Hidden in Plain Sight

Chapter 33

*Third person*

In the latest news, San Diego police have raided a home and arrested a woman. Carly Fox was arrested at 11:45 last night and taken to the San Diego police station where she was charged with the murder of local woman Jessica Hatterson. Jessica Hatterson was murdered seven months ago in local club 'Wolf' and what caused her death defied scientists and doctors and even autopsy.

The case was nearly closed before Dr Peter Benedict made the gruelling discovery of Miss Hatterson's death. Dr Benedict, head of autopsy, had taken various samples of the victim before she was laid to rest. Her death remained a complete mystery, up until now.

"The whole case stumped me. In my 40 years of autopsy, I have not seen anyone just die. There was always a cause of death even if it was small. The victim showed absolutely no signs of death, only that her heart had stopped beating" Dr Benedict reports.

---

Carly sat in her cell, her eyes black and red and hair a mess. Hand cuffs held her wrists close together. She wasn't meant to be here. She didn't murder anyone. She was falsely accused, mixed up with someone else. She couldn't handle murdering someone. She couldn't cope with the physical aspect of murdering let alone the aftermath. She's a kind hearted person, she is not the murderer.

As she lay curled up with her head in her knees, Carly heard someone walking down the halls. Two people. She looked up and a police officer came through the door, Jaime was close behind. Carly bolted from her place on the cold cement wall and slammed into the cell wall.

"Jaime! Jaime! You have to get me out of here. I didn't do it! I didn't do it! Carly cried as hard as she could.

Jaime held her hands through the bars. "Carly babe. I'm trying my best to get you out of here but they just won't let me. They all say the evidence is stacked up against you but I refuse to believe it. Carly you're a beautiful woman. I know you didn't hurt Jessica. You couldn't hurt anyone. I'm trying my best"

His soothing words made Carly feel just a slight bit better. She held his hands tight as she stood there crying. Their heads were connected through the bars and she just cried. Occasionally she would remind him that she didn't do it. And he believes her. He still loved her.

Jaime was stuck in the most emotional turmoil ever. It was horrible. How could this ever happen. His current lover was arrested over the murder of his late lover. How could anyone ever comprehend this. Jaime sure couldn't. Especially when the case has been named the Murder of the Decade.

When police raided Carly's home he did everything he could to defend her, to take her back, to convince them that they had made a mistake. He even tried to tell them they had the wrong house but it was a failure. He pulled on her body, prying her from the police for just a second. He had her for just that last second, but she was taken back when another police officer had taken ahold of him.

The police officer held him down and watched helplessly as they carried Carly away in handcuffs to the police car. She screamed for his help, to help her, to save her but he just couldn't. The officer was just too strong. To hear her struggling like that and to see them taking her away from him broke Jaime into pieces. Beneath the officer, he just broke.

He lay on the lawn crying to the officer above that they had it all wrong. Carly wasn't the murderer. When he looked up to the officer, he could see just a small hint of sympathy in this dark night. Before the officer left, he could have swore the officer spoke to him. He could have swore that the officer had said to him 'I hope it's not either'.

Jaime was helped to is feet, where he was met with another officer. This officer was a Crime Scene Investigator official. Just like the guys in Carly's favourite crime shows.

"Hi Mr Preciado, I'm officer Briggs. Now I know you are very shaken up at the moment, let me take you over to the truck and get you calmed down" he spoke in a deep voice. Jaime was that shocked that he just nodded. He followed the officer to the van where they gave him a blanket and a cold drink.

"Mr. Preciado, do you mind if I ask you a few questions?" Jaime shook his head. "You are in a relationship with this woman correct?" Again, he nodded.

"Now you and miss fox work together down at Fearless Records?" Again he nodded.

"Sir, I'm going to need you to speak please. Now, is there anyone else you work with that works with miss fox?"

Jaime became scared. He didn't want to get his friends involved in this. This had nothing to do with them. Well it did but he didn't want to get them into mess. But he had to. He did was was right.

"Yeah, um, Victor and Michael Fuentes, they're both brothers, and Tony Perry. They're my band" he answered back. His heart was throbbing at the cage of his chest. His mind was sweating from the tension. He felt so bad for mentioning they're names. But they're gonna help the police swear Carly's innocence right? Yeah, they're gonna help.

"Would you have a contact number I would be able to reach them on?" Jaime answered them and gave them their numbers.

"And if it helps, they all have girlfriends who were close friends of Carly's. Not sure of that helps at all" he looks down. Guilt has taken over. He didn't need to mention their names. But in the mindset that they'll help prove Carly's innocence he said them.

"Thank you Mr Preciado, I know how hard this is for you. Now, I just need one more thing from you. Is there any other information that you could give me about Miss Fox?" Officer Biggs had asked politely.

"Wouldn't you have any other information? I mean, you're a freaking investigator you should have all this freaking information to make an arrest" Jaime burst. It was just a wave of anguish. He was terrified, he was scared, he was sad, he was mad. He just had to burst.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean for that, but seriously. You should know all that to make an arrest. You should know all her background information right?" Jaime asked again, but more hushed.

"We only have the information from the murder case. Now is there anything you could tell us?"

Jaime sat there thinking. He thought of so much he could say about her. The fact that she lived in Baltimore for years before moving here, or the fact that she isn't American, she's Australian. She thought of Jack and Alex in particular, they know her almost better than herself. What about Carly's brothers. One is a navy officer and the other is a lawyer. Surely they could help.

But Jaime didn't say much. He just told the officer that she was born in Australia, which later he would find out that it was the worst possible thing to say.

Split it!!

If separating it into 2 parts makes the story have a better ending than I'm all for it. I don't mind waiting a little longer
