These Are the Memories Between Us, Let Go and Let Live Again

It was midnight, but I didn’t mind waiting. My ride would be here at any moment. I was more than excited and could barely contain it. I had my entire trip planned out and had room to spare! I could hold my promise to everybody.

The train rolled up and I ducked behind a bush. Even in the dark, the car I was looking for stood out. As I walked stealthily towards the doors, I ran my hand over the faint outline of the cross.

Lifting my hand, I knocked on the iron doors.

The metal barrier rolled back an inch before being thrown wide. A set of hands pulled me in and slammed the door closed with a click of the lock. The lanterns illuminated two faces.

“Kynder!” Hope squeezed the air out of my lungs in excitement. Not only did I need to ride this train to get to the Price, Utah stop, but I got to seem my old friends! As soon as Hope let me go, Anarchy wrapped me in a tight hug-which was unusual for him. He was normal the quiet boy who only ever gave a hug to Amity.

“Hi, Anarchy.” I wrapped my arms around his broad shoulders, returning the gesture.

“We missed you bunches, Kyn.” He mumbled into my hair. I laughed and let go. He pulled a box down for me to sit on next to him.

“So how have the rails been?” I asked the two passengers. The wheels on the train squeaked to life as the engine roared. The horn honked twice and we started our journey out of the station.

“Lonesome! Now a days, it’s just me and Anarchy. We get a few people here and there, but we’ve started our journey in the low season. During the winter, the train makes its rounds, but not many people hop aboard.” Hope shrugged. The nip in the air was getting stronger by the day. Fall in Colorado turns to winter fairly early.

“Do you visit Quinn very often?” I asked her. Hope laughed and shook her head at the memory. The thin strands of hair tumbled in a waterfall of grey. Her bony fingers wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.

“More often than I used to! Anarchy and I go out every few weeks or so to meet Quinn and old Ire for a couple of days. It’s better than nothing! We each have our own trains to take care of, but we manage to meet every so often.” Hope chuckled. Anarchy silently bobbed his head in agreement. I nudged his shoulder playfully. He chuckled and bumped me back.

“So how are the alley runners? Us iron riders don’t get a chance to really head into the city.” He asked in his usual quiet voice. I thought for a moment.

“Well, I guess their good. I just took my leave of the city, but left them in good hands.” Anarchy raised an eyebrow at this statement.

“You left the city? Like, permanently?” He questioned. I waved my hand in a maybe gesture. It was a sort of permanent arrangement, possibly.

“I’ll be back to visit there and Brecks said he I would always be an alley runner in Denver, but I’m moving on to better things.” I gave a sly wink. He took the hint, but Hope was lost.

“It means she’ll be joining us for the next four days until our stop in Price. She’ll be moving on after that, but you’ll visit us, right?” Anarchy laughed. I nodded. How could I ever leave my friends?

“Of course!” I affirmed. Hope yawned, concluding our conversation. She pushed some jackets over to me before settling down on her own bed of soft fabrics. Anarchy threw me a couple other blankets before laying down. I took their lead and settled in my own little nest of warm comfort.

As I closed my eyes, a finger poked my cheek. I grumbled and threw my arms over my head, muttering for Anarchy to stop bugging me.

“You’re adorable.” He laughed.

“So you didn’t see me throw someone out of a window?”

“You threw someone out of a window?” Anarchy asked, surprise ringing out. Even Hope turned around from her curled form to listen in as I explained my story. Anarchy whistled a low note.

“Tough.” He stated. I nodded and closed my eyes, nestled between a box and Anarchy. As I fell asleep, I felt safe and secure.

Four days later, we were about to pull into the station of Price. I yawned as my sleepy eyes blinked open. Anarchy was poking my shoulder as I woke up.

“Hey, sleepy eyes. We’re nearly here!” Anarchy whispered, continuing to shake me awake. I swatted his hands away and yawned.

“Be quiet, Price! I’ll get up when we reach Anarchy.” I muttered, brain still not functioning quiet right.

“Um, don’t you mean that the other way around?”

“Same difference.” As Anarchy finally shook me awake, I sat up as the train started to screech to a halt. I gritted my teeth against the sound. Hope and Anarchy seemed to be unaffected. I pulled my pack out from on top of a box and slung it over my shoulders. The train rumbled to a halt as the other two people came and wished me good luck.

“So where are you headed off to now?” Hope asked me cheerily. No matter what, she seemed to always be in a good mood. It was something I admired about her. Anarchy unlocked the doors and peeked outside to make sure it was safe.

“To Isolation.” I laughed at her confused expression.

“It’s eight miles south of Price.” It took her a moment, but then she caught on. Anarchy pulled open the doors as the early morning light started to barely illuminate the great Utah desert. Out in the distance beyond the few buildings that made up Price was a winding road. It was almost as if I could see the town past it.

“Good luck on your journey, Kynder!” Anarchy wished me as I stepped out. Waving farewell, I heard the doors shut behind me as I booked it past the train yard and into town.

As soon as I hit the road, I slowed my pace and worked my way south. Last time I was here, I was on the run and in constant fear and pain. Now was the time I got to enjoy the beautiful scenery and rock formations out west. This time, I was heading south.

Without my injuries holding me back, it took me an hour and a half to walk into Isolation. A few cars passed me, but not many were traveling at six in the morning. The gas station, convenience store, and tire repairs (and general repairs) lights were just starting to flicker on.

After passing the church, I walked by the general store and peeked inside. Gerard and Mikey were sitting behind the counter, talking. I took a quick look inside, and the familiar red head turned towards me. With wide eyes, he grinned and waved.

I smiled back as the brothers tried to wave me in. I shook my head. Even though my schedule was flexible, I still had to try to make it on time. Pointing towards a road half a mile out of town, I mouthed two words. Gerard and Mikey caught on, gave me the thumbs up, and went back to talking.

Once again, I started walking.

My feet never hurt. I used to have to run every Sunday for about six miles. I was used to it. Besides, my black converse had held up this long and weren’t about to give out on the side of the road! A familiar green sign stood above me as I stopped.

Ricksin Road. The dead end at the edge of Isolation.

“I wonder if they’ll make me waffles.” I muttered to myself. I was in a good mood and was having an odd craving of waffles. Maybe they had chocolate and whip cream?

As I started down the bumpy dirt road, I saw the sun peek over the eastern horizon. It must’ve been about seven or so, but I didn’t have a watch to tell the time. Oh well, that familiar house at the end of the long road must have one.

I grinned ear to ear.

I crept up the porch steps as quietly as possible and stood in front of the door. Right before I knocked, I peeked in the window. Part of the cream colored blinds were pulled open. I saw two figures sitting on the couch in their pajama bottoms and shirts.

Only they would be up so early in the morning, watching, of course, Spongebob.

“Why are we watching this again?” A certain brown eyed, light brown haired man with a rose tattoo on his hand asked. He sat at the far end of the leather couch because a black and blonde haired man stretched out on the rest. His head was resting in the light haired man’s lap.

“Shh! This was the only thing on that’s actually good!”

I repressed bursting out into laughter. They were so cute together.

I felt bad interrupting their cartoon watching session, but I knocked three times on the red wood door. The one sitting on the far end looked up. I patiently waited behind the closed door. Soft footsteps padded to unlock the bolts before opening it.

I barely got a word out before Jack Barakat engulfed me in a hug and spun me around. I couldn’t tell if he was sobbing, laughing, or a combination of both. Alex Gaskarth sandwiched me in between as we all hugged and cried and laughed at the same time.

“We missed you so much!” Jack cried and laughed. I clung to his neck for fear of being dropped. He was certainly strong, even for just waking me up.

“I missed you to, Jacky.” I teased. I tried to gasp for breath, but failed and winced as Jack held me tight, as if I was going to run away again.

“Barakat, let her go. You’re crushing the life out of her.” Alex pried Jack’s arms off me and gave me his own hug. I laughed as the two manly men wiped tears off their eyes. Squidward yelled as the absorbent sponge in the background.

“Why don’t we watch some cartoons?” I suggested. Both boys agreed happily and we all curled into the couch in a mess of arms and legs. Alex had managed to claim more real estate on the cushions as Jack curled up on his lap and I somehow managed to be squished between the two.

After the episode was over, Alex left to go make breakfast. Jack flipped through channels absent mindedly until he started asking how I was, what I had been doing for the past couple of months, and where I was going.

“What do you want for breakfast?” Gaskarth asked from the kitchen.

“WAFFLES!” Jack and I yelled at the same time. He gave me one look, like he had gained a whole new sense of respect for me.

“Okay, okay!” Alex held his hands in surrender. While the batter for the fluffy waffles was rising, I answered all of Jack’s questions and Alex listened in. Both threw their comments in at the appropriate times.

“So were you guys up to?” I Jack smiled slyly.

“Do you want to tell her?” Jack asked his best friend. Alex nodded, flipping the waffle maker over.

“We’ve continued to do what we’ve always been doing: buying the girls and then releasing them so they could escape back to their respected cities. So far, we managed to help out twenty or so people.” Jack grinned. That was amazing! Sure, they hadn’t pulled away from the market completely, but this wasn’t bad at all! They were doing something other than just keeping us as slaves.

“Well aren’t you good Samaritans.” I teased. Jack blushed. Alex called for breakfast. I managed to try to roll over and get off the couch before Jack scooped me up. I clung to his back like a sloth and got a piggy back ride all ten feet to the table.

“Grab the plates!” Jack laughed as he held my legs against him. Alex handed me to two plates and we went to the small island in the kitchen. I was set down and handed one waffle to Jack who thanked me and sat next to Alex.

“Did you get whip cream? PLEASE TELL ME YOU DID!” Jack cried in exasperation as he looked about the table. I could only watch as Alex leaped from his spot at the sight of Jack’s wild, obsessed eyes. Both men scrambled for the fridge. I watched silently from the sidelines as Alex desperately attempted to block Jack’s entrance to the fridge. Jack collapsed in Alex’s arms like a small child and hung there. Alex wrapped his strong arms around Jack and tried to guide him back, but Jack still wanted that white and blue bottle of heaven in a spray form.

“Pwease?” He begged. Alex shook his head.

“No! You go insane over that stuff!” Alex shunned him. Jack dropped his head and pouted. The two didn’t notice as I slid around them and quietly opened the door. I spotted the cream on the second to the top shelf, grabbed it and returned to my seat.

Jack perked up as I shook the can a couple of times and sprayed it. His eyes went wide as I rotated my wrist and made a perfect spiral on my golden waffle. It was all over after that.

Two minutes later, we were all back at our seats. I had a nice two inch tower of whipped cream on my waffle. Jack had a ten inch tower.

Needless to say, Jack loved whipped cream.

“So how long do you want to stay? We’re open for….quite a while. Nothing’s really going on.” Jack said through a mouth full of white cream.

“Just until tomorrow evening. I have to either walk or get a ride to Moab to catch the train. I have some people there waiting for me.” I responded thoughtfully. I couldn’t miss that train!

“Oh, we can drive you!” Alex offered. Jack nodded happily, still attempting to swallow his mouthful. It was pretty funny to watch.

“Have you told Awtin?” Jack finally managed to swallow. Awtin? Oh, Austin!

“No….” I looked away. Alex lunged for the phone, but I was quicker. I jumped on his back and clung to him.

“NO WAIT!” I yelled as Jack made a mad dash for the phone. He dialed in the number and I heard it start to buzz.

“LET ME EXPLAIN! It’s a surprise!” I hissed to him. Jack’s eyes went wide as he caught on to what I was trying to do.

“Hello?” Austin’s voice asked over the line. He sounded tired and exhausted.

“Hi, it’s Jack.” Alex bolted for the phone with me on his back. I held my breath, waiting to see what he was going to do.

“Hey, what’s up?” Aus asked.

“I JUST WANTED TO CALL AND SAY I LOVE YOU!” Jack yelled into the phone before slamming it down into the cradle. I both was relieved and found it funny.

“Thanks.” I let out a big exhale in ease as a panic was about to be averted.

“So why haven’t you told Austin yet?” Alex asked me as I crawled off his back. He crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow.

“Yeah. I hope you know he’s been like, panicking with worry over you for the past few months.” Jack reprimanded. I sighed and knew I would have to explain sooner or later.

“Well, I was left the city, kind of permanently.” I started off. Both of their jaws dropped.

“What?!” They shrieked together. I nodded and rubbed my forehead wearily.

“Well, I’ll be visiting of course, but I’m not really “in charge” anymore. I announced my departure because I’m coming around and visiting Hope, Anarchy, you guys, the Motionless crew, Quinn, Iren, and Austin.” I explained. Jack and Alex looked for me to explain more.

“So I assume you’ve already visited Anarchy and Hope to get here?” Alex asked. I nodded.

“Now I’m going to visit the others. After that, I’ll be visiting Austin and the house. As much as I’d love to move in right away, I want to check in and see how the progress with moving out of the black market business is going.” I continued. Alex and Jack sighed in relief.

“Okay, that makes more sense.” Both agreed. I nodded.

“Well, I was planning on it being a surprise, so I can’t have you ruining it!” I prodded Jack and he smiled.

“I won’t don’t worry.” He laughed. After our little conversation, we spent the rest of the day goofing off and having fun. At about noon, we drove into town to meet Oli, Gerard, Jordan, and Mikey and have lunch together. After the little time at lunch, the three of us went back to the house and watched movies, played extreme monopoly/hide and seek combination and fell asleep to Wall-E, the move that Jack chose.

The two boys were like super-sized children.

Alex fell asleep curled up in Jack’s arms and I fell asleep tucked somewhere between the two with Jack’s arm around me.

Every day of my journey back to Austin had been getting better and better.
