Eternal

I Believe, Nothing is What it Seems

Later the next morning, I found myself in the library. Austin had shown me it the night before and this morning I had limped over to the large room.

Shelves upon rugged shelves housed adventure, knowledge, and keys to ancient lore. I ran my fingers over the spines of the old text and thirsted for the words that were bound between the two covers.

After scanning a particular shelf that was adorned with worn covers and tattered edges, I selected a single book about an inch thick and bound in red dyed leather with gold trim. What a beauty!

Al’Wy’En watched curiously from my side. He had never left me since I last night. The endless orbs of brilliant red glimmered as I plunked down in a cushiony seat, large enough for me to cross my legs and get comfortable in. There was a table next to it with a single lamp with an unlit candle cradled in the glass.

It was light though, and the walls murmured with soft light that flickered across pages, wood, and the two residents. I smiled and opened the book, smelling the eternal oldness of the story.

A Tale of Mercy by O’rik Oldstern. What an interesting title.” I muttered to Al’Wy’En. I was now piqued by this title and ancient author. Al’Wy’En whined his agreement. His black face sat on my crossed legs, eyes glancing up to me. I felt the coldness of the nightly mist that emanated off his coat. It ticked my legs and coldly brushed by my skin. I stroked his muzzle with my right hand held the book open with my left hand.

“I feel as if the character’s name is going to be Mercy.” I grumbled. Sometimes I could predict these things. As I started into the first chapter, I found out that this wasn’t the case. Al’Wy’En woofed at me to read aloud.

If two thoughts could be spoken aloud, I assure you that they would never be the same thing. But what if they were? Would one be at the mercy of another’s thoughts now that they knew the other’s? What would happen then? Irik and Fyron found this out all too soon….” I started out. The night hound that sat with his head on my lap closed his eyes in contentment.

Irik and Fyron were nothing alike. Irik was the man at the bar, but no one knew him otherwise. He had a tale to tell, but he never spoke it aloud until someone requested it. Fyron was the maiden no one noticed or cared for. Nothing was special about her. When she walked into on one late night, she discovered Irik sitting in an unoccupied corner. Being the curious youth she was, she sat down across from him. His glassy eyes stared back up at her. He looked pleasantly surprised someone came to see him.

“’So are you here for someone?’ He asked her. Fyron, quiet as ever, shook her head slowly. Irik studied her for a moment before smirking.

“’What do you wish of me, girl?’”

“’A story, sir.’ Her response took him by surprise. Irik hadn’t been asked a story in a while. Now thoughts were forming in his head. He wanted a little game to play.

“’Okay, I’ll give you a little bet. I have many stories, and I will think of one. On the count of three, say one word on what you think my story will be about. I will also say the answer. If they are the same, only then will I tell you a story.’ Irik chuckled, for he knew he would win. There are so many things to speak about, it would be impossible for her to choose the right one. The man loved stumping others as much as he loved a good tale!

“’But there are so many!’ Fyron complained. Irik shook his head and grinned. He held up his fingers, silently counting to three. At once, both spoke.

“’Mercy.’ They both answered at once. Fyron gasped, not believing she had guess correctly. The word has seemed to come to her. Even Irik was shocked.

“’Very well….I will tell you the story of how mercy is spared up on me….’ Irik started….”

“And so lust would take over on love and the sky would fall as if on fire.” A voice whispered through the air behind me. I hadn’t even noticed his presence. Al’Wy’En had his eyes closed in contentment when I read.

I checked the next line. Of course, the words had been lying there as if awaiting the man’s voice.

I shivered a little and looked down at the book, feeling a little guilty. I guess I should’ve asked before I had taken a book or even come down here!

“I’m s-sorry, sir. I w-was j-just reading to A-Al’Wy’En.” I stuttered quickly. His had patted my shoulder reassuringly.

“I don’t mind, little one. You have a beautiful voice. Al’Wy’En is almost asleep.” He chuckled, soothing my frazzled nerves.

“Thank you.” I murmured, still staring at the yellowed page clasped between my fingers. Al’Wy’En was awake now, the night hound staring at the vampire behind me.

“I see you have chosen A Tale of Mercy. It’s a fine book, is it not?” Austin came around into view, gently running a pale finger along the gold words.

“Oh yes! I’ve fallen in love with the story already.” I smiled a little, glancing down at the tale.

“Now tell me, why do you think Irik want to tease Fyron with a game?” He questioned me, golden eyes sparkling. I wracked my brain for an idea.

“Because he wanted to keep Fyron guessing. I think Irik was lonely in the corner and if he could frustrate Fyron with a guess, she would keep coming back to guess more and more until she got a story out of him.” I finally concluded. Austin smiled and ruffled Al’Wy’En’s fur absent mindedly before turning to a single book. His hands picked it off the wood shelf and thumbed through the sheets.

“I would suggest reading this book when you’re done. It might give you a little…insight.” He suggested, handing the purple cover to me. It was thin, but in blood red letters was printed, The Elite Witcher: A Guide to Bringing Justice. I cringed a little, thinking of Toltek back in the village.

Out of curiosity, I read the first few sentences.

Black magic is the ultimate evil. Be wary of all signs of black magic and strike at any point. The best way of attack is by surprise. The demons will never see a knife aimed at their back if they’re not expecting it.

I gulped. Al’Wy’En growled lightly. I set it aside and attempted to clear my thoughts. My eyes scanned The Tale of Mercy and started off reading where I had left off.

I guess a Witcher attack could happen at any time. I sure hoped it wouldn’t happen now.
