We Want Love

CHAPTER NINE

A few days later

*Amelia*

It is Saturday - the day of my cinema 'date' with Matt. Although he hasn't really called it a date himself, it was clear to me that that was what he wanted it to be when he asked me a few days ago.

I hear a knock on my bedroom door. "Come in." I say loudly, alerting the person outside that they could come inside.

Raye opens the door and walks inside, sitting herself down on my bed and smiling at me. "So is this a date then?" She asks me straight away and I look at her, mild amusement clear on my face.

"I don't really know." I say honestly and she looks at me deeply.

"Do you want it to be a date?" She asks.

"I don't really know." I say again and she laughs.

"I guess you will find out after the 'date' is over." She says and makes faux quote marks with her hands when she says the word 'date'.

"I suppose so."

"So what are you wearing?" She asks me and I look at her, confused.

"Uh... this?" I tell her and drop my arms by my side, letting her see my simple outfit of jeans, a baggy raglan and a cardigan.

"Didn't you wear that shirt to college yesterday?" She asks me and I nod guiltily.

"It isn't dirty! It's comfortable, leave me alone." I whine and fold my arms across my chest.

"Come on, Amelia, your clothes are amazing. What if this does turn out to be a first date, then you will regret dressing like you are going to see a football game or something."

I open my mouth at her in shock and frown. "This is not a bad outfit! I opted for casual!" I yell defensively.

"You look nice. But not date nice. Not cinema nice. Not-"

"Yeah, I get it." I roll my eyes.

"Why do you always wear such baggy clothes anyways, you must have more clothes that aren't baggy and that flatter your figure more than loose fitted pullovers and baggy raglans and t-shirts."

"I like baggy clothes. Wow, you are being such a bully. If you are that concerned then why don't you choose my outfit."

"I will! Happily!"

I end up leaving the house with Matt, wearing a pair of cute white loose shorts with a lace trim and a cropped fuzzy baby blue sweater and a pair of white vans and my hair tied into a ponytail with a polka dot scrunchie to make the outfit seem more casual - just in case this turned out to not be a date. My mood is slightly dampened as I am exposing way more of my body than I would like to.

"You look gorgeous." Matt tells me, a smile spreading across his face from ear to ear.

"Thank you. You don't look too bad yourself." I tell him and he grins.

We both get into his car and make our way to the cinema about 20 minutes away.

When we reach it, he gets out of the car quickly and jogs to my side, opening the door for me. "Thanks." I say and blush slightly, climbing out of the car and accepting the subtle offer of holding Matt's hand.

This is definitely a date, I decide, and butterflies swarm in my stomach.

"What would you like to see?" He asks me and I look up at the long list of movies on the screen above the ticket desk.

"Let's see The Fault In Our Stars!" I almost yelp and he laughs.

"Is it soppy?" He asks.

"It is adorable, we have to watch it."

"Okay. Two tickets to see The Fault In Our Stars please." He asks the lady behind the desk and pulls out his wallet from his pocket.

"Hey, I can pay for my ticket." I say when I see him pull enough money out for the both of us.

"Don't be stupid. Thank you." He thanks the woman behind the desk when he receives his tickets and change. "Come on, let's get some snacks." He says excitedly and I laugh at his childish behavior.

"Can we get popcorn?" I ask him and he nods, walking over to the desk and asking for a large bucket of popcorn and to large cups of coke.

He pays for everything again, his generosity making me smile uncontrollably. "Okay, do you need to go to the bathroom now so that you aren't going halfway through the movie?"

I shake my head no and he nods. I realize that we are still holding hands and a rush of happiness shoots through me followed by a rush of guilt when for some reason I think of Vic. I shake my head to myself and try to forget about my thoughts and just concentrate on having a good time now with Matt.

We walk into screen room 2 together and get the seats in the middle - the best in my opinion. "Are you ready to cry your eyes out?" I ask him and he looks at me.

"I thought you said this wasn't a soppy movie!" He says.

"I sort of lied. It isn't really soppy, it is just really sad. At least, the book was anyway." I giggle and he nudges me in the arm, shaking his head jokingly.

"If I cry you cannot tell a soul. Or I will kill you." He says in a faux stern voice and I laugh, silencing myself as the movie begins.

We walk out of the cinema, Matt still holding my hand and using his free hand to wipe the constant stream of tears from his eyes. I look at him and laugh, the tears in my eyes only just starting to dry up and disappear.

"Do not tell anyone I cried." He chokes and I laugh even harder.

"I won't. I might. Of course I will tell people." I say and he shakes his head.

"I am actually not ashamed - that was heartbreaking and if a man does not cry at that movie then he is not really a man."

"I agree." I say and he laughs.

Our laughter dies down as we get outside and I shiver, the night now cold and giving me goose pimples on my legs and stomach.

"Are you cold? Here, wear my hoodie." Matt says quickly and swiftly removes his zip down hoodie, holding it out for me as I slip my arms in and zip it up. "I'm not sure if that will help, seeing as your legs are probably freezing too." He mutters and I smile.

"Don't worry, it is helping."

"Good." He nods and looks at me, his eyes boring into mine.

I fight the urge to look away, not wanting to ruin the moment and he leans in closer to me, his eyes flickering to my lips and then back up to my eyes. He places his hand on the small of my back and pulls me in slightly, taking the opportunity to kiss me gently, his lips soft and inviting.

I kiss him back, closing my eyes and resting my arms on his shoulders, losing myself in the kiss.

I hear whistles and cheers from around me and I pull away, embarrassed and slightly ashamed. Matt laughs and I take my arms from his shoulders and dropping them by my sides. I look down at the ground and then back up at Matt again.

"Ready to go?" He asks me and I nod and we head back to his car, my hand in his.

"Hey, I was thinking about what you said about having to stay here for an extra week in the term and I spoke to my mom on the phone, and as long as it's alright with your parents then you can stay at my house for the week. No one is going to be at the student home because everyone goes back to their families, and it wouldn't be fair to leave you on your own there. What do you think?"

"Really? That sounds amazing. I'm sure if my parents spoke to yours over the phone or something then they will definitely let me. Thank you so much, it means a lot." I smile heartily and he nods, smiling back widely.

I take a deep breath and exhale loudly, feeling 100% happy for the first time in forever.

*Vic*

I hear the front door being opened from the kitchen and laughing echoes through the hallway and into this room.

"Sounds like Lia and Matt are home." Raye says.

They both walk in, holding hands and Amelia wearing Matt's hoodie.

"Did you two have a good time then?" Raye asks them.

"Yeah, it was fun." Matt says.

"Don't lie, we watched The Fault In Our Stars and he bawled his eyes out." Amelia laughs and I try not to make eye contact with her.

"I didn't 'bawl' my eyes out, I sobbed a little."

"You basically flooded the cinema with your tears." Amelia laughs even harder and then Matt joins in.

"Anyway, what have you guys been up to?" Matt asks, the question directed at me and Raye but I can feel his eyes focused on me.

I look up at him from my laptop. "Been doing some media coursework. Boring stuff. I'm glad you guys had fun though." I say and catch a glimpse of Amelia's expression as she looks at me. The smile on her face has faltered and her hand has left Matt's, both of them placed firmly in his hoodie pockets instead.

"We did have fun." Matt says and I nod, averting my gaze back to my laptop.

My heart sinks slightly as Amelia agrees, as I know that this is the happiest I have ever seen her and that the reason for her happiness is not me.
