Shattered

Move Like A Fugitive Tonight

Two Months Later….

Monday morning, and I was off running again. It was freedom, it was bliss, and it was my life. Ever since being rescued from Miles for the second time, I had found a new place, gotten back my job as a news runner, and I’ve been able to help many people.

The best part of it was that since my return, five girls had escaped and made it back to Denver. Two came from Wyoming, one older woman came from North Dakota, and one from California, and the last teen that returned came all the way from New York!

We were having a celebration tonight for their safe return.

As I slowed to a halt, I took my key and opened the news container. Carefully stacking the set of newspapers I was given to stock in the red bin, I placed them in there and carefully closed the container. Sliding the key into the lock, I clicked it shut.

Today was a good day!

My job usually consisted of going into the office on Sundays, picking up my stacks, then running a total of about six miles between stations to restock. I got paid about twenty five dollars for each week. It wasn’t bad at all! I had already collected a nice sum of money to deposit in the bank and keep safe.

Right now, I was heading back to my house. It was right by the park where we usually met at. Just like my old home, it had been a small shop that had been abandoned at the edge of town. The floor boards creaked and part of the wall was collapsing in, but it would suffice as a house.

My collection was stashed in a small drawer in the back room. There were no beds, no chairs or couches. Instead, I had collected blankets and used them as a mattress. Normally, I would go and lounge in the back office, laying on the empty floorboards and looking through spare magazines that I had collected through the garbage. It was petty entertainment, but it was better than nothing.

Instead, I walked over to the drawer and pulled out the shaky top box. Inside, I shuffled some papers, clinic card, and pain pills around to get to the slip of paper I was looking for. It was small and yellowed over the time it had spent in the drawer, but it had the numbers I needed.

Looking around, I knew I wouldn’t see this room for a while.

The beanie I had stolen four or five months ago had grown frayed around the edges. It still kept me warm, so I kept it close. It was the same with my black jacket. Now that September had rolled around, I wore it more and more often.

Closing that drawer, I opened up the one underneath and grabbed spare change. I always kept about ten with me. It was all I could afford to hold at one moment. Moving out of the dusty room, I closed the door behind me and snuck out the back entrance. I had a destination in mind.

Ten minutes later, I was panting from all the running and moving around I had done today. The scrap of paper was still tightly clenched in my fist and the money in my pocket. I opened up the door to the library I stood in front of and quietly closed the door. Inside, a faint clicking of a laptop was heard in the corner. Faint murmurs swelled like the tide from different rows of books. The library wasn’t big, but it served me well. I enjoyed it here and knew the old ladies that worked behind the desk.

“Can I use the phone?” I asked the woman in the front. She smiled and nodded, pointing to the payphone in the back corner. I walked over and deposited a few quarters. This would have to be quick.

After punching in the buttons, I held the phone to my ear, tapping my foot impatiently. Although I didn’t require them to be there, I sure hope I wasn’t alone!

“Chris Motionless, singer of Motionless in White and badass number one here. Who’s speaking?” A gruff voice asked from the other side.

“Badass number one? Well that’s a new titled.” I laughed quietly. A few people stared up from searching for books.

“Um, who is this?” Chris asked once again, this time his voice held a note of recognition. A few others were heard in the background.

“Kynder, dummy!” I couldn’t help but smile.

“KYNDER!” Seven voices screeched at once. I had to hold my hand over the receiving end of the line as the librarian raised an eyebrow.

I’m sorry! I mouthed to her. She harrumphed and went back to reading her book behind the counter.

“Where are you?”

“How have you been?”

“I am a badass, thank you very much!”

“You’ve been gone for so long!” The voices chorused all at the same time. I leaned against the wall, looking at how much time I had left. I had about two minutes.

“Guys, I’m at a payphone and don’t have much time. Are you either on the train or planning on boarding soon? As in, a couple of days?” I asked quickly. The seconds were ticking by sooner than expected.

“We’re on right now and IREN YOU DIRTY CHEATER!” Quinn screeched in the background. They must’ve been playing an early game of Gin Rummy.

“What did you need? Do you need us down there?” Ghost asked, panicking on the sidelines.

“Don’t worry Ghost, she has the Balz to take on anything!” Ryan chuckled.

“Another Balz pun, seriously?” Balz grumped in the background. I smiled at the old humor.

“No, I don’t need you down there. I just wanted to check in.” I smiled. Chris sighed in relief. I didn’t have much time left.

“Well it was good talking to you, Kyn!” Ricky called from the back.

“Yeah. My time’s up, so I’ll talk to you real soon!” I chuckled and hung up before they could ask any more question. As soon as I hung up, I stashed the piece of paper with Chris’s number on it in my pocket with the money. Sliding away from the booth, I went to an open computer and pulled up Google. I found a website with schedules for the train plus a couple of others. I picked up an old pen and wrote them on my arm.

I would have to leave soon after the party!

After finishing up in the library, I headed back home to pack my small collection of items. I had bought a new plain black shirt along the way. As soon as I got home, I changed into my new shirt and tossed the ragged old one. Once I got dressed in my black shoes, shirt, jeans, jacket, and beanie, I pulled out my grey bag. The pain pills, Austin’s letter, Chris’s number, money, and water bottle all were tossed in the pack. I looked around at my small abode and yawned.

A nap was required.

Six hours later, I woke up and took one last look around. I might be coming back, I might not. Who knew? After all that had happened in just this past year alone, I went where the wind blew me.

The lights flickered, an electrical wave goodbye as I exited the old building, shutting the door behind me. There was a party to attend in the park. It was only ten at night, but the voices wavered through the air. I followed the sound and found myself amidst a group of thirty five alley runners. The five who had returned were greeted with a toast, just as I walked in. Everyone raised their bottle of water, beer can, or assorted drinks as the five were welcomed home. Everyone was happy that the lost were found once again.

I stood, clutching the strings of my bag at the edge of the crowd. Brecker was at the front, the “host” of the party. He spotted me and gestured me to join him. We had already planned this, already talked about it. Together, we had come to a decision and were ready for this moment.

“And now for a word from Kynder!” He gave a slight nod and stepped to the side. I looked at the eyes that were locked on my every word.

“We’re very happy that you’ve found your way home. As one of the girls also taken, I know the struggles you’ve gone through. I can empathize with you the struggles of escaping. We welcome you back as alley runners in your full title.” I started out. The somber girls nodded their heads and gave me an appreciative smile.

“With this good news comes the bad news. Brecker and I have been talking recently. Ever since Wreckers death, the beloved and looked up to alley runner in this community, I had stepped up to help with the jobs he left behind.” Many members bowed their heads in respect.

“But I am not Wrecks. I cannot fulfill the hole he left. I will be leaving my place here in Denver to go to new adventures. Brecker will fill my spot when I leave.” I announced my departure and many members looked up sadly, dejected that I was leaving my position.

“Will you be back?” Someone cried from the left edge. I laughed weakly and nodded.

“Just because I leave for a while doesn’t mean I am gone for good. I will be visiting as often as I can, so this isn’t the last you will see of me! I’ll drop by to see how my city is doing.” I grinned with the crowd. Brecks stepped up next to me. The old man held his hands up for silence.

“Kynder might be gone for a short period of time, but we will welcome her back as a fellow alley runner as soon as she steps foot back here.” Brecks announced. The crowd cheered loudly and clapped.

“For now, I will leave you with Wrecks last words.” I looked to the sky as the silence fell upon the park, waiting to hear what Wrecks said last.

“I might be older than dirt, but I sure as hell can run faster than you!” The entire crowd exploded with cheers, bellowing laughs, and whoops as I waved to the audience. This would be the last time I would see the beautiful city for a while. I turned to leave, going to the rail yard.

“Bye, Kynder! You’ll be missed!” Brecks called to me. A melody of farewells and so longs joined it. I waved to my group of alley runners below me before walking off. I couldn’t stop smiling. Even the moon seemed happier.
