Now Let Me Tell You About the Good Life

Dying is a horrible, no good, very bad experience. Seriously.

It’s like you’re being dropped from an incredible height and just can’t stop falling. There are no walls to catch yourself on, there’s nothing tethered to you to halt the rapid descent, there’s no one to hear your screams.

So that’s why, when I stopped falling, I was a little curious as to why. Something cold and liquid tainted my mouth, touching my tongue and making me gag. Suddenly, I was just enveloped in darkness, like I had before, but I felt like I was standing still. I couldn’t move or do anything. It was a little weird.

When I opened my eyes, that’s when I felt blinded. There were lights, dim but brilliant compared to the darkness I had been used to. I felt silky sheet cover my thin body and things attached to my legs. I didn’t move for a moment, frozen in the awe of the style of the room.

But when I saw the night hound in the corner of the room, looking vicious even as it slept, I scrambled up in the large bed.

“Shh…It’s okay.” A voice cooed to me. I had a full on panic attack as the floods of memories haunted my thoughts. Alex, the attack, everything….

I blinked away the blinding white spots as Austin curled his arms around my shoulder. I leaned into his chest, dazed from everything that’s happened.

“Are you feeling alright?” He asked, sounding relieved that I was awake. I nodded.

“Yes, sir.” I responded softly. He nodded and leaned against the pillows, pulling me with him. The sour taste was still left in my mouth.

“Good. You’ll be healed in a few days.”

“But Master Carlile, I thought this would take a few weeks?” I asked, looking down at my broken legs. One time a guard broken his legs on duty in the town. It took him three weeks to recover, and he was still limping by the time he was healed.

“No, you lost a lot of blood. To save you, you had to swallow a few drops of vampire blood. Surprisingly, it has healing effects as well.” He cracked a smile down at me. I nodded and closed my eyes again, feeling the waves of tiredness swoop through me.

“Well, thank you.” I yawned. He chuckled.

“I couldn’t lose you, darling.” He murmured, kissing my head. He hummed in pleasure as I started to drift off again.

The night hound in the corner snored on.

I was alive.

What other hell would I be put through?
