Memories that Haunt Us

The Following

Austin’s POV

There were cars following me. There were four now and I knew they had been following me for the past fifteen minutes. I took multiple turns down strange roads. They kept at a safe distance. I didn’t want to leave my car because I didn’t know these people.

The knot in my stomach grew tighter.

I kept trying to call Raelyn. She wouldn’t pick up her phone. I had a tense feeling that something was very, very wrong. She would’ve picked up. I tried calling Alan.

“What’s up, Aus?” Alan asked. I heard waves crash in the background. Cars honked on the other end. I took a right onto a street further downtown.

“Has Rae called you?” I asked him.

“No, why?”

“Oh, she wasn’t picking up. There’s four cars following me…wait….three now. One turned off. Maybe they’re not following me.” I responded hesitantly. A motorcycle peeled off from the rest of the pack truck had turned off.

“You want me to go and check up on her?” Alan asked. I looked to the rearview mirror.

“Okay, just stay in your car, don’t go to your house, and call 911. I’ll be at your place in twenty minutes.” Alan clicked off the line.

For some reason, I had a feeling he wouldn’t find anyone at home.

Arabelle’s POV

The angel and I were driving fast down the highway. I picked out four purple beads (the ones that Uncle Aaron likes) and held them in my palm as if they were precious cargo. The guardian angel had given me a quick lesson on how to use it. We had shot at a tree before backing out of my driveway.

Now we were cruising down the highway. The guardian angel kept looking back and forth, his eyes sweeping the road for the aliens. I felt just like Black Widow, going to defeat evil. I think JC would’ve loved this.

I missed my brother terribly, but I kept seeing him. I would go to sleep and we would sit on the edge of the New York State Building together. I only knew it was that building because we saw it in our favorite movie. We would talk and he said he made a new friend.

I made a friend! We played superheroes together!” He cheered to me one night, or maybe day, it was a dream. It was a dream.

“Who is he?” I asked. JC was so happy. He was only four, but he was learning lots of words and he was always so excited. His little angel wings flapped behind him. He could fly. That was his power. He could fly.

“His name is Mitch! He’s Kenna’s daddy and he loves to play games with me.” JC would smile. Down below, we would watch the Iron Man figure fly through the streets, doing tricks and twirls. I guess I was invading JC’s little paradise. No, I wasn’t invading, I was a guest.

“Do you play with anyone else?” I asked him. I was on the edge of the building. I knew if I fell, JC would catch me. He was always there to catch me.

“Yeah! When Mitch is the Cap and I’m Iron Man, the other angels make cloud aliens for us to destroy! They’re fun!” He cheered to me.

“That’s fun. I miss playing with you back here.” I sighed, kicking my legs. JC swung his arms sadly.

“Yeah, I miss playing with Black Widow.” He giggled. I laughed along.

“When you come back, can we play again?” I asked him. JC nodded. He eagerly told me the adventures he wanted to go on. I laughed more and more as we talked.

“Can you fly?” I asked him. He nodded and showed me how he flew. As the night set in during my dream, I waved goodbye and stepped off the edge of the building…

But that was my dreams. It was reality. My angel had found something and started to head towards it. There was a motorcycle at the edge of a fairly empty lot. A man was sitting on it, holding a phone to his ear.

“That’s the alien, okay?” The angel whispered to me. My heart was racing in my chest at the sight. I nodded as my angel pulled out something that looked like a gun.

“Is that going to kill the alien?” I asked him. The angel smirked a little and shook his head.

“No, no. I don’t like to kill people, even if they might deserve a little shot or two. It’ll knock him out. You got your phone?” I asked him. I pulled out the phone the man gave me and dialed. The tones stopped as a lady turned on.

Nine one one, what is your emergency?” The lady asked. I nodded to my angel and he shot the man on the motorcycle. No one was around us to see. I explained my situation as we drove to the man who was passed out.

“That’s Rift the alien. He’ll be knocked out for a while.” My angel whispered to me. The lady told us cops would be here in a couple minutes. Sure enough, the sirens were blaring in less than two minutes. A car pulled up to us.

“Are you guys okay?” Was his first question. My angel quickly explained the situation. There were more passed words. I was still in the car, even though the tattooed man had gotten out.

Soon enough, we were on the road.

“Where are we going?” I asked him. He looked ahead. More cop cars were appearing. I felt the excitement growing in my heart.

“I gave the nice policemen the description of the cars. I know these aliens. I know these cars they’ll have. I also told them what your dad’s car looks like and its license plate. They’ll get the aliens in no time.” The man laughed. I sighed in relief. Although there wasn’t much action for these aliens, we still had to get Loki.

“Where to now?” I asked him once more, buckling up. He winked to me.

“Off to get your mom.” He smiled.

“Do you know where she is?” I asked curiously. How does this angel know where she is? We never interrogated the other aliens.

“If I know Loki, then I know where he’ll be.” The angel muttered back.
