the matter lex? what happened?" he stopped sobbing but tears were still rolling down his rose red cheeks.

"my mom and dad kicked me out again. they know I don't have anywhere to go. where am I supposed to go?" he asked looking at me with wide, innocent, doe eyes. I held him tight.

"we'll do what we always do in situations like this. we will wait for my dad to go into his alcohol induced coma and then you'll sneak into my room and spend the night here until your lame ass parents calm down okay? it'll be alright sweetheart. It always is." he nodded and hugged me tight.

"thanks Mike, I love you so much." he smiled a small sad smile and hugged me.

"no problem. you wanna walk to Benny's with me? I gotta get my old man some beer and then we can go down to Red's and hang out. how's that sound?" he nodded and smiled. that was what we usually did. benny's was the corner store that everyone went to and Red's was the hangout that the gang hung out at. it was a restaurant/bar owned by Red Sanchez and it was the only place that served alcohol to minors.

we started walking to benny's in silence. alex was a quiet kid. he didn't talk much even to me. but it didn't bother me any because I was pretty quiet myself. there were a lot of things alex and I just didn't have to talk about because we just had that unspoken understanding.

I walked into benny's and grabbed a six pack of Budweiser. benny knew my dad so he didn't question me but always gave me a look of pity. my dad was the town drunk and everyone knew that he hit me. no one, however, did anything about it. I paid for the beer and headed back to my house. I walked in and set the beer down on the table next to my dad. he looked at me expectantly and i threw his change on the table.

" i'm going to hang out with alex."

"i don't give a shit." he grunted downing his beer. i mumbled under my breath which earned me another bottle to the back of my head. i stormed out slamming the door behind me. alex was sitting on my stairs waiting for me. we hopped on our skateboards and headed to Red's, the only place i ever felt at home.

when we got there our whole litte gang was waiting for us which consisted of tony perry, jack barakat, and Jaime Preciado. i ordered two beers for me and alex and we just enjoyed hanging out until we could go back to my house.
