Memories that Haunt Us

The next morning, I woke up the kids. Ryker had stayed over, saying that if he couldn’t stay in the house, he would gladly sleep in his truck. Knowing that he was giving us shelter for the next few day, I agreed to let him sleep in the guest bedroom.

So just before lunch, the kids came down with a small suitcase with clothes and necessities. I had already called Sara and Oli, saying that we wouldn’t need them at the house for the next few days. We were going on a “vacation” with an old friend.

All I could hope was that LP relayed the information to Austin for me.

Ryker peered around the corner. JC and Arabelle hadn’t seen our guest at all yet. I wondered how they would take to him.

“Momma, where are we going?” JC asked me. I held baby Beth in my arms, rocking her back and forth. JC and Arabelle came down the stairs, running up to me.

Arabelle froze as she saw Ryker.

“We’re going on vacation.” I told them. Ryker handed me the child seat and walked outside as he saw Arabelle. What had happened between the two? JC nodded, accepting the situation. As soon as the door closed behind Ryker, I turned to Arabelle.

“What is it, sweetheart?” I asked her softly. Taking her hand, we moved towards the door.

“That’s the Guardian Angel!” She whispered excitedly. What did she say?

“Who?”

“The Angel I see every time we go to the park! He pulled JC out of the way of the car!” She pulled on my sleeve excitedly. As I opened the door, we started to walk down the front porch steps to the black truck.

I had no words for what I had heard her say.

“Here we go.” Ryker opened the door and helped me buckle up Arabelle and JC. My oldest daughter said nothing to the man, but just stared at his tattooed arms. I put Beth in the child seat and buckled her in before hoping into the passenger’s side.

We would hopefully be driving away from danger.
