Memories that Haunt Us

News

Officer Colts left as soon as Beth came through the door, sleeping in her carrier. I leapt up and took it from the woman who had carried that. Beth yawned and twisted in her little dreams. Her fists were clenched up in a peaceful dream. I felt a tear drip down my cheek.

We almost had everyone together again.

Officer Colts thanked me and gave his small friend a hug. As he left, I noticed the new bracelet he proudly wore. Arabelle had already packed up her craft supplies and looked pleased with herself.

“Beth!” Arabelle softly cried out. Her happiness radiated like pinpoints of sun. I stroked my little months old child. Her little wisps of hair ghosted my skin like faint kisses. Arabelle smiled and went to sit next to me.

The lady at the counter offered us water as we waited. I politely declined, because I saw a familiar car pull up in the parking lot. A load of frantic people leapt out and made a mad dash for the doors. A stampede of wild men (plus a crazed girl) were making a rush for the doors.

Lily-Pearl led the charge, followed closely by Alan, Phil, Tino, Aaron, Sara, and Oli. They all slowed down as they hit the sliding door. Trying to compose themselves, they walked towards me. My sister burst out and swooped me up in a hug. I gave her a hug back and turned to everyone. I managed to give everyone a hug and distribute the thanks for coming.

“How’s Aussie?” Aaron asked. Everyone took a seat in the lobby. The office lady looked annoyed that it was starting to be dinner time and she had to deal with this noisy band. Oli held Sara’s hand in his own. Phil held Arabelle on his lap, letting her pass out on his shoulder. She was exhausted from today.

“Apparently, he’s in a coma. I don’t know how bad. He might wake up now, or maybe tomorrow, or maybe next week.” I explained. They all nodded sorrowfully.

“We’re hoping it’s now.” Tino agreed.

“So you found Beth. That’s great.” Aaron smiled as he tickled her hand. She hiccupped in her sleep.

“Yeah, that’s good.” I smiled and agreed. Alan distributed food to me and I held the bag for when my daughter would wake up. LP grasped her husband’s hand tightly in her own.

I wish I could hold Austin’s hand in my own.

A doctor looking tired and worn walked out. She approached our large group. It was no mystery who we were here for.

“Miss Carlile?” She asked. I nodded.

“Me.” I raised my hand as I munched on a fry.

“We have some news for you…”
