Next to Me
Summary
It hit me harder than concrete after jumping from a hundred foot building. It hit me harder than a meteor falling from the farthest depths of space. It hit me harder than I was equipped to handle: and I was able to handle a lot. I had heard just about everything while working as a school psychologist, but never had I heard something that had destroyed my heart this badly.
And that was when I realized that I had done the worst possible thing that I could do. Worse that stealing money from your niece's piggy-bank. Worse than leaving your little sister stranded at her after school band practice even after promising you'd be there - worse than letting your stranded sister walk home in the pouring rain with her snare drum strapped to her back. Worse than borrowing your sister's favorite shirt without telling her, ripping it at a party you weren't supposed to be at, stashing the ripped shirt back into her room, and then later asking to borrow it just to accuse her of ripping the shirt when it was really your fault all along. Worse than the most insensitive thing you could possibly think of.
I had broken the cardinal rule; the one line you don't cross as a best friend.
