Memories that Haunt Us

Life is Beauty

"Breathe, sweetheart. Just breathe." Austin soothed me. The pain, it was nearly unbearable but I had done this twice before. I could do it again. Austin held my hand as I pushed. The doctors wheeled around me in the sterile room. The tan walls did nothing to soothe the anxiety I felt, or the pain. Machines beeped excitedly.

Twenty minutes later, it was just Austin and I in the room. The IV's, the medications, the doctors-they all tried to help the pain but I could still feel the bite linger. Doctors had told him to stay out, but he refused and sat next to my side through the entire process. His cool palm caressed my cheek sweetly. I turned my sleepy head to look at him.

"They better bring me my baby or I'm going to flip out." I mumbled. The sleep must've kicked my brain into overdrive and worn it out, because that was something I wouldn't normally say. Austin laughed quietly as he rubbed the back of my hand with his thumb.

"Don't worry, Rae. They're probably just trying to pick out the perfect blanket." He responded. I grumbled something unintelligible about how any blanket would do, I just wanted to see my child! The door swung open on silent hinges as I held my breath. Three nurses crowded in. I held out my arms to take her. I don't care that my arms feel like lead and I was in pain.

"Here's your beautiful baby girl!" The nurse cooed. Three older women that had helped in the delivery looked from the distance at the gorgeous girl I held in my arms. She opened her mouth, as if to cry but no sound came out. The nurses in green scrubs held their distance and gave Austin and I room.

"She's stunning." Austin gasped. She already had many tufts of frosted blonde hair. Two light blue eyes blinked up at me happily. I reached one finger up to gently stroke the side of her face. The baby gurgled happily and reached up with tiny arms. Two familiar doctors came up and took a seat next to Austin. The men shook hands as I stared into the lovely eyes of my newest child.

"What's her name?" Dr. Vic Fuentes asked. I took no hesitation to respond. Aus and I had discussed this over the months.

"Beth Alexandra Carlile." I breathed out. The baby responded with a chirpy giggle at her name. It was in honor of my mom. Aus insisted that it would be her name. Austin couldn't stop grinning. The muscles in his face would be sore in the morning! Sunlight poked through from the morning rays.

"That's a wonderful name." Dr. Mike Fuentes beamed. As they congratulated me and left the room, I held the child close to my chest. The nurses filed out of the room, letting us have a little more time together.

"I think the rest of the family wants to meet the new arrival." My husband gently told me. Oh, I had nearly forgotten about them! My brain had been to wrapped up with the child in the soft pink blanket. Getting up, Austin closed the blinds a slight bit before opening the door.

The first group to arrive was my other two children, plus LP and Alan. Jonathan-Christopher, my two year old boy, held on to Alan's hand tightly as he toddled into the room behind my oldest daughter, Arabelle.

"JC, you want to see your new little sister?" I whispered. My voice was still a little hoarse and rough. Strength hadn't returned to my body, either. JC came up to the side of the bed. Austin hoisted him on his lap to look at his little sister.

"Little sis." He clapped softly. From the corner of my eye, I saw my own little sister hold onto Alan's arm, smiling at me.

"What's her name?" Arabelle asked me softly. Although she was soft spoken and had blue eyes like mine that would observe everything, she had the most energy out of all of us and always had to be doing something. Right now Arabelle was attempting to stand still and look at the newest sibling.

"Her name is Beth." I told her. Her little hand gently stroked Beth's soft hair.

"Bet! Bet!" JC babbled with light brown eyes focused raptly on Beth. Austin ruffled his brown hair and hugged him tightly. It looks like Beth already had a nickname.

Jonathan-Christopher took after his father. From his brown hair and eyes to his enthusiasm and spark, JC was a little daddy's child. Arabelle was like my own reflection. Frosted blonde hair and icy blue eyes that reflected the world around her. I wondered who Beth would turn out like.

LP and Alan stepped forward to see their niece. I handed my little kid off to LP who gently took her up in her arms. Austin was playing with JC and watching as Alan played with Beth's fingers. The ginger entertained the child like he entertained the crowds of fans that always swarmed to see the band.

"She's beautiful." Alan murmured. I smiled weakly. Sleep was starting to turn the room to a fuzzy tan shade and the rest of the band was beginning to file in. Twenty minutes later as Beth was carefully passed to Tino, Aaron, and Phil, they handed her eventually back to me. That's when the nurses entered the room. Weaving among the quiet crowd, they picked up the baby to take another health inspection.

I watched as my daughter was taken out of the room. Austin squeezed my hand firmly. Behind him, sunlight squeezed through cracks in the shades to see what the commotion was about.

"Do you want to sleep, Rae?" He asked me. I nodded. Everyone took a seat around me as I started to drift off.

What a beautiful life I had.
