I'll Paint You Wings

“Alan! Alan” Austin’s voice called out to me. I was sitting in a meeting with the other vampires. Good news was that everyone was around, so I had no fear of anyone sneaking out to go see my gir-I mean, Lily.

“Good to have you back on earth, now as I was saying….” Ghost started back up. I tried my best to pay attention, but it was hard. All I could think of was Lily’s head on my lap and her sleeping form curled up by the fire.

“The feed-subs are getting out of control. Over the past week we had multiple yelling outbreaks, a couple of refusals after Jack and Chris tried to feed, and Jynx still won’t move or eat.” Ghost reported. I perked up at the mention of Jack’s feed-sub.

Luna, the one who was always silent and rarely spoke a word, had explosion against her Master. I may not have known Luna personally, but it was obvious that she always loved Jack. What had caused everyone to be set off?

“I’m really worried about Jynx.” Austin murmured. I glanced over to him. I sat on his left side. He was constantly thinking about that blonde haired girl. Ever since Oli killed her sister, she refused to move. Austin went to feed a couple of times, but from his report, she never looked up or did anything. Her eyes were blank stares at the wall.

Speaking of our new member, Oli was in the library, calmly reading a book. Balz had been checking on him frequently. Oliver Sykes, slowly and grudgingly accepting his fate, was tasked with taking care of the feed-subs next week.

Right now, Jack was in the cells, making sure that the subs weren’t misbehaving.

We continued our conversation a little more about the girls before it started to die off. I bounced nervously in my seat. Austin gave me an odd look.

“So, you want to take this shift now, Balz?” Chris asked. He was referring to the watch shift.

“Can I please take it again this week?” I asked. Nervous flutters tingled my mind. Balz could discover Lily, and I didn’t want her to die.

“Are you sure, Ashby?” Balz questioned. Everyone gave me a funny look. It was common knowledge that I hated to go on watched. Eagerly, I nodded.

“I’m in the middle of a good book.” I made up an excuse and rushed out the door before anyone could argue.

The grey clouds rumbled low in the sky. The waves were crashing viciously in the late autumn storms. It seemed like ever since the uprisings in the cells, the weather had been grumbly and stormy. My feet quickly rushed me up to the tower. I softly slowed and entered Lily’s room. She was sitting at the fireplace, warming her hands over dull embers. I came next to her side and flopped down.

“What are you so smiley about, ginger?” She questioned and bumped my shoulder.

“I just got myself another week of watch.” I chuckled. Lily’s emerald eyes beamed and she rubbed her fingers together in an attempt to keep warm.

“Great! Now you can bring me more books to read.” She laughed like bells ringing in the distance. Overhead, the thunder raged on. A particularly loud crack send the foundations shivering.

“Thunder!” She squeaked and ducked her head down. I squinted in confusion.

“Afraid of a little thunder?” I questioned her. She bobbed her head swiftly and covered her hair with her pale hands.

“Aw, a Witcher’s afraid of a little nature!” I teased. She looked up to me and pouted.

“Shut up!” She growled. I smirked a little. Her hand flew out and punched my chest. I could’ve easily caught it with my fleet reflexes, but I allowed her blow to make contact.

“Oh, the kitten’s got a roar.” I purred silkily. She looked up, but hunched over as another crack of lightning struck someplace on the main land.

“I’m just not fond of thunder.” She pouted. Oh man, I hated when she did that. It made me feel all guilty inside and it looked like I had kicked a little brown kitten into a puddle.

“I’m sorry, kitten. It just surprised me…”

“…that a Witcher’s afraid of thunder? Well we all have our horrors and our demons to fight.” She whispered softly. Her head leaned on my shoulder and I wrapped an arm around her own.

She leapt at the sound of a particularly close cannon of thunder and I held her closer to me. Her eyes squeezed shut and I rubbed her arm. We all need a shoulder to lean on when things are terrifying.

“Aren’t you a little cold?” I whispered into her hair. She nodded. Even though she had a blanket around her, I could tell that goosebumps were starting to pop up.

“I am.”

“I can go get you a blanket from the castle.” I offered and started to stand. She grabbed my hand quickly. I looked at her in surprise. She seemed to have caught herself and blushed deeply.

“P-please, I’ll be fine. Just d-don’t leave.” She stuttered out an apology. I grinned and put my chin on top of her head. She sighed, her warm breath running along my cold arm.

“I won’t, darling.” I murmured to her. She cracked a hint of a smile as I widened my own. You know, Witchers aren’t all that bad.
