Doll Face

I was in my high school gym, looking up at the hundreds of students sitting in the bleachers. I held my acoustic guitar in my hands and felt myself trembling. The administration thought a talent show would be a nice treat for all of us, and since I was failing music class, I had to participate or else I had to go to summer school. Somehow the music teacher found my Youtube page and listened to the covers I did. I was singing Pierce The Veil’s “Hold On Till May” It was one of my favorite songs and I’ve done it so many times that it comes naturally.

“Ok here’s the last performance of the day. Elena Faye will be singing Pierce the Veil’s “Hold On Till May”” the principal announced.

I walked up to the mic and started playing. “She sits up high, surrounded by the sun…” I sang. I closed my eyes and became lost in the music.

“This love was out of control, 3-2-1 where did it go?” I started to sing the next line when I was cut off by a familiar voice.

“If I were you I’d put that away.” I turned around to see Vic Fuentes and the rest of Pierce The Veil entering the gym from the backdoor. I heard a few girls scream. I stopped playing and luckily I had the guitar on a strap. I put my hands over my mouth and felt myself start to cry. Vic walked towards me with a microphone in his hands.

“See you’re just wasted and thinking about the past again. Darling you’ll be okay.” he sang and wiped my tears away. “And she said…” Vic sang and looked at me to finish it. Somehow I found my voice and started to play my guitar.

“If you were me you’d do the same…” I never took my eyes off Vic as I sang. “And as the sun went down.”

“We ended up on the ground.” joined in Vic.

I didn’t miss a beat. “I heard the train shake the windows.”

“You screamed over the sound.” Vic stood beside me and I turned so we were facing each other.

“And as we own this night.” I sang.

He looked me dead in the eyes. “I put your body to the test with mine.” We sang the last line together. Our voices harmonized perfectly. After the song I immediately threw my arms around Vic. Tony, Mike, and Jaime joined in the hug. I was crying and gasping out “thank you”. We left the gym and walked out in the hall where we met my music teacher.

“Auntie Sonia” Tony exclaimed and gave her a hug.

“Auntie?” I questioned and looked at Mrs. Garcia.

“Perry was my maiden name.” she told me. “I saw your covers of my nephew’s band and was really impressed so I called them to come and watch you.”

“Oh my goodness! Mrs. Garcia I don’t know how to thank you.” I said.

“Well you can start showing up to my class.” she told me and we all laughed.

“There’s actually something we wanted to ask you.” said Jaime.

“What?” I asked.

“Would you like to come on our summer tour with us? We’d love to have you as one of the opening acts and you can sing on Hold On Till May with Vic.” Mike said.

“Of course!” I shouted. There was only two months left in school and I’ve always dreamed of this moment.
