We Want Love

CHAPTER ONE

*Amelia*

"I don't care. I am 17 years old - almost an adult. I am going and I don't care what you say anymore. I have everything planned!" I shout at my dad, anger and determination flowing through me both at the same time.

"And where are you going to stay, exactly? I bet you haven't thought that through, have you? Because we don't have any relatives that live all the way in San Diego." My mother tests me and I smirk at her.

"Actually, yes, I have thought it through. I looked online at student homes that are available in San Diego that are relatively cheap and are close to the college campus. I found an 8 bedroom house that was built specially for students who wanted to stay close to the college. There is one room left that is available for $60 a month, depending on whether you have a job and how much money you get each month. I have spoken to the landlord and, luckily for me, his son actually lives in the home and is a student at the college himself. So payment and placement is easy as he is a co-owner." I look at my parents faces and smile smugly. "And yes, I have spoken to him. He says that it is perfectly okay for me to stay there until my college time is over and as long as I don't cause any trouble and as long as I pay the price that we will decide on when I get there. He even gave me his number in case he needs to meet me somewhere so I can find my way."

My father stares at me, and I can't tell whether his expression shows annoyance or an impressed look. "Okay."

My eyes widen and I look over at my mother, a smile creeping across my face.

"What?!" My mother shouts.

"Calm down, Mel. Think about it. She has already applied to the college and gotten a placement, she has got somewhere seemingly reliable to stay whilst she is there, and she has saved up more than enough money and booked flights and taxis. If we were to stop her, how would that make us look?" My dad says and looks at my mum sternly.

"I-I don't understand... After everything we talked about... The dangers, the possible outcomes." She stutters.

"She isn't a child anymore, Mel. Have you even listened to anything she just said to us? We couldn't have planned this better ourselves. And this is her dream. We can't stop her from living it out."

"Her dream? She wants to fly to the other side of the globe to fulfill her dream of going to an arts school in San Diego when there is one right here in London that she could go to. It just doesn't make sense to me..."

"Well, it makes sense to me. That college has everything she wants, and probably more." His voice drops into a whisper so that I can barely hear what he is saying. "You know how hard it was for her to make friends at the first college that she applied to here in London. Maybe this is her chance. And if it doesn't work out, it isn't hard for her to drop out and fly back over here so we can find a suitable college for her. I just can't help thinking that maybe this is the one place where she is going to excel in her talents."

"You think she will make friends easily?" My mum says just as quietly. "Her art is what made her lose friends and gain enemies in the first place, and art is all she is going to be doing at this college. You know her style is... different."

"But it is a arts college. I bet they are used to stranger things than what she does. And surely they accept every kind of artist. All we can do is give it a try, Mel."

A silence takes over the room and I can feel my heartbeat quickening. I know they were talking about my art, about how it affected my social life in school and the last college that I went to.

But I have a feeling that it is going to be different this time. A lot different.

"Look, Lia..." My mum starts and I look at her. "I am going to let you go. And it isn't because I think it is the right thing to do, it is because you need all of the chances that you can get, okay?"

"Okay. Thank you!" I say and throw my arms around her. She hugs me back and then pulls away, looking at me worriedly. "I promise I will be okay, mum."

She nods curtly. "So... When do you leave?"

My smile falters slightly and I look away peevishly. I gulp. "Tonight."

"Goodbye, we love you." My mother kisses me goodbye on the cheek at the airport.

"We will send you money every month for your rent and a few other things that you will need, okay?" My dad tells me.

"Yes, okay. Thank you."

"You're sure you have the house situation covered?"

"Yes dad. I got an email from them telling me that they are ready whenever I am, and to let them know when I am in San Diego." I reassure him.

"Money?"

"In my purse in my suitcase.""

"Ticket?"

"In my hand, dad!" I laugh and he shakes his head.

"Yeah. Um, of course. Sorry doll, I'm just worried."

"I know, but I am going to be okay, honestly."

My mum looks at me with tears in her eyes. "We will come and visit you at the end of every term, and we will try and arrange a flight for you to come back here for your 6 week holiday, alright?"

"Okay. I have to go now, the plane is leaving in 4 minutes."

"Okay. Call when you reach the house." My dad orders me.

"I will. Bye, I love you both." I say and turn around, picking up my speed and walking towards the boarding door.

I hear my mum call out to me as I walk. "I love you!"

I turn around momentarily and give her a quick wave to show her that I heard.

I reach the doors and hand my flight pass to the attendant at the door and he checks it over. "Good. You'd better hurry, the plane is going to leave any moment now and the stewards like everybody to be in their seats."

"Okay. Thank you." I say and board the plane, looking out for my seat number.

I find it almost immediately, to my luck, and I lift my suitcase and put it in the overhead storage compartment. I manage to fit two of them in there as the seat next to to me is unreserved so I have more space. I place my other bag on the seat next to me and take a seat by the window.

"If you would all like to remain seated, the plane is about to leave. There will be no stops before we reach San Diego and it will take approximately five hours to reach our destination. A warning will be sounded when seatbelts have to be fastened. Thank you for flying with us and enjoy your flight."

Butterflies explode into a frenzy in my stomach as I hear the voice in the speakers announce that the journey is about to begin.

I lean back into my seat and switch on my phone, plugging in my earphones and playing The Smiths.

I was really doing it.

I was really going to San Diego's School of Arts...
