Memories that Haunt Us
Meetings in the Undergrowth
Hex’s POV
And so the car kept going. It never stopped once. There wasn’t a single stall in the system. This truck had served me well.
And so it would continue to do.
As soon as Ryker pulled his gun on James, it was every man for himself. Despite losing that child, James, I smiled. James had served his purpose. It was good to get rid of…dead weight. Our mission, killing one of the children, had been accomplished. I might have laughed if we had scored another kill, but only the son was dead today.
All I could think of was Ryder, my old friend and leader. These deaths would avenge his. Our ultimate prize was Raelyn. No, she would be last.
She would watch her world burn before her eyes.
And so the truck hummed on. I turned the station up to the classics. Behind me was a couple of guns that rested on the back seats under the darkened windows.
I took turns down desolate roadways and bumpy drives. My phone’s GPS led me towards the meeting point. As soon as I had gotten out of jail, I had sent a message to my old comrades to meet up here. After the note had been sent out via the network of secret prisoners’ and their ways, I went and found James.
The gun I had used, the one that had been faithful through many years, was still warm in the passenger seat. It was like another person was there, not just a piece of metal.
Refocusing my attention back to the meeting area, I stopped my car. It was hidden in a clump of trees. I took a pistol just in case and closed the door of my vehicle. A bird fell silent at the sound.
Feet carrying me through the undergrowth, I was led past a stream and towards an open area. This was far out of my way, but all worth it when the others showed up.
As I entered the open area, I saw the outlines of my former teammates. They glanced to me and I smiled at their presence. Some looked beat up, others looked neutral.
“Ah, my old friends. Are we ready for a little vengeance?”
