Who Can Save Me Now?

Chapter 1

“Victoria!” I heard my mother yell. I ignored her, passing my dad and my sister in the living room. “VICTORIA!” She yelled and I stopped; my black and white converse on the first step of the staircase. “What did you do?” She asked. The venom in her voice dripping with every word, her eyes would be on fire by now. Smoke would be steaming out of her ears if this was a cartoon, but this was real life. It was my shitty life. And I hated it. She repeated her question, having me finally turn around.

“I dyed my hair, isn’t it obvious?” I snapped. My mother glared at me with her brown eyes.

“I can see that Victoria, but why?” She responded.

“I like the color.” I lightly grabbed a random strand of my hair. The boring brown gone, replaced by a teal color.

“You will go back and dye your hair back to normal.” She took a step to me and I starred at her.

“No.” I responded. Before my mother could say anything else, I turned around and headed up the stairs, going straight to my room.

“Victoria!” I slammed my door closed and sat on my bed. I reached for the radio remote on my bedside table as my mother barged in.

“Haven’t you heard of knocking?” I asked, turning my radio on and listening to the guitars and drumming of Asking Alexandria.

“Get that color off your hair, Victoria.” My mother spat. I ignored her, doing the usual and singing along with Danny. “Victoria!” I felt my hair getting pulled and I let out a yelp before feeling a sting on my cheek. I fell to the floor on my hands and knees, knowing she had slapped me.

“My daughter will not disrespect me like this!” She yelled before pulling my hair back, having me stand up as she slapped me again. After a few slaps, a bloody lip, and a scratch on my cheek, I heard my mother leave my room. The song ended, another started and I stayed on the floor.

I didn’t even cry anymore. I mean, she never hit before like this, but I didn’t want to cry. I slowly got up, hearing Ben’s soft voice and walked to my closet. I grabbed a random shirt and cleaned myself up, hearing a thud behind me and seeing my neighbor, Grant, staring at me.

He stood at 6 foot 7; his grey eyes looked shocked as he examined me. He wore his usual band tank that showed off his sleeves of colorful tattoos. His ears were stretched to a size zero. His dark green hair was wild like always and he looked out of breath. He slowly walked to me, silently asking me for permission. I finally ran to him and wrapped my arms around his waist, tears running down my face.

Crying was a sign of weakness, I never cried in front of anyone, only Grant. He was my best friend.

“Come on, pack your bags.” He whispered and we rushed around my room, placing all my things into my duffle bags. I grabbed all my colorful bracelets and shoved them in the bag as Gant took my CD’s. After three bags were filled, he jumped out the window and ran to his yard with two bags, leaving me with the other. Most of my jeans and shirts were in it before I went back to my closet. I picked up a photo of my dad and my little sister, Samantha.
She was always my mom’s favorite. But I don’t hate her for it. I guess I deserved for being a horrible daughter. I saw Grant coming back and I tossed him the last bag. I pocketed the photo and gave him the signal to wait. I took one more look around my now empty room. I nodded at everything and walked out of my room.

“Give her some space honey.” I heard my dad.

“Give her space? She’s never going to be anything! I can’t deal with her anymore.” I heard my mother. I held in my tears as my sister past me.

“Toria?” She asked. I looked down at her, her brown eyes looking at me.

“Take care.” She whispered. “I saw Grant with your things. Don’t worry, I won’t say anything.” She smiled. I hugged her tightly, having her return it before I pulled away.

“I love you, remember that. I’ll call you as soon as I can.” I smiled at her and gave her my phone. “Leave it on my bed, off.” She nodded and walked off. I watched as she walked in my room and I turned back to the conversation downstairs. I took a deep breath and began walking down, feeling my mother glare at me.

“I’ll be back.” I spoke, looking at my dad. He watched me as my mother scoffed.

“Are you getting that color out?” She asked.

“Yes.” I answered. I walked to my dad and hugged him tightly. He softly petted my hair and kissed my head.

“Hurry back, we’re having pasta.” I smiled at him and turned around, heading out. I closed the door behind me, heading to Grant’s place and going to his driveway. He was in the driver’s seat as I got in the passenger side and we drove off.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“Alyssa’s place; you’re mom doesn’t know her.” I stayed quiet, nodding my head. I watched from the side mirror as my house became smaller and smaller; knowing that all my worries were going to be gone.
