Shattered

This World is not My Home, I'm Just Passing Through

Five people I knew best were standing before me. I felt another hot flash of pain as Miles jerked the blade edge closer to my neck. I felt bare and exposed with the cold wind nipping on my chest. Thunder overhead shook the house in rage.

“I would put your weapons down, if I were you.” Miles darkly commanded. No one dropped their knives, gun, or golf club. In fact, where did Alan get the golf club? Never mind, my life was on the line here!

Miles jerked the knife, spilling more blood as Austin’s eyes glared down to the man. The chain he held jerked my up to my feet in a standing position. Alex leveled his gun to Miles.

“Shoot and I bleed herself dry.” The cruel man commanded. I longed to reach up and tug at his hands, force him away, but it would only increase the peril of the situation.

“Just let her go.” Austin growled. Miles laughed bleakly. A crazed look covered his eyes. I glanced to Alan. He seemed to be reading the situation. His eyes flickered between the bloody, torn shirt on the bed and the knife at my throat.

“Why should I? Did you really think I’m going to let my little prize walk away so easily?” He spat. He twisted the collar and I choked, losing my breath. Ghost stood in the back with dark eyes panicking.

“Did you know that when I slit her jugulars that she has about two minutes before she bleeds out? No matter how lucky or quick she is, she won’t survive that.” Miles said. Tears started to rush out of my eyes from the pain he was putting me through. I couldn’t stop the flood as they mingled with the blood.

“Just let her go and we’ll all leave.” Ghost begged Miles. Despite their efforts, I knew that he wouldn’t give up so easily.

“There are other options as well. Many veins could be cut and she bleeds out as well. A quick knife to the heart. Puncture the stomach and it causes a longer, more painful death.” His wicked grin seemed to melt any courage in Austin’s face.

“How about an exchange?” Ghost suggested. I gasped between strangled words. My brain was quickly shutting off as the air failed to reach my lungs. Ghost stepped forward. I could hear Alan asking what he was doing.

“What do you propose?” Miles inquired. His curiosity was peaked at the situation. Thunder rumbled high overhead.

“I’ll take her spot if you let the rest of them go.” Ghost held up his hands in surrender, dropping the small knife he held. I sobbed harder. I couldn’t lose him too!

“Ghost…no!” I pleaded. Ghost gave me a small, farewell smile. He was willing to give up his life just for me. Austin reached to pull him back but Ghost stepped forward. Miles jerked on the chain as more blood slid down my throat.

“That certainly is an interest proposition….but I’m afraid that time is running out for Kynder.” Miles barked out a hoarse, demonic laugh. It was if he was possessed! Quinn looked at him curiously.

“What do you mean?” She spat in her rough voice. The tips of my fingers were numb. I knew what he was going to do.

I was finally going to die.

“I grow weary of these false propositions. You waste my time.” Miles sighed in an air of tiredness. I jerked away from him, but instead of placing the knife to my throat again, he wrapped his left arm around my neck so that I was being choked in the small space around his elbow. His right arm dangled to the side. Reaching up, I clawed with feeble hands at his arm.

“Just let her go!” Alex screamed at him. Miles shook a finger at him, just like Alex was a naughty child that was going to be punished. Instead, I was going to receive the torture.

The last breath was starting to fade and I felt weaker than before. The thunder overhead was constant and shook the foundation of the house. I was about to see Mitch, Wrecks, and my parents again.

It was my final goodbye to my friends here on earth. I opened my eyes to the fuzzy scene of Alex trying to hold his gun stead. Miles swung me around so that if the armed weapon went off, I would be hit instead.

“Any last words, Kynder?” Miles growled happily. My five friends were about to witness the last moments of Kynder Syre, the alley runner who lost her parents but found a family beyond the sadness.

I stayed silent, but locked my eyes on with Austin. Tears streamed down everyone’s cheeks, but Austin was a pool of sadness, knowing he could do nothing to stop Miles. No one could stop the cruel master.

I closed my eyes just as Miles’s right arm swung the blade up, and then slammed down into my stomach, embedding deep into my flesh.
