The Monster That Is Me

I pushed the old wooden door open and was meet by a gust of wind. It was an exceptionally cool night in the normally warm San Diego area. I looked around for my friends who said that they would be here soon. My pupils finally adjusted to the darkness and I saw my crew standing at the edge of the forest. I smiled and started walking towards them.

“Hey Eliza!” Elizabeth, Abigail called to me “bout time you got here.”

“Yeah, we were about to leave without you.” Rachel added

“I had to wait for Elina to leave.” I rolled my eyes at her “Well I’m here now fuckers. So let’s go.”

Elizabeth chuckled lightly “I thought you had backed out on us girl.”

“Me…back out?” I stated “Eliza Marie Bathory does not back out. It’s not in my blood to do so.”

“Hey Eliza.” Rachel spoke . I turned my attention to her “You still up to go to the party?”

I laughed “Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?”

“Afraid you’d get caught by the beast.” She laughed

We laughed as we walked down the path into the night. We eventually came up to the graveyard and all of us froze.

“Ohh!” I cheered “Let’s take the cut through here.”

“I don’t know. I mean, aren’t you afraid about the…..” Abigail whispered but I cut her off

“The stupid legend!” I roll my eyes spinning around to face my frighten friend “No! I’m not afraid.”

Rachel stared at me skeptically “But the Book of Shadows stated that they live across cemetery lines.” She looked at the edge of the cemetery which we were now approaching “All the Hypo-Hybrids live there and they are very dangerous.”

“Come on Rachel. Be logical. ” I turned around and looked at her “I’m a hybrid but I don’t live on the edge of the cemetery now do I.” I kicked a rock and it shot forward. I forget sometimes how strong I am “But come on now. A powerful mixed hybrid clan ruled by a vampire-werewolf-witch hybrid.” I laughed hysterically “That’s as fake as a yellow sponge living in a pineapple house in bikini bottom.”

Rachel took a deep breath and glanced at Abigail “Whatever Eliza. We’re supposed to be going to Bill’s house for the party anyways.”

I looked at my best friends shaking my head. I knew that she was desperately trying to change the subject. I could read them like and open book. They were scared of the legend. The legend of the Hypo-Hybrids. It’s just so stupid. They’re being such babies.

“Oh come on, you guys are acting like such wimps. Do you really believe that there is actually a creature out there that’s vampire werewolf mix.” I shook my head “It’s actually quite mad, everyone know vampires and werewolves are natural enemies. And then you add the witch into it. It’s just mad I tell you mad.”

“I’ll show you guys there’s nothing to be afraid of.” I said with a smile on my face

There heads shot up instantly “How?”

“I’ll go past the cemetery line and into cemetery woods.” I turned around and looked out at the dark forest ahead of me “I’ll spend a night there and then tomorrow morning at sunrise I’ll come back home.”

“Are you fucking mad?” Rachel yelled at me “Are you trying to get yourself killed?” Her eyes started to get darker hinting she was angry “Everyone in the Bathorian city limits knows that you’re royal. That you’re related to Elizabeth Bathory and Akasha.” She pointed out at the woods “But once you leave the city limits…..once you cross that cemetery line. All that shit goes down the drain.” She walked up to me “You’ll be just another little dhamphir for them to kill.”

“You’re fucking overreacting.” I scream at her. “I’m just walking across a fucking invisible line. Walking into a forest, camping for one night. ONE FUCKING NIGHT! Were all the supposedly make believe creatures live. And I’ll be back tomorrow.” I looked at her. I’m sure showing my poker face “I’m going whether you like it or not.”

“Fine.” She whispered. I looked at her to see a red tear crawl down her porcelain face “Throw your life away. But I won’t be here to watch you do it.”

She turned around and walked away. I started to feel slightly guilty. I shouldn’t have been so harsh on her. She’s my best friend and I know she only wants what’s best for me. But still, she’s taking this Hypo-Hybrid Legend all out of proportion. God, everyone’s taking this legend out of proportion. I turned around and started walking towards the forest.

I felt a hand wrap around my wrist. I was whipped around to be faced with a frightened Abigail “Eliza, this isn’t safe. Our parents tell us not to go past the cemetery line for a reason. You really shouldn’t go.”

“I’m going okay. Nothing you say is going to change my mind.” I looked into her eyes and saw that they were turning red. She was close to tears “Look I’ll be fine okay. I’m going to be back at sunrise. You’ll see.” I engulfed her into a bone crushing hug “I love you babes. And tell Rachel I love her too.” I ended the hug and smiled softly “See you tomorrow.”

“Sunrise.” She whispered

I shook my head “ sunrise.”

I turned around and kept walking. The deeper I walked the foggier it got. I wasn’t at all afraid though. It was actually quite amusing. How much thicker the fog had gotten in only a couple of steps. It was so thick that I almost couldn’t see. I felt my eyes dilate more than they already were. And that’s when I saw it. The statue of my grandmother Elizabeth Bathory was standing tall on my right and the statue of Akasha, my other grandmother on the left.

“Bathorian cemetery line.” I whispered lowly

I walked past the precious statues and after a short while I arrived at the edge of the Cemetery forest. I took a hesitant step into the opening of the forest. Within a few steps I felt swallowed up by the trees that stood as high as skyscrapers. These are, by far, the tallest trees that I’ve ever seen in my life.

The bright full moon barely shined through the thickets casting down dark, ghost like, shadows. The forest was quiet. Deadly silent the only sound coming from the crunch of the leaves under my sneakers.

“This is spookier than what I thought.” I say second guessing whether or not I should have bet to stay the whole night “But it’s not that bad. At least I seem to be alone. This should…”

“Austin….why are we in the woods?” I heard a feminine voice ask. She sounded scared

“Shut up!” A guy, I’m guessing Austin growled. He sounded angry.

I heard stick break “Austin, you’re starting to scare me.”

“Just shut up” Austin rumbled and I felt like the ground shook slightly “ It’ll be a whole lot easier if you just…..shut up!”

What would be a whole lot easier? Who is this Austin guy? What were they doing in the forest at this time of night.? My thoughts were interrupted by a loud thump. My head shot up as a high pitched scream filled the air.

“Elina was right.” The girl wheezed. She sounded out of breath “You.. are a savage murderer.”

There was a long pause before he replied “Yea, should’ve listened to your friend. Now stop screaming please my dear.”

The screaming stopped instantly. I slowly crept through the woods trying desperately to see something, anything, so that I could know what was going on.

“I swear to god my attentions were gold.” I heard the male say

A clearing appeared and I stepped out to see. There was a man holding a girl and drinking her blood. I slapped my hand over my mouth to prevent myself from screaming. I took a step back and in the process I scrapped my arm.

Shit. I looked down to see my purple hybrid blood oozing out slowly. I glanced up at the man to see that he was looking around, he must have heard me. I immediately crouched down towards the ground. I watched him intensely. He took in a deep, long breath. As soon as he let it out his gaze landed in my direction. A devilish smile appeared on my face.

Fuck, he freaking saw me. I stood up to run but immediately slammed into a hard, compact object. I flew to the ground by the impact. Standing up I dusted myself off. Since when did a tree get behind me? I looked up and gasped it was him.

“What are you doing here?” He growled

I took a timid step back “I….I-I was j-just going f-for a w-walk.”

“In these woods.” He questioned furrowing his thick eyebrows “Haven’t you heard about what happens in these woods?”

“I have.” I shook my head looking around briefly for an opening to escape “I just…never believed in the legends.”

He smirked at me “Until now.”

“Uh-huh.”

“That’s not smart of you.” He chuckled lightly “You know you’re kind are actually very delightful.” His finger wiped up against my new cut before bringing it to his mouth “The creatures in these woods would love to have a bite of you.”

Okay now I’m scared “Okay, well I’ll just be on my way then.”

“Okay….” He was interrupted by a long, spine-chilling howl. His facial features hardened significantly. His pupils went big and his eyes turned a bright auburn color. “You’re coming with me.”

“What?” I screeched as he grabbed hold of my arm. “No, I want to go home.” I struggled in his strong grip “Let me go! Take me home!”

“Shut the fuck up!” Austin’s growl rippled through the forest. Shaking the trees, causing one to even topple over. Tears sprouted from my eyes. I’m going to die “Stop crying.” He says softening his voice slightly. Another howl floated through the air and he immediately went rigid “Stop crying before I give you something to cry about!”

I felt a waterfall erupt from my eyes “Please….”

“You shouldn’t have crossed the cemetery line sweetheart.” He whispered with a long sigh. He leant down and placed a light kiss on my lips “You shouldn’t have crossed the line.”



Then everything went black
