The Hunger Games - Band Version

Chapter One

I woke up to the sound of screaming and crying from my little sister's side of the bed. It was her first reaping day, and I knew she was terrified.
I automatically sat up and took her into my arms.
"Shhh, shh, it's okay, it was a dream." I whispered soothingly.
"It was me. They picked me." My sister, Katherine said through her tears.
"It's okay. Your name is only in there once, it won't be you." She gave me a look, and I know exactly what she wanted.
I started singing a song that was extremely old. My mom used to sing it to us before my dad died. "If I were you, I'd put that away.. See you're just wasted and thinking 'bout the past again.." Katherine joined in at the last line. "Darling you'll be okay."
I stroked her hair and smiled at her. "Try to go back to sleep. I've gotta go."
"Where?" She asked.
"I've just gotta go." I kissed her on the forehead and got up and got ready.
As I made my way to the forest where I hunt, I noticed how much poverty my district was in. We haven't won a Games in years, and we don't harvest or hunt food for the Capitol, so that means we don't have that much food at all.
I got to the District border and I climbed over the 'electric' fence. The fence was never on, because we couldn't afford the electricity to power it.
I made my way into the forest and got my bow and arrows out of a log that I always hid them in. After a few minutes of looking around, my eyes set on a deer. The first one I've seen in a very long time.
I followed it around for about half an hour, and kept missing because of it's constant movement. Once I was at an angle where I was sure I was gonna shoot it, I voice sounded and startled the deer away.
"What are you gonna do with that when you kill it?" I heard a familiar voice say.
"Fuck you, Vic." I turned around and said to an old friend of mine. I've known him since I've started school, and he seems to be the only person besides Katherine I can really trust.
"You act like you'll be able to sneak that past all the peacekeepers from the Capitol." He said with a smirk. He had a point.
"Whatever." I said.
"Exactly. But come on, the reaping is in an hour." We made our way back to the district and he walked me to my house. We gave our final hug, since we didn't know if either of us would be safe this year. Both of us had our name in the drawing over seventy times, since we kept getting food from the Capitol over the years. We were the ones who supported our families.
I got ready with Katherine, without much of mom's help. She mainly just laid our clothes out and watched us get ready ourselves.
Soon after we were done getting ready, the whistle calling everyone to the square sounded. Katherine immediately stiffened up.
"Alright, it's time to go now. But you'll be okay, I promise. I won't let anything happen to you." I hugged her tight. The whistle sounded again. I gave her a reassuring look, then held her hand as we headed towards the square.
We did the check in process, then I gave her one last hug as I sent her to go stand with the other twelve year olds. I went to stand with my age group, and I could see Vic from where I was standing. We always made sure we could see each other, just so we could reassure each other.
After a few minutes of silence, Effie Trinket came out of our Justice Hall.
"Welcome, welcome welcome!" She said with the cheesiest smile on her made-up face. "Happy Hunger Games, and.. May the odds, be ever in your favor." She showed us a video on how the Hunger Games started, which me and Vic made fun of every year.
"Now, let's not waste time." She said as the video ended. "As usual, ladies first." She made her way over to the large glass bowl that held all the girls in the eligible age groups names. She shuffled the cards around a little bit, then held one up. She made her way back to the microphone and slowly unfolded the small sheet if paper.
"Katherine Carter." She said loudly and clearly.
No. No no no no no.
I saw Katherine tense up and slowly walk to the isle way. I ran out and got stopped by some peacekeepers.
"KATHERINE, NO!" More peacekeepers came to try and stop me.
"WAIT, I VOLUNTEER, I VOLUNTEER!" They suddenly stopped and looked at me in shock. "I volunteer as tribute." I said clearly. Katherine ran into my arms, and I hugged her tight.
"Katherine, I'm so sorry, go find mom."
"No!" She said, bawling.
"Katherine, go find mom, I'm so sorry, i love you!" Vic came and got her, and I held on to her for as long as I could. I was dragged to the stage by the peacekeepers.
I stood by Effie as she went to draw a boy. She did the same as she did with the girls, and shuffled a bit before picking a card. She made her way back to the microphone.
"Jaime Precadio." She read from the card. I saw a few people crowd away from a strangely familiar looking boy. The peacekeepers got him up on stage, and we shook hands. Then I realized where I knew him. He had thrown bread at me. It was soon after my father died. Me and my family were starving to death, and I was sitting there by the bakery. He had dropped some bread in the oven and burned it, and his mom was screaming at him while he was throwing it to the pigs, and when she left, he had thrown some to me.
The peacekeepers led us into the Justice Hall, and then it hit me.
Im actually going to the Games.
i took a look at my family in the distance, and I felt the tears coming instantly.

Notes

So yeah first chapter! I know it's not exactly the same as the real Hunger Games, but I want it to be different in some ways. I really hope you like it!
