Through the Lens

Chapter 28: Happy Endings are Stories that Haven't Ended Yet

A couple of songs in, Vic took the mic off the stand and spoke to the crowd. "How are you my home town, San Diego?!" he yelled out.

The crowd cheered out in response to him, some fans pushing against the barrier that separated them from the stage and me in between them. I continued to snap a few pictures, already knowing what Vic was going to do. He did this every show and brought one lucky fan up on stage to sing to them. Most fans freaked out and burst into tears as he sang to them. It would never get old, seeing the pure happiness on their faces.

Vic walked to the opposite side of the stage taking the mic with him. "I think it's time to bring someone from the audience up on stage."

Instantly everyone in the crowd began to eagerly raise and wave their hands in the air as Vic looked into the sea of fans. "Hmmm... what about over here?" Vic asked as he walked over to my side of the stage. The crowd near me became even louder.

I wanted to take pictures of Vic bringing the fan he chose on stage just like I had every other show. It was a sweet thing he did for the fans and I figured it would be nice to keep that moment alive for them in a photograph.

Vic paced back and forth across the stage a few more times and then finally stopped and pointed. Wait, pointing to me? I turned around to see if he meant someone behind me. I looked back to him and pointed to myself, slightly shocked. He nodded directly at me as he began to wave me up on stage. The crowd behind me cheered in encouragement. I instantly felt my palms become clammy. I wasn't good with being put on the spot, especially in huge crowd situations like this, remembering that I nearly fainted at my high school graduation.

Vic walked over to where I was and held his hands out to me from the stage. I took my camera from around my neck and placed it at the front of the stage, figuring it would be better out of the way for whatever Vic was planning. I reached my hands up to meet his as he curled his fingers around mine and pulled me up on stage as I jumped up. He walked back a bit and pulled up a foldable black stool and motioned for me to sit.

I was still nervous, wondering what had been planned behind my back. I sat in the stool with my hands gripping each other and watching Vic, trying to forget the hundreds of fans were there despite the loud cheering.

Vic walked back up to me with his mic in had as he smiled at me. "What's your name?" he asked as he pointed the mic at me now.

"Raxella..." I answered, my voice slightly shaky.

"Well, Raxella, I'm going to sing you a song now, alright?" Vic had the most devilish looking smirk as he said that. I knew he was planning something.

All I could do was nod and bite my lip almost until it bled.

The song that began to play was all too familiar to me, as I remember spending hours listening to it on repeat - 'Bulletproof Love'. The fans screamed as they recognized the song as well and began to sing along with Vic. He grabbed onto my hands in my lap as he sang those sweet words...

I breathe you in with smoke in the backyard lights
Backyard lights...
We used to laugh until we choked into the wasted nights
Wasted nights...
It was the best time of my life, but now I sleep alone
Sleep alone...
So don't, don't, don't wake me up, 'cause my thrill is gone
Say I'm wrong...

In the sunset turning red behind the smoke,
Forever and alone, yeah!

I kept my hands in Vic's as he looked at me at eye level with that smile of his. Inside I was shrieking and crying. I tried to stay as composed as possible as he sang to me, but I couldn't help it. I felt a tear fall and roll down my cheek, but instantly his hand was there to wipe it away. My inner fangirl slipped.

"Give it up for Raxella!" he said into the mic as I looked out to see the crowd cheering for me.

Suddenly it turned from regular cheering to the fans screeching and pointing behind me as the music stopped. I looked confused but turned myself around on the stool to see a sight that almost made my jaw drop to the floor if it could.

Tony was now close in front of me without his guitar and on one knee... a glistening diamond ring held out to me.

I stood up and immediately almost stumbled backwards into the stool from shock. Now I was definitely going to cry. My hands covered my mouth as I felt my eyes well up in tears as I saw the man I loved proposing to me. The butterflies in my stomach were flying around in full force.

"Raxella... I know we haven't know each other for years or anything... we've known each other for a month. Within that month, the guitarist fell in love with the photographer. Some people will call me crazy but I don't care. My feelings are real and I know yours are too... you show me in the way you say good morning and goodnight... and the way you wish me luck before every show. You know, you mumble the silliest things in your sleep sometimes too, but I love every second of it, and I love you." Tony said as he almost began to choke on his own words. He was nervous too. Glad I wasn't the only one. "Will you please do me the honor of marrying me and let me be yours forever?"

That right there made the tears that were trying so hard to not fall finally roll down my cheeks. I brought my hands away from my face as I nodded to him with no hesitation.

"Only if you'll be mine..." I whispered in return. I had no reason to be nervous anymore

His face lit up instantly as he smiled at my response. His right hand taking my left and slowly slipping the perfectly sized silver band onto my ring finger with ease. His eyes followed and he looked at my hand for a moment with the ring, almost as if he were taking a mental picture in his mind. He began to stand, his eyes following up to meet with mine even though he still towered over me. His hands rested on my cheeks and his fingers wiped away the mess of tears. Everything else faded out as he brought his lips to kiss mine. No sound, so sight... just the feeling of the love that we shared between us.

Over the month we had spent together traveling, joking, crying, kissing... I had captured little bits and pieces of his life through the lens of my camera... and now I was a part of it.

Forever.

I'm so sorry to hear you lost your best friend. I lost mine too. I have a yellow ribbon I always wear in a locket with his picture.

Someone told me once..."Sometimes people come into your life for a certain time. They can stay forever, or they can't. All you know is that they changed you in your heart."

I love this story. It's amazing.
