Shattered

You Can't Stop Me!

I looked down at my chest where the small knife handle was protruding. The blade wasn’t too long, but I couldn’t understand how I was still alive. Sure, it hurt badly, but I think the poker incident was worse. This was just a small metal blade, not a molten hot poker.

Then it hit me. No pun intended.

Oh, my surgery! The surgery had saved my life, or what had been put in my chest saved my life!

Miles’s jaw dropped twenty feet as I grasped the metal grip and pulled it out, letting a small gasp of pain. Austin, Alan, Ghost, Quinn, and Alex all had their eyes wide in amazement. Someone please remind me, why wasn’t I dead yet? I turned to face my attacker.

“W-why….? You’re supposed to be dead!” He stuttered and fumbled for the words. I could only smile, even though the flames of pain attacked my flesh. The room was dead quiet. He couldn’t process how a hit that was supposed to pierce my stomach and kill me slowly and painfully wasn’t fatal.

“Metal plate….bastard.” I grunted and drove the knife into his shoulder. Miles screamed a piercing howl that could be heard cities away. He stumbled past the bed to the window, sliding against the glass and leaving smears of blood. I took a few shaky steps after him and stood as the whites of his eyes rolled into his head.

“This is for the girls who you’ve abused.” I muttered, the breath I had regained slowly filling my lungs. I was worn out….but never too tired for vengeance. Gasping his arms, I pulled him towards me and then slammed him into the glass so hard that it shattered and dropped to the earth below. Although it was only a five foot drop, there was a window well to a cellar area that made the five feet into ten.

“Please, mercy!” He whispered through the blood that poured out of his busted lip.

“And this is for taking me from my family.” I forced out each word with the energy I had left. He went limp in my arms as I tossed him out the window sill.

He dropped….

And dropped…

And dropped….

Until I heard the gut twisting crash….

And then I dropped to the floor, drained of energy and loosing blood rapidly. My legs had gone numb from the lack of oxygen and energy. My brain lost concentration and my eyes couldn’t focus. The blood was sticky and wet against my bare chest. The room was dead silent as they witnessed what I just did.

The thunder rumbled its approval.

“KYNDER!” Austin yelled as he snapped out of his trance. The metal plate that was place over my hole in my stomach had been the thing to save my life. Miles had aimed in just the right spot, directly piercing the blue/grey flesh that marked the spot where the iron poker had pierced through.

I guess in the end, if Austin hadn’t burned me with the poker, I would be dead. I wouldn’t have gone to get surgery, I wouldn’t still be alive. It’s kind of funny how things like this worked out.

“Aus…” I whispered to him. His face was blurry. Footsteps rushed out of the bedroom. It must’ve been Quinn because the other boys crowded around me, all murmurs of amazement and worry.

“Watch out, boys.” Quinn shooed them aside and knelt next to me. Her tender hands placed a cold towel over the wound. I shivered under the touch of the water, but it instantly relieved some pain. Everything snapped back alignment. Austin’s face seemed to be a beacon amidst the pain that I was experiencing. A cold breeze whipped through as Austin gathered me into his arms. Some hands slid a sweatshirt over me. I think it was Alex because now he was just wearing a dark blue short sleeved shirt.

“It’s so cold.” I murmured, just a sentence to fill the emptiness. Austin’s forehead touched mine and my eyes fluttered closed under his close touch. Without warning, I felt his gentle lips press against mine in a meek kiss.

“That was warmer.” I muttered with a faint hint of a smile. Austin laughed quietly and scooped me up and started to carry me out of the house. The sweat shirt covered everything except for my stomach where the cloth soaked up the blood from the knife wound. A cell phone rang. It was Alex’s.

He picked up the line and answered, taking a few steps away from our retreating party. His face drew into worry as he snapped his phone closed, whispered to Quinn and then took off back towards the house.

“Everything is good, but they were rounding up the last man when Jack got hurt. They say it isn’t too bad, just a slash to the arm, but Alex took off.” She explained. I could still hear the faint call of Alex as he screamed for his best friend.

“Austin, I’m tired.” I complained to him. He held me closer to his chest as I curled into the warmth that was provided. He kissed my forehead and picked up the pace.

“We’re going to a hospital soon. You can sleep after we get there.” He told me with a laugh. Ghost came up to me, gently stroking a piece of hair back into place.

“I would’ve jumped in front of that knife for you.” He murmured to me. I shook my head.

“I would’ve punched you and called you a fool.”

“I know, but it’s the thought that counts.” He laughed. I couldn’t help but smile. He went off at a light jog to catch up with the rest of his band. Quinn fell behind, staring through the tree until it was Alan, Aus, and I. Before I realized it, I let out a little yawn.

“You’re adorable.” Alan chuckled. I opened one eye in confusion.

“Did you not just see me bash the brains out of some man and then chuck him out the window?”

“Yeah, but that was a monster, not a man.” Alan corrected. I took that into consideration and then nodded.

“Austin, I’m going to sleep.” I told him. He sighed.

“Kynder, can you please stay awake for me until we get to the hospital? Darling, I know you can do it.” He asked. I shook my head, feeling the black spots already growing.

“No, Austin please let me sleep. I’m way too tired. It’s dark everywhere.” I tried to open my eyes but felt like they were glued down. I thought about what tortures I had been through in just the last three days, leaving my body worn down and weary. Despite this, nothing can stop me from getting what I wanted: My freedom back.

“Come on, let’s move faster. We’ll take one of the trucks.” Alan murmured. I felt Austin’s pace pick up. Before I knew it, I was freefalling into wonderful dreams and terrifying nightmares.
