The Forgotten Fuentes

Roses Aren't Always Red

Lilly's POV~

I reread the text and looked up, searching the cafe frantically. Jack must've noticed my panicky actions, because he put his warm hand on mine which was clammy and shaking slightly. "What's going on, Lil? I haven't known you long but I can definitely tell you're freaking out about something. So what's wrong?" he asked, catching and holding eye contact with me. "N-nothing, everything's f-fine," I stammered, breaking the stare and continuing to scan the small dining area.
I sucked in a breath when I locked eyes with a shocked-looking Vic and a disappointed Alli. Jack followed my gaze and upon seeing Vic, smiled and waved him over. Vic turned to Alli and said something, then pecked her lips and she went to find a table while Vic came our direction. I looked at the floor as he approached.
"Hey Vic!" Jack greeted cheerfully. They know each other? Since when? "Hi, Jack. Lillian, what on Earth are you doing?" Vic replied, and I could feel his stare burning into the back of my neck as I continued to look down. "I can explain," I started, looking up at him. He nodded for me to continue and I gulped.
"What's going on?" Jack asked, looking between the two of us. "Unless....Vic, this isn't....Lilly please tell me you're not his brother's girlfriend?" he asked, turning his attention towards me. My face turned red and I looked down again. "Not as of earlier today..." I muttered, and Jack sighed. "Oh. Erm, maybe I should just go for now....you know my number if you need me..." he said, excusing himself and quickly walking out the door.
Vic kept staring at me and I snapped. "What Vic?! It's not like I was cheating on him!" I exclaimed, my voice ringing through the mostly empty cafe. He sighed. "Lilly..." he said, shaking his head and looking away. Alli walked up behind him. "Lilly he meant it. Mike loves you." she said, sliding into the booth across from me. I clenched my teeth, Alli was the last person I wanted involved in this.
"Don't you think I fucking know that? He loves me and don't you think I feel the same way? I just don't want to hurt that bad! If that baby's his, I'll have to live with the pain either until the kid's 18 or until he leaves me for Alysha, and I just can't handle it okay?! I need other people in my life, I need a back-up plan! And I'd appreciate it if you'd just let me make my own decisions about this stuff! It's my relationship, and so far all you've done is cause problems by being overprotective! Ariella fucking Boyde you are NOT my mother! Just please let me do this on my own! I love him and I have conflict, but conflict is something I'm going to have to resolve on my own sooner or later. I just prefer it to be before it could really fuck my life up," I screamed, climbing out of the booth and running out the exit door.
My face was red and tears were welling up, but I held them back and started the walk home, since Jack was how I got here. As I was walking home, I decided to stop and check the voicemail Mike had left me. I needed to hear his voice, even if it was the cause of most of my problems at the moment. I stopped and sat on a bench in a local park and pulled out my phone, dialing my voicemail. I listened intently to the recording of his soothing voice, all the way to the breaking silence at the end. I got off of the bench, wiping the tears from my eyes, and walked to the large oak tree in the center of the park.
I climbed the tree to find a bundle of white roses laying on a branch with a slip of paper that had my name written on it. I picked up the delicate flowers and carefully climbed down, just in time to see a tall figure stalking off in the direction of the cafe. I guess Vic had to tell Mike. Or maybe it was Alli. Who knows?
I climbed back up and sat on the branch I found the bouquet on and noticed that each of the roses had a small slip of paper tied to them with a rubber band. Curious, I looked on the back of the paper with my name on it and sure enough, there was an explanation.
Dear Lilly,
Roses aren't always red,
The pure white are best.
Tied to each flower
Two dozen reasons why
I'll love you forever

Till the day we, together, lay to rest.
~Mike
I smiled and pulled one of the tiny fragments from a rose, reading it over and over.
"Every time our eyes meet, even if it's a sweeping glance, I feel a force greater than gravity itself holding us together."
I carefully folded up the small, heart-shaped paper and put it in the locket Mike had gotten me shortly before he went on tour. I took the roses and carefully climbed down again, making my way back towards the cafe. I had to find Mike and try and fix the broken relationship, because now I know one thing; even if he hurts me, I'm always going to end up going back to him. I can't see myself any other way. I love him and he needs to know it.
